Virginia-MSU Game 2 suspended; Play to resume today in Charlottesville

Mississippi State is six outs from Omaha, but it’s going to be several hours before it has a chance to get those outs.

Game 2 of this NCAA super regional has been suspended by rain and lightning. The game was halted at 10:02 p.m. local time, and a little over an hour later it was announced that play would resume at 4 p.m. here Monday (3 p.m. Central). MSU is leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, with no outs, nobody on base, and an 0-2 count on Hunter Renfroe.

State needs just six more outs to advance to its ninth College World Series. After winning Game 1 on Saturday, 11-6, the Bulldogs took a 5-1 lead in Game 2. A two-run home run by Wes Rea – his seventh homer of the season – gave MSU a 3-1 lead in the third inning. It became a four-run edge in the fourth when Adam Frazier singled home a run and Derrick Armstrong later scored on a two-out error.

Virginia fought back for two runs in the sixth against reliever Chad Girodo. Nate Irving laced a two-run double off the edge of third baseman Alex Detz‘s glove. But Girodo did strong work tonight, striking out 10 in 4 2/3 innings. Just six days ago, he fanned a career-high 12 in the Starkville Regional clincher versus Central Arkansas.

As on Saturday, an early home run helped Virginia take the lead when Brandon Downes blasted a solo shot to left field in the second inning for a 1-0 edge. It was his team-leading 10th homer.

Heavy rain in the bottom half of the inning caused a 22-minute delay. After it ended, Frazier delivered a bases-loaded single to center with two outs to tie the game, but Downes gunned down Demarcus Henderson at home on the play. Frazier had two hits and two RBIs tonight, and so far this weekend he’s 8 of 10 at the plate.

MSU starter Trevor Fitts lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits. Virginia starter Scott Silverstein gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings, and then UVA went to closer Kyle Crockett. He gave up no runs on one hit in 2 2/3 innings.

Today’s resumed game will be televised on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. That’s if the game is resumed, because the forecast is not promising.
