UPDATE: State Highway Patrol troopers now say all lanes of Highway 82 eastbound are now open
UPDATE: Currently, the eastbound lanes of US Highway 82 have been partially reopened while crews continue removing debris from the roadway. The highway is still experiencing intermittent closures as crews finish the cleanup of the accident. Officials expect the highway to be fully opened to traffic by 6 p.m. this evening. This closure is the result of an earlier accident where a truck struck a bridge beam.

JACKSON, MISS. Friday, May 04, 2012— The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) would like to inform motorists about a closure on US Highway 82 in Lowndes County.
All eastbound lanes of US Highway 82 at Old West Point Road Bridge have been closed due to an accident involving a truck which hit a bridge beam. It may take up to three hours for emergency crews to remove the beam from the roadway so that it can be reopened to traffic.
MDOT will update motorists as information becomes available.
MDOT regrets any inconveniences this closure may cause. Traffic delays in this area could occur, and alternate routes should be considered.
An accident has closed part of US Highway 82 in Lowndes County near Starkville, according to Mississippi Department of Transportation.
It happened on US 82 at Old West Point Road Bridge in the east bound lanes only. The bridge was hit as part of an accident.
MDOT estimates that part of the bridge will be closed for the next three hours. The incident took place when the bridge was struck by a truck carrying scrap metal and cars. Debris is in the road.
Law enforcement officials are working to clear the scene and no injures have been reported.
