COLUMBUS — Fire officials are investigating the cause of a blaze that killed a teenager and his grandmother Thursday morning in Lowndes County.
Coroner Greg Merchant said Christopher Hargrove, 13, a New Hope Middle School student, was pronounced dead at the scene. Merchant said the boy died of smoke inhalation.
His grandmother, Mary Hargrove, 63, was transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in critical condition and died shortly before 1 p.m.
WCBI-TV reports the young boy was found in the mobile home’s bathroom and his grandmother in a bedroom. The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen area, blocking the victims’ escape or others from getting to them.
Firefighters got the call about the blaze around 6:10 a.m.
Lowndes Fire Administrator Sammy Fondren said the fire is under investigation.
