VERONA – A Verona Junior High School teacher and coach has been elected to the town’s five-person governing board.
Marty Pettit won the Ward 3 seat in a special election held Tuesday to find a replacement for Alton Frederick. The 59-year-old Frederick died Nov. 28 in the midst of his second term.
Only 67 of the ward’s 166 registered voters turned out for the special election. Pettit received 36 votes. Jane Jernigan received 16 votes and Herman Martin rounded out the three-person race with a vote total of 15.
Pettit is scheduled to be sworn in Thursday. He will finish out the remainder of Frederick’s term, which ends June 30, 1997, said Town Clerk Julia Roebuck.
