TUPELO – Our Dad, Johnny Clinton “J.C” Reedy, has gone to heaven to be with our Mom, Merlene, where we know he will forever be happy. Dad was born in Tupelo on July 25, l930, to Newsome “Luther” Reedy and Purney Scribner Reedy, and lived here in this city he loved all his life. He graduated from Tupelo High School in l950 and served proudly in the United Stated Air Force. He was an active member of the American Legion and the VFW. As a Legionnaire, he gave countless hours of service to Post 49 and all Legion causes. A fiercely patriotic American, J.C. also had many dear friends who we know will miss him. Dad was from a family of 12 brothers and sisters. He is survived by sisters, Glynn Service, Gin Collins, Peggy Curtis and Barbara Prude.

A celebration of his life, with military honors, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday from the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with American Legion Chaplain MSGT William Shack officiating. Jack Cristil will deliver the eulogy and his son, Rob, son-in-law, Pat, daughter-in-law, Dot and Mike Altom delivering personal and family reflections. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to service time on Friday.

FULTON – Verlene Moore Leathers, 89, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, from the Sanctuary Hospice House. Verlene was born May 2, 1922, to Charlie Moore and Tressie Morris Moore. She married James L. “Lebern” Leathers on Aug. 17, 1942. She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church, a homemaker, a hairdresser and a servant of the Lord.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Danny Horton, Mark McNair, and Daryl Sanderson officiating. Burial will be in Itawamba Memorial Gardens. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Leathers is survived by her husband of 69 years, James “Lebern” Leathers; one son, Don (Debi) Leathers of Iuka; one granddaughter, Kristi Rogers (Dave) Brown of Gulfport; two grandsons, Dustin Leathers of Atlanta, Ga., and Preston (Kala) Leathers of Starkville; one great-granddaughter, Presley Kate Leathers, of Starkville; the mothers of her grandsons, Jan Lancaster of Tupelo and Pam Dallas of Pontotoc, respectively; two sisters, Fay (Gerald) Stafford of Sherman and Thelma (Bob) Waters of Tupelo; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tressie and Charlie Moore; a son, James Gary Leathers; and two sisters, Charlie Mae Leathers and Uneta Henderson.
Pallbearers will be her nephews, Larry Henderson, Bill Henderson, Rickey Leathers, Kenny Horton, Craig Horton and Drew Lumsden.
Visitation will continue until service time today at the funeral home.

BOONEVILLE – Sherri Lynn Anderson York, 45, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. She was born Aug. 25, 1965, to Marion and Maxine Chance Anderson. She worked as a heavy machinery operator for Kimes and Stone Construction. She loved her special pet, Jasper.
Services will be 2 p.m. today at McMillan Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the New Site Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Roy York Jr.; two daughters, Jennifer (Mitchell) Pounds of Booneville and Christina Nicole (Norman) Browning of New Albany; two sons, James (Jennifer) Taylor of Baldwyn and Joshua Ryan York; four grandchildren, Braxton Pounds, Braley Pounds, Brianna Taylor and Brigit Pounds; parents-in-law, Lisa and Thomas Roy York Sr.; a brother-in-law, Billy Crossen of New Albany; and special friends, Amanda and Dustin Cole.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Sharon Crossen; two brothers, Robert Hill and James Gingerich; and her best friend, Natasha Cole.

PINEDALE – Debra Sue Bolen Jenkins, 49, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at The Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born in Union County on March 19, 1962, to Samuel Lavaught Bolen and Denia Elizabeth Hudson Bolen. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Dale Baptist Church. She loved going to church and playing the piano.

TREMONT – Zachary D. Summerford, 20, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011. He was born Feb. 18, 1991, in Amory. He was employed at Tombigbee Lumber and Wayside Equipment Sales. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding four-wheelers.

OLIVE BRANCH – Bennie M. “Pennie” Pennington died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. Born on April 16, 1927, in Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel R. and Rosa Belle Pulliam Montgomery.
She loved to read and spend time caring for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Unfortunately, her shaking hands kept her from doing a lot of the things she enjoyed.
She is survived by a son, Douglas W. Pennington (Debbie) of Olive Branch; sisters, Pernie Hester of Memphis, Tula Hollingsworth of the Athens Community, and Alice Best of Becker; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Pennington; daughter, Judy Fenton; and four sisters and three brothers.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 18, at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Wesley Stephens officiating. Burial will follow in Hatley Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Edward Best, Richard Montgomery, Steve Hester, Michael Pennington, Chris Pennington and Dwight Holcombe. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Rorie, Wayne McKinzie, Bobby Cox, Bobby Hollingsworth and Tommie Best.

BRUCE – Millard Hughes, 100, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, at the Bruce Community Living Center. He was born Jan. 15, 1911, in Calhoun County. He was a retired farmer and night watchman. He was a Baptist. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Cobb, the Rev. Robert Earl Alexander and the Rev. Ken Hanks officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery at Bruce. Pryor Funeral Home of Calhoun City is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Jewell Duvall of Tupelo, and Pearlene Saxon and Jane Farmer (Joe), both of Bruce; 25 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois P. Lancaster Hughes; his parents, Moses Eldridge Hughes and Cora Massey Hughes; a daughter, Shirley Hughes; three sons, James Earl Hughes, Ottis Hughes and Charles Hughes; and a grandson, Ronnie Saxon.

She was a retired insurance representative. She was a member of Grand Heights Baptist Church in Memphis and a former member of Lowry Methodist Church in Ripley.

TUPELO – Dennis Farrar Bailey, 67, Plantersville native and internationally recognized opera singer and performer, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at his daughter’s residence in Tupelo after a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with private burial in the Bailey family plot at Plantersville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday.
