UPDATE: Tupelo council narrowly approves budget

TUPELO – The Tupelo City Council, by a 4-3 vote, today approved a $32.7 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Voting against the budget were Markel Whittington, Mike Bryan and Jim Newell.

Among their objections: the inclusion of a salary for Deputy Police Chief Robert Hall, who is not certified; borrowing $1.5 million from the rainy day fund; spending on sidewalks and other projects instead of employee pay raises; and high personnel costs.

Wednesday is the deadline for municipalities to approve their budgets. The new fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
