Mississippi mud mulled to stave off Coast erosion
NEW ORLEANS – There’s mud – lots of it –flowing down the Mississippi River and getting washed out into the Gulf of Mexico every day.
Now, in an effort to help stave off the catastrophic loss of the mighty river’s threatened delta, the Army Corps of Engineers says it wants to take mud it routinely stirs up and dredges to keep the river open for ships and place it on the western side of the delta to build up wetlands and marsh.
The mud would be dumped in West Bay, an area at the river’s mouth.
Historically, the corps has worked to move river mud out of the shipping channel by getting it to flow out to the Gulf. But scientists say the mud should be used to restore dwindling wetlands.
