VERONA – The Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to reinstate two Verona police officers suspended since a Sept. 3 fatal shooting at City Park.
Officers JB Long and Aaron Andrew have been on suspension despite a Lee County Grand Jury’s decision in January not to indict either officer in the shooting.
The shooting happened in an altercation between officers and two men they were trying to stop. One of the men, Henry Montgomery, 31, of Aberdeen, was killed. The second, Christopher Montgomery, 33, was later charged with possession of 23 grams of crack cocaine during the traffic stop.
Aldermen have deliberated on the status of the two officers in previous closed sessions without making a decision. The decision came Tuesday night after almost an hour in closed session.
The board voted 3-1, with Ward 3 Alderwoman Jessie Gilmore opposing and Ward 4 Alderman Julian Riley abstaining.
