Willie C. Townsend
BRUCE – Willie C. Townsend, 69, died Friday, June 19, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lower Prairie Creek Cemetery. Belle Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

William E. Jones
FULTON – William Earl Jones, 79, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by McNeece-Morris Funeral Home.

Paul Cates
PONTOTOC – Paul Allen Cates died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at his home after a long illness. He was born on Dec. 21, 1925, to the late Christine Marris Cates and Tommy Cates. He was a lifelong resident of the Black Zion community and a member of the Black Zion Baptist Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army 10th Armored Division, and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a retired farmer, farming the land the Cates family acquired from the Chickasaw Indians.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with the Rev. Robert Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in the Black Zion Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Ann Russell Cates; his son and daughter in law, Phil and Rebecca Cates; two grandchildren, Claire and Cole Cates; three “adopted” sons, Kent Townsend, Randy Ferguson and Artie Prater; four sisters-in-law, Deloris Buskirk (Curt), Kay Pena, Loretta Gafford and Willie Vee Cates; two brothers-in-law, Wylie “Pistol” Russell (Linda) and Mike Russell (Nancy); three very special friends, Linda Dougherty, Geneva Browning and Sherry Loggins; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: his stepmother, Ruth Cates; a brother, James Thomas Cates; brothers-in-law, Sparky Russell (Laverne), Horace Pena and I.B. Gafford Jr.; sisters-in-law, Norma Powell (Jewel), Charlotte Graham (Harold) and Kathryn Allen (George).
Pallbearers will be Cole Cates, Kelly Russell, Anthony Graham, Gary Gafford, Todd Buskirk and Bill Russell. Honorary pallbearers will be Rodney Russell, Jerry Graham, Chris Russell, Robin Thornton and Chuck Richardson.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Loyd Wayne Berry
HOULKA – Loyd Wayne Berry, 66, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at his residence. He was born June 16, 1943, in Greenville to Ruben Loyd Berry and Earlene Parker Berry. He married Barbara Marsh on March 12, 1982. They made their home in Houlka, where he worked as an agronomist. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church in Pontotoc.
A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at St. Christopher Catholic Church with Father Tim Murphy and Father Gerald Peterson officiating. Baldwin-Nowell Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Marsh; two sons, James Denney (Elaine) of Nashville, Tenn., and William Denney (Lauren) of Memphis; three sisters, Paula Brown of Hohenwald, Tenn., Sherry Neal of Louisville and Belinda Bean of Hohenwald; two grandchildren, Lily Marie Denney and Grace Blanchard; one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Christopher’s Playground Fund.

Corrie Darling
BLUE SPRINGS – Corrie Bell Barber Darling, 93, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by United Funeral Service of New Albany.
Bernell Ledbetter
TUPELO – Bernell Ledbetter, 89, formerly of Belmont, died Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born May 5, 1920, in Belmont to Olen and Martha E. Shook Yarber. She was a member of West Jackson Street Baptist Church and a factory worker. An avid reader, she enjoyed quilting and growing flowers.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at West Jackson Street Baptist Church with Bro. Bert Harper officiating. Burial will be in Belmont City Cemetery. Senter Funeral Home of Fulton is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include three sons, Cecil Ledbetter Jr. (Mary) of Tinley Park, Ill., and Billy Ledbetter (Carol) and David Ledbetter (Dianne), all of Tupelo; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elna Shackelford of Florence, Ala., and Eunice Pace (J.W.) of Florence, Ala.; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marjorie Yarber.
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church.

Frances Wise Lamon
WEST POINT – Frances Wise Lamon, 85, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point. She was born Nov. 15, 1923, in Clay County to Josephine Killian Wise and Guy M. Wise. She was a homemaker. She married Rufe Merwin Lamon Sr. on Aug. 3, 1947, in West Point; he died May 15, 1997. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the West Point Garden Club. She served on the board of the N.M.R.M.H.C. and was active in many community projects over the years. She loved her family, her friends and her church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Bishop officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery in West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Susan Lamon of Dallas, Texas; one son, Rufe M. Lamon Jr. (Melinda) of Tupelo; one granddaughter, Madeline Lamon; one sister, Lila Ware of Houston, Texas; 15 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four sisters and three brothers.
Pallbearers will be Bob Wyman, Bob Marshall, Jim Chandler, Sonny Jameson, Phil McClellan, Randy Jones, Chuck Cliett and Jeffrey Cantrell. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. T.N. Braddock, Dr. Gordon Hazard, Greg Cotton, Kenny Dill, Charlie Cliett, Fox Haas, Carey Jones and George Jones.

Doris Hulsey
NEW ALBANY – Doris Raines Hulsey, 67, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at yhe Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany. She was born Nov. 3, 1941, in New Albany to Doyle Mayes Raines and Loyce Irene Gaines Raines. She was a devoted homemaker and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. She enjoyed doing her civic duty.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Funeral Service Chapel with Bro. Bill Everett and Bro. Wallace officiating. Burial will be at Vista Memorial Park in New Albany.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Whitehead (Don) of Oxford and Christy Holcombe (Jeffrey) of Huntsville, Ala.; one brother, Jerry Doyle Raines of Ecru; two grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Whitehead and Anna Kathryn Whitehead, both of Oxford. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Larry Hulsey.
Pallbearers will be Walter Johnson, Mike Randle, David Jernigan, Red Nowlin, Howard Roberts and James Criddle.

Jeff Potts
BLUE SPRINGS – Jeffrey “Jeff” Daniel Potts, 31, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at his residence. He was an automotive technician and a member of Sherman Baptist Church. An accomplished musician, he was a drummer for the band OCD. He was an excellent cook. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson and uncle.
Services were Wednesday, June 17, at United Funeral Service in New Albany with the Rev. Bud Wheatley officiating. Burial was in Flat Rock Cemetery in Blue Mountain.
Survivors include his wife, Regina Lynn Potts of Fulton; his mother and second father, Mary Elizabeth and Bill O’Callaghan of Blue Springs; his father and stepmother, Robert Glenn and Shelia Potts of Tupelo; three sisters: Angela Louise Whittaker (Jason) of Peppertown, Mandy Webb of Tremont and Tonja Richardson of Blue Springs; his grandparents, Robert and Helen Potts of Tupelo, and Bobbie Nell O’Callaghan of Blue Springs; a special uncle, Jerry Potts of New Albany; special cousins, Wes Potts, Amanda Potts, Melissa Childers and Crystal Gordon; his nieces, Lisha Fancher (Martin) and Kristen Whittaker (Zack); his great-nephew, Christian; several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dan and Louise Burns, and B.M. O’Callaghan Jr.

Milton A. Benefield
NEW ALBANY – Milton A. Benefield died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Baptist Hospital East in Memphis. He was born March 11, 1931, to Dave A. and Wilma Jeter Benefield. He lived in Union County for 68 years. He was a retired farmer, a certified welder and a sanitation contractor. He was a member of Fredonia Baptist Church and a Mason for 50 years. He was a good husband, father and provider, and he loved his family, country and God. He enjoyed working and gardening, fishing, hunting and visiting with his many friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Glenfield Funeral Home of New Albany with Dr. Chris Aldridge and Bro. Clyde Pound officiating. Burial will be in Vista Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Claylene McLaughlin Benefield of New Albany; one daughter, Deborah Robison of New Albany; one grandchild, Chuck Robison of New Albany; one brother, Simmie C. Benefield of New Albany; four sisters, Elizabeth Kidd of Tupelo, Jamie Robbins (Earnest) of New Albany, Polly Poindexter of Olive Branch and Lottie Sprous of New Albany. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Fred Benefield; and two sisters, Lavada Huffstatler and Mary Emma Benefield.
Pallbearers will be David Smith, J.R. Benefield, Wayne Benefield, Rick Tucker, Mike Kitchens, John Wilhite, Keith Thompson and Ricky Tate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

James Shepherd
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – James Raiford Shepherd, 46, died Sunday, June 21, 2009. He was born in Tuscaloosa County, Ala., on Dec. 24, 1962. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was employed as an engineer with T-Mobile.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville with the Rev. Jane Hubbard and the Rev. Reginald Parsons officiating. Hutcheson’s Memorial Chapel & Crematory of Buchanan, Ga., is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Parsons Shepherd of Douglasville; one son, Christopher Myles Shepherd of Douglasville; one brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Lisa Shepherd of Amory; his parents, Bill and Ailese Duncan Shepherd of Moundville, Ala.

CORINTH – Daisy McClellan Bowden, 84, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at her home in Corinth.
Services will be at noon Friday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Corinth. Burial will be in the National Cemetery in Corinth. Patterson Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Terri Mims Roberts
PLANTERSVILLE – Teresa Leigh “Terri” Mims Roberts, 48, died suddenly on Monday, June 22, 2009, in Lee County. She was born in Tupelo on Jan. 27, l961, to Larry and Laverne Wilson Mims. A lifelong Lee County resident, she graduated from Shannon High School and attended Itawamba Community College. She was a member of the Plantersville United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She had formerly managed the family dress shop in Tupelo, the Fashion Corner, for 11 years. At her death, she was an assistant teacher at Plantersville School. She enjoyed life and living, spending quality time with her family and friends, especially her children and granddaughter, and was particularly fond of Florida’s many beautiful beaches where she spent as much time as possible. She will be sorely missed by all.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland-Harris Funeral Directors with Minister Jim Allen officiating and Bro. William Shack delivering the eulogy. A family committal service will follow in the Mims-McGaughy family plot at Plantersville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time today.
Survivors include two daughters, April Nicole “Nikki” Mask (Chad) and Kaley Rena Williams, all of Shannon; her son, Steven “Dusty” Williams of Plantersville; her parents, Col. Larry and Laverne Mims of Plantersville; one grandchild, Bailey Lynn Williams of Shannon; two brothers, Larry “Kirk” Mims (Milli) of Benton, Ark., and Kelly Mims (Lynn) of Palmetto; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Bill Roberts, Ray Williams, Ken Miles, Jackie Wimberly, Mike Ellis and David Payne. Honorary pallbearers will be Coach Kenneth Jones, David Burgett, Phil Woods, Phillip Owen and Mike Hare.
