SHANNON – Walter Shumpert, 67, died Monday, May 25, 2009. He was a member of Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees. He was a graduate of Siggers High School and a retired employee of Futorian.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Shannon. The Rev. George L. Kendrick will officiate. Burial will be in Fields Cemetery in Shannon. Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Eloise Shumpert of Shannon; his father, Percy Shumpert of Shannon; three children, Walter (Eurieka) Shumpert Jr. of Shannon, La’Tanya (Tirrell) Spragin of Mesquite, Texas, and La’Keysha (Randle) Witherspoon of Plantersville; three grandchildren, Candance Shumpert, Brandon Shumpert and Tirrell Spragin II; two sisters, Dorothy (Frank) Harris of Shannon and Berry (James) Hollis of Verona; three aunts, Johnnie Edwards of Tupelo, and Ruby Williams and Ruth Abbot of Cleveland, Ohio; a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lula Shumpert.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Birks, Dexter Clay, Anthony Hendrix, Antonio Martin, Rickey McCleandon, Marcus McCoy and Sanquillen McDowell.

SHALIMAR, Fla. – Sheilah Holbrook Pannell died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, after a long illness. She was born April 13, 1947, in Holly Springs to Frank and Vedie Holbrook. She had been a resident of Shalimar, Fla., since 1987. She was the owner of Kids’ Attic Pageant amp& Formal Wear. She will be missed very much, but her memories will live on forever.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Holly Springs Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. June 5 at Emerald Coast Funeral Home in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

HOULKA – Dorothy Jane Jones, 80, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at her home. She was born June 6, 1928, in Carroll County. She was a retired seamstress for Kellwood Co. and a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Carroll County.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City with the Rev. Jimmy Vance officiating. Burial will be in Crossroads Cemetery in Calhoun City.
Survivors include two daughters, Wanda Jones Braddock (Carl) of Houlka and Phyllis Orr of Leland; one son, Johnny Jones (Kaye) of Greenwood; two sisters, Norma Crutchfield of Calhoun City and Virginia Costilow of Newton; 11 grandchildren, Carl Braddock Jr., Chris Braddock, Amanda Braddock, Danielle Herbert, Donna Pierce, Billy Wayne Jones, Eddie Jones, Randy Jones, Rachel Jones, Nathan Jones and Steven Douglas Jones; and five great-grandchildren. Survivors include one son, James E. PONTOTOC – Bobby Sanford Matthews, 71, died Monday, May 25, 2009, at his residence. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and retired after 30 years with the National Park Service. He had worked part time since 1996 as a self-employed engineer with Matthews Surveying Company. He was a member of the Mississippi Association of Professional Surveyors and a Mississippi State University engineering alumnus.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today Friday at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with the Rev. Randy Kolb and the Rev. Fred Hartley officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include his daughter, Shelia Morgan (Greg) of Meridian; three sons, David Matthews and Jeff Matthews (Krystal) of Pontotoc, and Bobby Glen Matthews of Cullman, Ala.; his mother, Lucille Jenkins Matthews of Pontotoc; one brother, Ronnie Matthews of Pontotoc; the mother of his children, Maxine Matthews; six grandchildren, Kiera Nicole Morgan, Hunter Morgan, David Allen Matthews, Michael Paul Matthews, Barry Wayne Matthews and Kasandra Matthews. He was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Sanford Matthews; and two brothers, Benny Ray Matthews and Norman Lee Matthews.

RIPLEY – Evangeline Dickerson Carter, 89, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Tippah County Hospital Nursing Home in Ripley. She was born June 7, 1919, to Charles E. Dickerson and Rosa Smith Dickerson. She was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Ripley. She was formerly a ward clerk at Tippah County Hospital and a homemaker.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Connolly and Elder Gary Dunaway officiating.
Survivors include three sons, Wade Carter (Betty) of Walls, Michael Carter (Ilene) of Ripley and Ted Carter (Charlotte) of Jacinto; two special nephews, Edgar Simpson, and John David Simpson, who she raised as infants; one sister, Rose Marie Roberts (Jim) of Pontotoc; six grandchildren, Candy Chapman, Brian Carter, Curtis Carter, Joseph Carter, Jacob Sheffield and Jessie Carter; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wade Carter; her parents; one grandson, Jason Carter; six brothers; and five sisters.

AMORY – James Anthony Rollins, 39, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. He was born Dec. 25, 1969, in Amory to James Thomas and Barbara Jean Turner Rollins. He was a 1988 graduate of Amory High School and had been employed by Amory Garment and Himolene in Verona before becoming disabled. He was a member of the Cason Baptist Church. He enjoyed music, singing, riding four-wheelers and his dog, Bubba.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Shane Crawford and Bro. Sammy McMillen officiating. Burial will be in the Haughton Memorial Park.
Survivors include his parents, James and Barbara Rollins of Amory; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Roy Turner and Thomas Rollins; and his grandmothers, Lera Turner and Myrtle Weaver.

CLEVELAND – Charles Wesley Switzer, 66, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at Bolivar Medical Center in Cleveland.He was born Sept. 13, 1942, in Grayville, Ill., to Ralph Murphy and Tina Coulter Switzer. He served in the U.S. Army, and he was a member of the Grand Lodge of Mississippi. He was employed by the Mississippi Highway Patrol from 1965 to 1972 and worked until his retirement with J.J. Ferguson Construction.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Double Springs Cemetery in Maben. Ray Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

PEARL – Christine Howington Woodall, 80, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was born Feb. 3, 1929, in Little Rock, Miss., to George Franklin Howington and Mary Inez Chaney Howington. She and her late husband, Jesse Robert Woodall, moved to Pearl in 1963 from Meridian. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Brandon. She loved to sew, crochet and cook for her friends and family.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today at Ott amp& Lee Funeral Home in Brandon. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the funeral home with a 4 p.m. graveside service at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Little Rock in Newton County.

BALDWYN – Edith Vick, 70, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was a retired restaurant worker and housewife. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church. She was a mother to all the children in the neighborhood.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Kesler Funeral Home Chapel in Baldwyn with Bro. Bill Adams officating. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Vick of Baldwyn; two sons, Travis Vick and Terry Vick of Baldwyn; four grandchildren, Justin and Brandon Vick of Baldwyn, Jessica Vick of New Albany and Nicholas Vick of Saltillo; one great-granddaughter, Alaya Vick of Baldwyn; three sisters, Delfa Cornelius of Ripley, Mary Blassingame of Booneville and Lula Bell Pickens of Southaven; two brothers, Marvin Cornelius of Ripley and Buddy Cornelius of Coldwater. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alvie and Lizzie Cornelius; one brother, Earnest Cornelius.

PHILADELPHIA – Dearcie Franks, 98, formerly of Fulton, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the Choctaw Residence Center. She was born April 23, 1911, in Franklin County, Ala., to Willis Reese and Florence Afee Ozbirn. She was the oldest member of Mantachie Baptist Church. She was a factory worker and a seamstress. She enjoyed working in her yard.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Harold Ozbirn and Bro. Dewitt Bain officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Moody (Robert) of Mantachie and Bobbie Mills (W.T.) of Zion, Ill.; two sons, E.J. Bolding of Kenosha, Wis., and David Franks (Rozella) of Florence; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Bolding; a sister-in-law, Mary Ozbirn of Southaven. She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Edgar Bolding and Garrison Franks, and a son, Ed Bolding.

FULTON – Vickie Louise Patterson Gillard, 56, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born March 1, 1953, in Tupelo to James Raymond Patterson and Ruby Tackett Patterson. She lived most of her life in Northeast Mississippi, the last years in Itawamba County. She was a graduate of Shannon High School. She resided in Washington D.C. and New Orleans for about 10 years, where she worked in the theater. She was a Catholic. She enjoyed football, especially the LSU Tigers and the New Orleans Saints; catching catfish; parades, especially Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day parades; and her three dogs and a cat. She will be sorely missed by all.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris Funeral Directors with Father Tom Lollar officiating. Burial will follow in the Gilvo Cemetery in the Skyline community. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Tupelo Chapel.
