CORINTH Several Northeast Mississippi high school golfers got in some last-minute preparation for their respective division tournaments next week by playing 18 holes Thursday at Hillandale Country Club.

But with the help of the wind and some slick greens, Hillandale sharpened its teeth in preparation for hosting the Division 1-3A Tournament Monday. With players from five schools battling the wind and Hillandale, Roderick White was the only player to break 80, helping his Alcorn Central team win its last match of the regular season.

White’s 77 on the par 71 Hillandale layout was the best individual effort by seven strokes for the day. That helped Alcorn Central total 359 to win the match, with Corinth next at 366 and New Albany at 373.

Golfers from Booneville and Kossuth also participated.

“It was definitely windy out there,” said White, who had three birdies on his front nine en route to his 77. “Overall I was pleased, though I had a couple of three-putts that disappointed me.”

Bogeys on three of the first four holes was not the start White wanted. But then he righted himself on the next five holes with birdies on the fifth, sixth and ninth holes for a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine.

“On the front nine, it seemed that if I hit a green, I birdied, and if I missed a green, I bogeyed,” White said. “I was three over after four, but the birdie on five got me going in the right direction.”

White could only manage a 40 on the par-35 back nine. That included a double bogey on No. 17, a par-4 that doglegs right to an elevated two-tier green with a very slick putting surface.

In fact, with the wind and the condition of the green, several coaches gathered at No. 17 Hillandale’s No. 1 handicap hole to watch the fun some of the players would have.

“On the 17th, I had a 4-footer downhill, then had a 10-footer coming back,” White said.

Alcorn Central teammate Adam Dodd had the next best effort of the day with an 84. Brett Carroll of Central, Ty Brown of Booneville and Riley Fowler of Corinth where next with 87s, and Geoffrey King managed an 88 to lead New Albany.

“I think the wind was a factor today early on,” said Corinth coach David Robbins, whose squad played its first 18-hole match of the season. “I wish we’d gotten some in earlier, but with the weather, this was our first opportunity to get in 18.”

Corinth, New Albany and Kossuth return to Hillandale Monday for the Division 1-3A Tournament, which tees off at 10 a.m. Alcorn Central travels to Hernando to play The Plantation for the Division 1-4A Tournament, while Booneville is at the Division 1-2A Tournament at Pontotoc Country Club, both Monday.

Other area division tournaments Monday include the Division 2-5A Tournament at Columbus Country Club and the Division 1-1A Tournament at River Birch in Amory.
