WALNUT – A woman died after her vehicle ran off Frogtown Road and caught fire late Tuesday afternoon, Tippah authorities said.

Frances Hopper, 83, of County Road 204, died of head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Tippah County Coroner Chad Bateman. She would have celebrated her 84th birthday April 21. She was alone in the vehicle.

The wreck took place in clear, dry weather. Investigators believe Mrs. Hopper’s westbound car came over a small hill, left the south side of the gravel road, struck an embankment, came to rest on its passenger side, then caught fire.

The wreck was not witnessed. A neighbor going to her mailbox saw flames and called 911 about 4 p.m.

Walnut police and volunteer firefighters, and Tippah deputies were soon on the scene. Rescuers used power equipment to cut into the wreckage to extract Mrs. Hopper’s body. Investigators said she was wearing a seat belt, but it had burned through.
