NEW ALBANY – A child killed in a fire that started late Monday night has been identified as Bryleigh Taylor, 23 months, according to Union County Medical Examiner Mark Golding.
The child was pronounced dead about 1 a.m. Tuesday after being rescued from a blaze that broke out at the Albany Acres apartment complex in west New Albany.
The body was taken Thursday to Jackson for autopsy.
Jennifer Taylor, the mother of the child, was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga. Hospital spokesman Beth Frits said Taylor was admitted on Tuesday and checked herself out the same day.
New Albany Police Chief David Grisham said his investigators have not yet talked to Taylor but that the investigation is still active.
While no authorities have said the mother bears blame for the fatal fire that also displaced nearby families, that possibility has not been ruled out.
“Once we’ve completed our investigations, we’ve got to get with the fire marshal’s office and compare their findings with what we’ve found,” Grisham said. “If the district attorney thinks charges are justified, he’ll make that decision then.”
