Walking group forming in Tupelo

TUPELO – A group of walkers are sticking their feet out to create a new walking club in Tupelo.
The Gumtree Walkers, a noncompetitive group for fitness, fun and fellowship, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Helen Foster Auditorium at the Lee County Library.
“We want to establish a walking group here as part of the American Volkssports Association,” said David Neilsen, who is part of the core group of organizers.
The American Volkssport Association – Volkssports originally began in Germany – is a national grassroots networks of about 300 clubs across the country. In 2010-11, chapters held events that were attended by 400,000 people.
“They have 50,000 members,” Neilsen said. The only other Mississippi club is on the Gulf Coast.
The clubs identify trails in the area, and usually hold at least one public event a year. Neilsen sees fertile ground around Tupelo and the surrounding area.
“We have all kinds of places around,” Neilsen said, such as trails along the Natchez Trace Parkway, the Music Bend Nature Trail, civil war battlefields and city parks.
Individuals and families are invited to attend the meeting.
“The whole idea is noncompetitive walking,” Neilsen said. “Anyone can take part.”
