Regina Butler Progress Staff Writer Ecru has just sworn in five new aldermen and already one has resigned. The Progress confirmed with Mayor Mark Baldwin late Friday afternoon that alderman Jimmy Whitehead tendered his resignation and turned it into city hall. Citing that he would be moving to Oxford because of his wife’s health problems Whitehead’s resignation became official yesterday, July 11.

Whitehead said it was a sudden decision because of a doctor’s order this past Monday. “We have to move and it may be a few months before we can move, but I wanted to go on and resign and let someone else get in there and mesh with the board as quickly as possible,” Whitehead said. The board has ten days to meet and declare a special election according to town clerk Gretchin Moody. The board anticipates meeting next Thursday, July 18. A special election must be held within 45 days.

Later Friday afternoon Whitehead withdrew his resignation after many asking him not to resign. “We decided that she could live in Oxford and I will stay here and take care of town business,” he said.
