UPDATE:MUW to research Welty University name

COLUMBUS – The name Welty University will be tested by a Jackson marketing firm as a possible new name for Mississippi University for Women, the four-year school announced today.

Welty U was not among three finalists chosen a few months ago by a campus New Name Committee, but statewide research by The Cirlot Agency showed strong interest in it.

The name Welty comes from famed Mississippi author Eudora Welty, who many years ago attended the school for two years when it was known as Mississippi College for Women.

In stating her support for additional research, MUW President Claudia Limbert said, “The information gathered in the original opinion survey is invaluable and will be carefully considered. As we look to the university’s future, we know that doing this right is more important than doing this quickly.

Finalists chosen by the Limbert-appointed New Name Committee were Waverley University, Reneau University and Welty-Reneau. None received a majority of support from research with alumni, the public, students and prospective students.

Limbert called for a new name last fall, saying MUW, which began admitting men in 1982, is not the right name for the Columbus university any more.
