VERONA – A Verona man who was struck and killed while riding his bicycle along a Lee County road died Thursday morning at the North Mississippi Medical Center.
Robert Gates, 41, was hit by a car driven by Robert Guyton of Shannon. The incident occurred about 9 p.m. Wednesday on state Highway 145 in Verona near Lee Memorial Park, said Verona Police Chief Buddy Huckaby.
Gates’ sister, Jennifer Buchanan, said the accident occurred shortly after Gates left her home on his red 10-speed bicycle. The bicycle was Gates’ usual mode of transportation, she said.
Huckaby said Guyton was traveling north when he allegedly veered his car into Gates, who was traveling south on the bicycle. Guyton continued traveling north after the accident, but he did return to the scene later.
Guyton, 60, was charged with DUI-death. If convicted of that charge, he could face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
Guyton was in jail Thursday evening with bond set at $65,000.
