Youth Foundation gives more than $2,000

TUPELO – An animal shelter, free clinics and food pantries will see a boost in their budgets thanks to the Northeast Mississippi Youth Foundation.
The group, under the CREATE Foundation and made up of high school juniors and seniors, raises money every year to give to charities and other nonprofits. This year the foundation donated $2,477 to nonprofits in its 16-county coverage area. The group made a list of organizations and went with the ones that needed money the most. The checks were given to the organizations at a conference on Sunday afternoon at CREATE.
“We decided it would be easy if members from each county raised $150 each,” said chair Reagan Byrne, a senior from Houston. “We knew there were four organizations that really needed money, so we gave them $500, and the rest $159.”
Good Samaritan Center of Ripley was one of the organizations receiving $500 from the NEMYF. The center provides groceries for low-income families, and also helps them with utilities.
“Five hundred dollars will get us two deliveries of food from the food bank,” said Good Samaritan Center Director Earlene Walker. Those two deliveries, plus a delivery from USDA, will provide enough food to feed low-income families in Ripley for a month. “(This money) will help us, and it will help people in the community.”
Other organizations that also received money include Koon’s Care Free Clinic in Tippah County, which provides medical care for low-income families; the West Point/Clay County Animal Shelter; and the Chickasaw County Soccer Association, which provides soccer scholarships to underprivileged children.
For Byrne, giving the money to the organizations is the final step in a busy year for the foundation.
“It shows how all of our hard work paid off,” she said.
