CORINTH – The service of people who work in public safety will be honored Sunday at a “God and Country” program at Wheeler Grove Baptist Church.
Those who serve in the military, police officers, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and all others in law enforcement will be honored as special guests, said church spokesman Bro. Steve Byrd.
“We want to really let people know who our heroes are at Wheeler Grove, those who risk their lives for us every day,” Byrd said.
The event, scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon, will include special guest speaker Judge Roy Moore.
Moore is the former Alabama Supreme Court chief justice who was removed from office in 2003 for refusing to remove a 10 Commandments monument he installed in the state’s judicial building, in violation of a federal court order.
Other speakers will include Col. John Rhodes of the Mississippi Army National Guard’s 155th Brigade Combat Team and retired U.S. Army Col. Doug Hayhurst.
“We will be emphasizing the importance of the American flag, its true meaning and what it stands for,” Byrd said. A flag-folding ceremony is on the schedule.
The program evolved from a weekly church meeting in which the group wanted to have a special event to make up in some measure for the fact they had not held special ceremonies for the Fourth of July or Sept. 11.
The church, which has a memorial room to honor veterans of United States armed conflicts since World War II, also will present a slide show of Mississippi’s fallen soldiers.
“We just want to recognize and honor all of them and let them know how much we appreciate them,” Byrd said. “That’s what this Sunday is all about.”
