The Shannon Board of Aldermen approved the Sunday sale of beer and light wine Tuesday night.
The vote was 4-1. Shannon and Tupelo are the only two Lee County municipalities to have Sunday beer and light wine sales.
Tupelo began legalized Sunday sales in October.
In Verona, Mayor Bobby Williams said the Board of Aldermen voted down Sunday sales last year.
Saltillo Mayor Bill Williams said he doesn’t think Sunday sales will be approved for his town during the current administration.
One business that will be affected if the Sunday beer and light wine sales are approved will be Quality Discount Foods, a grocery store on Romie Hill Avenue.
Owner Charles Nash told the NEMS Daily Journal earlier that he welcomes the change.
“I think it will be great from an economic standpoint, but not necessarily from a church standpoint,” said Nash. “People are going to say it’s not good because Sunday is a church day, but as a small town we need all the financial help we can get. This will definitely boost the sales tax in Shannon.”
