STARKVILLE — The city of Starkville will miss a Sept. 30 deadline to begin work on a proposed bike path.
City officials have asked the Mississippi Department of Transportation to keep $1.2 million in unspent federal money until the project is ready for construction. The city had never possessed the funds.
City engineer Edward Kemp says the city would have needed to obtain all the necessary rights of way and utility companies would have needed to relocate all their utilities along the proposed route to meet the Sept. 30 deadline.
Kemp says it became obvious the project wouldn’t be ready in time to receive the funding.
The project was proposed to connect Mississippi State University to McKee Park. It was first proposed in 2005.
