West Point to vote on contract proposal

WEST POINT — The West Point Board of Selectmen is expected to consider Sept. 12 new proposal on what the city should pay Clay County for housing inmates.

On June 30, the city’s cost jumped from $30 to $42 per day per inmate.

The city and county agreed recently to lower the cost to $35 an inmate.

County officials say like any business, jail operating costs have increased over the years.

West Point could send its inmates elsewhere, but there are drawbacks including the cost of transportation and the loss of inmate labor.

If the selectmen reject that proposal, the cost will remain at $42 an inmate.
