Gerald Hand
PONTOTOC – Gerald Wayne Hand, 65, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at his home surrounded by his wife and children by his side. Gerald was born on Jan. 4, 1948, to Jeffer Nordean and Lourie Marie Berryhill Hand.

After he graduated from Saltillo High School, he joined the United States Army and faithfully served his country during the Vietnam conflict and was also for a time stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He was a fireman with the Tupelo Fire Department from 1970-1978. He married Pam Clippard on Aug. 8, 1978, and they made their home in the Pontotoc area. He worked 25 years with Boatwright Motors in Pontotoc and after retiring from there worked at Hill Auto Parts. Gerald was an avid coin collector, a history buff, enjoyed hunting and loved to fish.

Gerald’s survivors include his devoted wife of 35 years, Pam Hand of Pontotoc; five children, Gerald Hand II (Michelle) of Myrtle, Kitty Hand Pittman (Tud) of Pontotoc, Lesley Faye Hand Smith (Chop) of Mooreville, Hannah Marie Hand Chunn (Josh) of Pontotoc and Dwayne Seely (Sylvia) of New Albany; 12 grandchildren, Zoe, Penelope, Carsyn, Silas, Charlotte, Austin, Abby, Gage, Hope, Dalton, Don and Anna Claire; his sister, Shelia Reed (Roger) of Tupelo; his brother, Mike Hand (Debbie) of Pontotoc; his special niece, Jennifer Farrar (William) and their children, Chaise and Jackson of the Eggville community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeffer and Marie Hand, and his brother, Kenneth Hand.

His pallbearers will be Dean Griffin, Rickey Boatwright, William Farrar, Tud Pittman, Chop Smith, Josh Chunn and Jerry Hester.

His honorary pallbearers will be Silas Smith and Austin Chunn.

A celebration of Gerald’s life with military honors will be 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Ken Hester officiating. A graveside service will follow at Baldwyn Memorial Gardens in Pontotoc.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 29, 2013, at the funeral home.

Jessie N. Orman
ASHLAND – Jessie Newton Orman was born Oct. 11, 1929, to Vance and Mattie Grisham Orman in Tippah County. He was a Baptist and was a former pirotechnician for the Pace Company in Cordova, Tenn. He retired from Chris Filders as a mechanic. After retirement he enjoyed farming and helping his friends and family.

Surrounded by his family, he passed from this life on Aug. 27, 2013, at the home of his granddaughter.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 29, 2013, at New Hope Baptist Church with Bro. Zachary Howell and Bro. David Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Little Hope Cemetery in Falkner.

He is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Dorothy Strickland Orman; two daughters, Pam (Steve) Short and Debbie (the late Tommy) Rooker; four grandchildren, Amy (Andy) Parker, Jessie Rooker, April Rooker and Adam (Brittany) Short; one great-granddaughter, Julianne Grace Parker; one brother, Lonnie (Doc) Orman; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vance and Mattie Orman; brothers, Clarence, Melvin, Pink and infant twin; and one sister, Gracie Orman Mauney.

Visitation will held from 11 a.m. until service time at New Hope Baptist Church in Benton County with Ripley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers are Tom Mauney, Larry Short, Larry Nance, Jackie Mauney, Tim Mauney and Gary Orman. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Hartley and Kenny Orman.

Charles McGonagill
OXFORD – Charles C. McGonagill, 72, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at his home in Oxford. Born in Oxford, he was the retired owner and president of Ja Marc Construction Co. Inc. He was a member of College Hill Heights Baptist Church. An avid outdoorsman, he was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the first Mississippi Duck Master. He was a Mason and Shriner. He was a loving son, husband, father and brother.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Waller Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Dickinson officiating. Burial will follow in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Frances “Frankie” McGonagill of Oxford; his mother, Louise Goolsby McGonagill of Oxford; a daughter, Gail Williams of Geneseo, Kan.; two sons, Mark C. McGonagill of Oxford and John Watts of Ripley, Tenn.; one sister, Sharron McGonagill Pennington; one brother, Cary G. McGonagill; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. McGonagill.

BANNER – Jeanie Mathis Quattlebaum, 76, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at her home. She was born Feb. 9, 1937, in Water Valley. She was a homemaker and a former general store owner in Banner.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce with Elder Ed Easley officiating. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery at Banner.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Stewart Quattlebaum of Banner; one brother, John Thomas Mathis (Catherine) of Tupelo; three grandchildren, Heaven Lynn Quattlebaum West (Daniel) of Slate Springs, Susan Ann Quattlebaum (Robert Lee Fulton) of Banner and William Taylor Smith of Bruce; and one great-grandson, James Paul Bland of Banner.

Maxie Russell
PONTOTOC – Maxie Day Russell, 80, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at the Coen House at Traceway Manor. She was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Pontotoc. She was a devoted wife and mother of seven children, and an experienced seamstress. She worked for Sears and most recently as a 20-year employee of Walmart, where she enjoyed greeting and welcoming customers. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, singing and studying God’s word.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at West Heights Baptist Church. Bro. David Hamilton will officiate. Burial will be in Pontotoc Memorial Garden. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include seven children, Teresa Chism (J.C.), Steve Russell (Sherry) and Ben Russell (Amanda), all of Pontotoc, Twyla Loftiss (Johnny) of Coldwater, Patty Stouffer (Stu) of Richardson, Texas, Pam Starkey of Charlotte, N.C., and Nina Konzak (Michael) of Spring, Texas; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, Patrick “Dewey” Day.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mack and Maggie Day; her husband, Clifford Ray Russell; grandson, Adam Chism; and four siblings, Glover Day, Troy Day, Sue Day Oakes and Shelby Day.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Chad Chism, John Russell, Luke Russell, Ian Konzack, Alex Konzack, John Loftiss III, Brennan Russell and Adam Russell.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

Virgie Potts
BOONEVILLE – Virgie Mae Potts, 98, formerly of West Union, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013. She was born in the Salem community of Union County on Aug. 15, 1915, to James Pinkney Morris and Era Verona Graham Morris. She married William Milburn Potts on April 14, 1934. They made their home first in the Salem community and later in the West Union community. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship Methodist Church in West Union. Known for her green thumb, she won many blue ribbons at the Union County fair for vegetables and flowers that she grew in her garden. She also won awards for her beautiful needlework which included quilting, smocking, and crocheting. She was known throughout her community for her delicious tea cakes and peanut brittle. She continued to reside in the West Union community until May 2, 2008, when her home was destroyed by the tornado that devastated parts of Union County and surrounding areas. She lived for the past five years with Gene and Betty Gifford.

She is survived by one daughter, Betty Potts (Gene) Gifford of Thrasher; three grandchildren, Sharon Gifford (Jeff) Cheek of Thrasher, Tracey Gifford (Tim) Smith of Corinth and Ginger Gifford (Brandon) Kizer of Oxford; and great-grandchildren, Lauren Cheek, Gracie Cheek, Houston Cheek, Savannah Smith, Victoria Smith, Nyles Smith, Annalyn Carpenter and Olivia Carpenter.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, William Milburn Potts, who died Feb. 15, 1990; her parents, Robert and Era Morris; her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mable Morris; and her sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Alvis Long.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at United Funeral Service in New Albany. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Cheek, Tim Smith, Brandon Kizer, Dwayne Stroud, Chris Holloway and Mickey Wood.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time today.

WEST POINT – Mary Larry, 83, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at West Point Community Living Center in West Point.

Dorothy L. Hayes
IUKA – Dorothy L. Hayes, 96, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Southern Magnolia Estates in Iuka. Prior to returning to her hometown of Iuka in 1973, she had previously lived in New Hope, Ala., and Guntersville, Ala. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church. She was a Sunday school teacher there and at New Hope United Methodist Church for many years. She was a dedicated Christian and loved to help others. She had a special love for children and always set a good example for them to follow. She also enjoyed gardening and canning vegetables.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Harmony United Methodist Church. The Rev. Ronnie Goodwin and the Rev. Mary Lou Tickell will officiate. Interment will follow in Harmony Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include one daughter, Sara Hayes of Iuka; one son, Thomas Hayes of Guntersville, Ala.; one grandchild, Tracy Bond (Jonathan) of Arab, Ala.; three great-grandchildren, Erika England, Emma Kate Bond and Mollie Bond, all of Arab, Ala.; and her friend, Sharon Hayes of Guntersville, Ala.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Flavil Hayes; her parents, Finch and Nellie Dean Davis; and four brothers, E.L. “Dick” Davis, Elmer Davis, Elam Davis and Emmett Davis.

Pallbearers include Marty Davis, Nick Davis, Matthew Davis, Perry Anglin, Yancy Pounders and Michael Harwell.

Visitation is scheduled for 5 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will lie in repose at the church for one hour prior to service time.

Scott Young
DAVENPORT, Fla. – Scott Taylor Young, 49, formerly of Booneville, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at his home after an extended illness. He was born Oct. 22, 1963, in Booneville to Norman Young and the late Genevieve Massey Young. He was a graduate of Booneville High School and attended Northeast Mississippi Community College. Upon moving to Florida he worked at Orange Lake Resort and became a longtime Disney cast member at Walt Disney World.

He made the world a better place, bringing love and laughter to everyone he met. He had a heart of gold and went out of his way to help others. He loved spending time with his family and friends, riding his motorcycle, watching the sunrise over the ocean and his cat, Bojing.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at McMillan Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A previous service was held in Orlando at First Baptist Church where he was a member.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Hernandez Young of Davenport, Fla.; his father, Norman Young of Booneville; two sisters, Becky (Donald) Harris of Booneville and Norma (Paul) Hamilton of Roswell, Ga.; and four nieces, Mandi Harris of Southaven, Kristen and Michelle Hamilton of Roswell, and Jennifer Hamilton of New York City.

He was preceded in death by his mother; and his grandparents, Rid and Myrtle Massey, Lila Tays Young and Frank Young.

Anita Walker
OXFORD – Anita Swaim Walker, 87, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at her home in Oxford. She was born in Pontotoc County to Bill Code and Maggie Elizabeth Swaim. She was a member of Toccopola Baptist Church, and owner and operator of Nita’s Beauty Shop. At the age of 70, she and her husband toured the United States, Canada and Mexico on motorcycle. She was a member of several motorcycle clubs.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Waller Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Taylor and Rev. Earl Rush officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth D. Walker; three daughters, Paula W. Shanks, Cathy P. Herren and Debbie W. Pike; one son, Tony M. Walker; one sister, Sibyl S. Collums; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Inez S. Newell.

IUKA – Hazel Pearl Wilson Martin, 79, formerly of Sheffield, Ala., died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was of the Baptist faith.

HOUSTON – Naomi Kathlene Williford Talley, 58, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born Aug. 12, 1955, in Stonewall to Lloyd Williford and Wanda Putt Williford.
