Wife of dead hunter remains in jail

STARKVILLE — The wife of a hunter found shot to death last week south of Maben is still behind bars on a $125,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing took place Monday at the Oktibbeha County Jail for 37-year-old Verina Marie Childs, who was charged with murder in the death of her husband, 32-year-old Douglas Marion Childs, on Nov. 22.

Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy George Carrithers said Douglas Childs was found shot to death by a fellow hunter. The Commercial Dispatch reports Carrithers wouldn’t disclose additional details about the shooting, citing court rules against pretrial publicity, but did say Douglas Childs was shot in the back with a rifle.

Carrithers said the Childs’ case is scheduled to go to a grand jury in January.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Childs has an attorney.
