Verona man charged with beating girlfriend’s toddler
VERONA – A 3-year-old Verona boy was in a Memphis hospital Friday after allegedly being beaten by his babysitter.
Zachariah Loving was listed in critical condition in the intensive care unit at LeBonheur Children’s Medical Center.
Mario McGaughy, 22, of Verona has been arrested in connection with the incident and charged with felony child abuse. A bond had not been set for him Friday.
The incident occurred Thursday night at the home of Loving’s mother. McGaughy, who was dating the woman, was babysitting the child while she was at work, said Verona Police Chief Buddy Huckaby.
When the mother returned home about 7 a.m. Friday, she noticed bruises on her son, and the child was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center, Huckaby said. The child was later airlifted to the Memphis hospital.
