UPDATE: Two-vehicle crash kills New Albany teen

By NEMS Daily Journal

MYRTLE – A Union County teen was killed Monday morning when he apparently pulled into the path of an 18-wheeler hauling soybeans.

David Moody Jr., 16, of New Albany, pulled his Dodge pickup onto County Road 51 (Myrtle-Poolville Road) in front of a truck driven by Greg Whittington and owned by Kizer & Sons. Both vehicles left the road, plunged down a steep slope and slammed into trees.

Union County Coroner Mark Golding pronounced Moody dead at the scene around 9:30 a.m.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said while the wreck remains under investigation, he does not expect charges to be filed in the case.

“It was just a terrible accident,” he said.
Whittington was airlifted to The Med in Memphis. A hospital spokesman said Monday afternoon he was listed in good condition.

County Road 51 was blocked for several hours while emergency personnel, Kizer & Sons workers and other people worked together to remove the vehicles from the crash site.

Moody was a student at Myrtle Attendance Center. Union County Schools were closed Monday for the Columbus Day holiday and Fall Break.

Visitation is planned for Moody from 5 to 9 Tuesday at Victory Life Center in New Albany. A memorial service will be held at the same location at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
