UPDATE: Tupelo church loses appeal on Spain House plans

TUPELO – The embattled Spain House is safe, at least for now.

The Planning Committee tonight failed to overturn a decision by the Historic Preservation Commission that prevented Calvary Baptist Church from tearing down the historic house, which the church owns.

The committee voted 4-4 on the church’s appeal from the commission decision. A two-thirds majority was required to overturn the earlier ruling.

The church, which wants the property cleared for other uses, plans another appeal, this time to the City Council.
