SHANNON – Robert Wayne “Sonny” Birks died Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, in Shannon. He accepted Christ at an early age. He was baptized at Jerusalem Baptist Church and remained a member his entire life. He attended Shannon and Nettleton schools. He was a self-employed tractor and truck driver. He enjoyed working outside.

He is survived by his wife, Jaunita Walker Birks of Shannon; his parents, Mozell Curry of Shannon and Lee Ellis Birks of Guntown; four children, Demethra Rochell Birks, Shandon Hodges-Birks and Michael Christopher Birks, all of Chicago, and Detrick Benard Birks of New York, N.Y.; two stepchildren; two sisters, Mary Coleman and Pearl Isby of Shannon; 13 grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; two aunts, Viola Foster of Plantersville and Shirley Marshall of Nettleton; an uncle, Clyde Morris of Chicago; and a special cousin and friend, John Thomas Morris Jr. of Nettleton.

TUPELO – Sarah Doxey Tate Greer, 80, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after a long illness.

HOULKA – Betty Lou Pulliam, 70, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Community Hospice in Verona. A native of Chickasaw County, she was the daughter of Dave Hamilton and Louise Chambers. She was a member of Trinity Church Of God in Christ in Houston where she served on the mother’s board. She loved traveling, shopping, her grandkids and, most of all, going to church.
A celebration of life service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at Trinity Church of God in Christ. Elder Glenn Huggins will officiate. Burial will be in East County Line Cemetery in Houlka. Kenneth I Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Leroy Pulliam of Houlka; two daughters, Valerie (Jessie) McGregory of Okolona and Sherron (Tony) Horton of Saltillo; four sons, Gary (Tina) Pulliam of Pontotoc, Michael Pulliam of Houlka, Steven (Denise) Pulliam of Tupelo and Clifford (Beverly) Pulliam of Houston; one sister, Betty (Larry) McAlister of Houlka; one brother, Willie Lee Hamilton of Beloit, Wis.; 23 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

PONTOTOC – Ruby V. Collums, 92, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Graceland Care Center in Pontotoc. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 31, at Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc. Burial will follow in the Guinn Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survivors by her children, Tony Collums of Albuquerque, N.M., Keith Collums (Rhoda) of Braunfelds, Texas, Ann Davis (John) of Oxford, Marie Collums of Pontotoc and Genice Tutor (L.V.) of Randolph; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dempsey Collums; her parents, Escar and Effie Castleberry; two sisters, Lila Tutor and Ollie Bell Morris; two brothers, Bernis Castleberry and Gerald Castleberry; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanette White Collums.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

NETTLETON – Chester Burt, 87, died on Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was a son of the late Phil and Birda Rogers Burt. He attended school in the Pleasant Grove School System. He joined the U.S. Navy and faithfully served his country during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He was of the Methodist faith and a member of Palestine United Methodist Church where he served as trustee and a member of the male choir. He loved his pastor and church family. A farmer by trade, he later became an employee of Pennsylvania Tire Company in Tupelo and then True Temper Sports of Amory until he retired. He enjoyed working in his garden and serving the community out of all of it.
He loved his wife and his family members.
He is survived by his wife, Willie Lue Arnold Burt of Plantersville; one daughter, Rita Arnold of Plantersville; one brother, Roger Burt of Nettleton; and one sister, Oddie Mae Clemons of Fulton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Martell Burt and Elmore Burt; and one sister, Fannie Lagrone.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, at Palestine United Methodist Church in Nettleton with the Rev. Maurice McIntosh officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Dorsey. Darden and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday with a family hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Palestine United Methodist Church in Nettleton.

CALHOUN CITY – Alvin William Mann Jr., 51, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Calhoun Health Services in Calhoun City. He was born Dec. 1, 1961, in Vardaman to Alvin Mann and Barbara Gentry. He was a farmer for Johnson Farms and a member of Bentley Baptist Church.
He is survived by his special friend for 33 years, Shirley Clayton of Calhoun City; three sons, William Corey Clayton and Chris Clayton, both of Calhoun City, and William Kirby Mann of California; his mother, Barbara Gentry of Coffeeville; a sister, Teresa (James) Broughman of Coffeeville; two brothers, Billy (Melinda) Mann of Pontotoc; and Arvin Rochell of Ruleville; two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin Mann.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City. The Rev. Howard Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery at Mathiston.

GUNTOWN – Barbara Davis, 63, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born April 4, 1950, to James and Georgia Smith. She was a Baptist and a retired employee of Adair Carpets. She enjoyed flower gardening, hummingbirds and her pets.

PONTOTOC – Patricia Ann Dykes, 68, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House. She was born July 15, 1945, in Panola County to Arlis and Mary Lou Mask. She was a longtime seamstress in the furniture industry. She was a Baptist. She enjoyed going to auctions and making homemade rugs.

Survivors include her longtime friend and companion, Ricky Tackitt of Pontotoc; her children, Michael Dykes of Oregon, Bobby Dykes of Atlanta, Ga., Tracey Monts (Tim) of Houlka and Micky Dykes of Pontotoc; two sisters, Mary Dykes (Ira) of Aberdeen and Belinda McKinney (Pat) of Vicksburg; three brothers, Jimmy Mask (Christa), Ricky Mask and Randy Mask, all of Pontotoc; six grandchildren, Brittney Monts, Tasha Monts, Tim Monts Jr., Katelyn Monts, Madison Monts and Brandon Monts; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

FULTON – Nina Sue Burnette, 65, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Care after a short illness. She was born Sept. 4, 1947, to Bill and Bertha Cockrell Bennett. She had worked at Reed’s Manufacturing and Air Cap, and as a mail carrier. She was a Baptist in belief. She loved growing flowers and vegetables and giving them to her family and friends. She was a loving and kind woman.

OKOLONA – Leler Thompson Walker, 83, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Amory. She was born April 12, 1930, to Lincoln and Charity Thompson. She was a member of Chapel Grove East, president of the Usher Board and treasurer of the Missionary Society. She was a former employee of Shearer Richardson.

AMORY – Donna Lynn Morris, 54, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo. Born Feb. 22, 1959, in Elgin, Ill., she was the daughter of the late William Francis and Elizabeth Jane Cates Miller. She attended school in Mooreville, and lived the last 34 years in Amory, working for the Monroe County Department of Human Services for 12 years. She attended First Assembly of God and her faith was a guiding part of her life. A very loving, big hearted, giving and caring person, Donna enjoyed being with her family, especially her granddaughter, Libby. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, painting and collecting antiques.
She is survived by her sons, Scott Morris (Melonie) and Cody Dapp, all of Nettleton; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Morris.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Wayne Miller.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. today, Aug. 31, at Haughton Memorial Park with Bro. Robert Bingham officiating.
Pallbearers will be Jason Thorn, Dutch Vaughn, Larry Cates, David Pickle, Adam Stacy and Dr. Roger Ratliff. Honorary pallbearers will be the Royal Rangers of First Assembly of God in Amory.
