UPDATE: Saltillo Police Chief Steve Brooks said a man who died in Saltillo Monday told his mother he was assaulted before collapsing on his bed, dead.
Brooks said they have not made any charged or officially declared his death a homicide because there were no clear external signs of a cause of death and no witnesses at the scene.
Saltillo police are awaiting autopsy results to determine a cause of death and move forward with the investigation.
Saltillo Police Chief Steve Brooks said his department is investigating a man’s death Monday in the Lee County town.
Brooks said his officers arrived around 4:30 p.m. at 147 Pinewood Street in Saltillo. A man said at the scene he had been assaulted and later died, according to Brooks. The preliminary investigation shows a long standing dispute between two parties may have led to the death, but it is still under investigation.
A person of interest, who is also a male, is in custody, but no charges have been filed, Brooks said. The body of the person who died at the scene has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.
Brooks said once a cause of death is established and Saltillo police have a chance to question the person of interest more information will be released.
