JACKSON — A 5th grade student from Winston Academy is Mississippi’s 2012 spelling bee champion.

Dev Jaiswal spelled the championship word “mordacious” in the 30th round of the bee Tuesday and advances to the 85th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., where he will compete against spelling bee champions from every state.

The Mississippi Association of Educators will fund the trip for Jaiswal and one parent for the bee, which will be televised May 30-31.

The runner-up was Desiree Roby, a 5th grade student from Christian Home Educators Connection in Hinds County. She was eliminated in Round 29 with the word “immiserization.”

Twenty-seven students from across Mississippi competed for the state title.
