Veterans Tribute Tower to go up in Gautier

GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) — The city of Gautier will host an event Aug. 31 to mark construction on its Veterans Tribute Tower.

The Mississippi Press reports (http://bit.ly/NsScyW) that the 30-foot tall tower will be located at city hall.

The project is funded by a Community Development Block Grant.

The bell tower will feature four clock dials and a 250-pound, 24-inch-diameter bell. The steel tower also would have a sound system.

The base will include bricks with veterans’ names and a memorial wall.

City Manager Samantha Abell said $40,000 has been raised in corporate sponsorships to help pay for the tower’s base and the other work.

“They will be erecting the tower on the 29th (August) and on the 30th there will be the casting of the bell,” she said. “On the 31st there will be the breaking of the mold.”

Abell said the Verdin Co., which is building the tower, has a mobile foundry that will be brought to Gautier along with the tower.

The tower project is expected to be completed by October.
