Weather interrupts division tournaments

Guy McDonald’s Houlka boys basketball team hadn’t practiced long Wednesday when the snow started coming down.
“We practiced a little and then I had to turn ’em loose so they could get home,” said McDonald, who is coaching in his 42nd postseason. “I couldn’t get them in here (Thursday). I was too scared to bring them in because of the road conditions.”
McDonald, whose boys play West Oktibbeha at 8:30 p.m. today in the Division 4-1A tournament’s weather-delayed second round, doesn’t like interruptions – snow-related or otherwise – in his players’ routine.
“Conditioning plays a part in being ready to play,” he said. “Nobody’s conditioning today. They’re sleeping, watching TV and eating.
“We won’t be as good (Friday) as we would have been today.”
McDonald’s Lady Wildcats, who got in their practice Wednesday, play Okolona and its scoring machine, Quinndella Ford, in today’s 4 p.m. opener. Ford averages 27.8 points per game.
All 10 of Thursday’s scheduled tournaments involving Northeast Mississippi teams were postponed until today because of Wednesday’s snowfall and freezing temperatures that led to dangerous road conditions.
The winners of today’s games will play in the championships on Saturday while the losers will play in consolation games.
In classes 5A and 6A, the championships are tonight in West Point and Starkville.
The division champions enter next week’s North Mississippi tournament as No. 1 seeds while the title game loser plays as a No. 2 seed. Both will host first-round games Monday (girls) and boys (Tuesday).
The consolation game winners will be No. 3 seeds and travel to the No. 2 seed while the loser travels as a No. 4 seed to the No. 1 seed.
Houlka moved its game times up Saturday to 2, 3:30, 5 and 6:30 p.m. Other division sites have discussed moving their game times up, but no official word has been provided to the Daily Journal.
– Northeast and ICC moved their Thursday games to Saturday.
The Tigers and Indians are scheduled to play their MACJC North Division games at 11:30 a.m. (women) and 1:30 p.m. (men).
ICC’s Lady Indians are 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the North while the Indians are 11-8, 5-3. Northeast’s Lady Tigers are 10-10, 5-5 while the men are 10-11, 6-4.
– The MHSAA North Regional bowling tournament, which was rescheduled for today at Rebelanes in Tupelo has been rescheduled for Feb. 18.
The Class I and II girls will bowl the morning session while the I and II boys will compete in the afternoon. The tournament’s qualifiers will bowl Feb. 25 in Tupelo (Class II) and Jackson (Class I) for the state championship.
