UPDATE: Wicker opposes tribe's Jones Co. casino plans

JACKSON — U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker says he’s opposed to the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians’ plan to build a casino in Jones County.

The Mississippi Republican says he met with tribal chief Miko Beasley Denson to discuss the project and shared his opposition.

Wicker believes the tribe’s plans to move forward ignores public opinion and jeopardizes the Choctaws’ relationships with local, state and congressional leaders. Gov. Haley Barbour also is opposed to the project.

The proposed Bogue Homa casino would be the first casino built outside the tribal headquarters in Neshoba County. The casino would be equipped with 500 to 700 slot machines. It would be a $17 million investment, employing about 250 people.
