Woman gets 8 years, $1.4M restitution for embezzlement

OXFORD (AP) — A 45-year-old Byhalia woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzlement from companies based in Tennessee and Oklahoma.

U.S. Attorney Felicia Adams says in a news release that Kimberly Cray Burk also was ordered last week to repay $1.4 million to Mid-South Maintenance Inc. of Memphis, Tenn., and two Oklahoma companies run by its president and majority stockholder.

Burk worked in Mid-South’s payroll department from mid-September 2008 through April 2011. She pleaded guilty in April to embezzling money by wire fraud from Mid-South in Memphis and in Pryor, Okla., and from Worldwide Steel Works Inc. of Pryor.

The indictment said she used Paychex Inc., which handed direct payroll deposits for all three companies, to put money in her bank account and those of members of her family.
