UPDATE: Wicker says health care overhaul too costly

JACKSON — U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker told 18 University of Mississippi Medical School students the main reason he’s opposed to President Obama’s proposed health care overhaul is cost.

Wicker said the proposal would “bankrupt” states as they expanded Medicaid programs to cover the uninsured. He also said the federal government would go into more debt trying to extend health care coverage to the nearly 50 million Americans who lack it.

Wicker said he would host townhall meetings on the issue in Mississippi, but he hadn’t set any dates.
