West Point and Clay County inmates housing deal reached

By The Associated Press

WEST POINT — West Point and Clay County have agreed on the housing of city inmates in the county jail.

The Daily Times Leader reports that the city will pay the county $30 per inmate per day. That’s $5 less than what the county originally offered the city of West Point.

Police Chief Tim Brinkley says the city will be responsible for providing inmates with medical needs and transportation for city inmates.

Both the county and the city can opt out of the agreement given a 15 day notice.

A week ago, West Point began sending its inmates to the Chickasaw County jail, awaiting a decision by county supervisors.

Brinkley says Chickasaw County will be a backup at times there is not enough space in the Clay County for city inmates.
