TUPELO – A nationally renowned singer, education activist and motivational speaker will be in Tupelo on Monday night as part of a fundraiser for CATCH Kids.
The organization will host “An Evening With Wintley Phipps” on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Link Centre.
Phipps sang “Amazing Grace” at the Presidential Inauguration Prayer Service for Barack Obama and also sang at the National Presidential Prayer Breakfast events for the previous four U.S. presidents.
He is also the founder and chief executive officer of the U.S. Dream Academy, a nonprofit after-school program that tutors and mentors children of incarcerated parents and those who are falling behind in school.
“We’re just still in awe that a man of his caliber is coming,” said CATCH Kids executive director Valerie Long.
Tickets cost $35 and can be ordered by calling CATCH Kids at (662) 377-2194. They can also be purchased at the door.
Six levels of sponsorship are also available. Sponsors will be able to socialize with Phipps from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and attend a dinner from 6:30 to 7:15. Sponsors should call CATCH Kids by today so that dinner can be reserved.
Phipps said that he would both speak and sing at Monday night’s event. He will sing a combination of spirituals, hymns, inspirational songs and Gospel songs.
“The message that I usually bring is one of hope and inspiration to those who help the needy to keep focused on the possibilities that are in the children that they serve,” Phipps said.
CATCH Kids provides medical and dental services to needy children. It currently works in Lee, Chickasaw and Pontotoc counties.
