Ruby M. Hill
SALTILLO – Ruby M. Hill, 82, was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Greenwood and died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at home after succumbing to a lengthy illness. Ruby was a loving and faithful wife to her husband, Johnny Hill, for 54 years, and a rock and unshakable foundation for her children, Linda and Bubba Bill.

Ruby worked in the garment industry for 25 years and then helped in the family business started by her husband in the 1960’s. She became a homemaker in the mid-1970’s and loved caring for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved her pets, which she cared for with great tenderness.

Ruby was a loving member of First Christian Church in Baldwyn. Her hobbies included keeping a spotless house, cooking for her family, caring for friends and family who were in need, and she also loved fishing better than Bill Dance, and to tell the truth, she was better at it.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at the Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kelly Carmichael officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.

Ruby is survived by her children, Linda D. Hill of West Memphis, Ark., and John (Bubba) Hill of Baldwyn; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wiley Miles Crick; her mother, Ruby Pyron Crick; three sisters, Lois Hill, Elnora Maine, Joyce McHaffey; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Rose Hill; and a great granddaughter, Montana Rose Roberts.

Pallbearers will be Lee Parker, Lee Brooks, Jake Martin, Jakob Roberts, Jeff Michaels and Gerald Hill. Serving as honorary pallbearer is Blaine Martin.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Zora Tate
BALDWYN – Zora Tate, 92, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at Longwood Living Center in Booneville. She was born Jan. 23, 1921, to Aaron Tate and Truddie Pannell Tate. She was a member of New Tabernacle M.B. Church in Baldwyn. She worked as a cook in restaurants for many years, at Guntown Slack Manufacturing and retired from Mid-South Packers in Tupelo.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at New Tabernacle M.B. Church with the Rev. Alphonso Adkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Agnew & Sons Funeral Home of Baldwyn is in charge of arrangement.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six siblings; one daughter, Emma Shelley; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include six children, Jimmy Grice (Brenda), Irene Crump (Clyde), Stella Billups ( Joe), David Tate (Sonya), Peggy Tate (Lawrence) and Martha Swinney (Bobby); a son-in-law, Wesley Shelley; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one aunt, Evelyn Hurd of Denver, Colo.; and two special nieces, Mildred Billups and Judy Price.

Bessie Nix
BOONEVILLE – Bessie Mae Johnson Nix, 85, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at her home. She was born Jan. 18, 1928, in Hurley to Preston Brooks Johnson and Addie Mae Carter Johnson. She was a member of Martin Hill Free Will Baptist Church. She was a machine operator at the Kellwood plant for 30 years. She also was a homemaker and an employee of Northeast Mississippi Homemaker Services. She enjoyed spending time with her family, helping raise her grandchildren, cooking and her work.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 7, at Martin Hill Free Will Baptist Church with Bro. Rodney Brazil and Bro. Jack Whitley Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Memorial Garden. Booneville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She is survived by three sons, Junior Nix, Billy Nix and Terry Nix (Cheryl), all of Booneville; two daughters, Sherry Nanney (Dexter) and Judy Chittom (Randy), all of Booneville; 16 grandchildren, Kandy Rhodes (Chris), Michele Prentiss, Tracy Fitzsimmons, Melissa James (Michael), Cindy Greene (Jonathan), Alina Nix, Kylie Nix, Benny Nix (Lori), Jackie Nix (Kathy), Philip Nix (Kim), T.J. Nix (Tiffany), Bobby Chittom (Lala), Luke Chittom (Kristen), Ricky Nanney (Christie), Jamie Nanney (Sondra) and William Prentiss (Tammy); 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Nix Sr., on Aug. 18, 1992; a daughter, Dorothy McCarley; three great-grandsons, John Andy Nanney, Austin Rhodes and Dakota Nanney; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Nix.

Pallbearers are William Charles Prentiss, Benny Nix, Jackie Nix, Phil Nix, Ricky Nanney, Jamie Nanney, Bobby Chittom, Luke Chittom and T.J. Nix.

SHADY GROVE – Thomas Frederick Barney, 72, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice in Tupelo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Shady Grove Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.

Duane Murley
BOONEVILLE – Terry Duane Murley, 82, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice in Tupelo. He was born Sept. 12, 1930, to A.E. and Myrtle Wallis Murley. He was a former deacon and a member of Dry Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed working, fishing, hunting, piddling in the yard and playing with his dog, Little Bit.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at McMillan Funeral Home in Booneville with Bro. Earl Barron and Bro. Rex Bullock officiating. Burial will be in Dry Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Gaylia McDonald, Anita (Randy) Jackson and Melissa (Gregg) Scruggs, all of Booneville; two sisters, Leona Lowrie and Ramona Bullock; eight grandchildren, Monica (Stevie) Hatfield, Matthew (Brandy) Barkley, Codie (Nikki) Jackson, Amber (Britt) Treece, Katelan (Tyler) Culwell, Michael White, Logan Scruggs and Tucker Scruggs; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Earnestine Yates Murley, in 2007; his parents; two sisters, Ruby Cater and Dorothy Bates; and his twin brother, Wayne Murley.

Pallbearers are Randy Jackson, Gregg Scruggs, Stevie Hatfield, Codie Jackson, Tyler Culwell and Ernie McCoy.

Carolyn Smith
TUPELO – Carolyn “Tolly” Smith, 75, passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at her residence after an extended illness. An Itawamba County native, she was born March 24, 1938, to Hershel and Sophia Reed Wheeler. In 1955 she graduated from Itawamba High School and on July 23, married her husband of 58 years, Gary Smith. Together they owned and operated Smith & Brumley Athletic House in Southaven for 30 years. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed shopping. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and cherished time spent with them. She was a member of West Main Church of Christ.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 2013, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Minister Doug Greenway officiating and eulogy by Terry Brumley and Craig Bean. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Smith of Tupelo; two children, Vicki Dye (Jimmy) of Tupelo and Tim Smith (Rhonda) of Brandon; five grandchildren, Jeremy Green (Keely) of Tupelo, Jason Smith (Keri) of Morton, Jamie Smith (Bridgett) of Nettleton, and Amanda Parham and Allison Smith, both of Vicksburg; 12 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Jackie Brumley of Columbus, Betty Jeffcoat (Bill) of Murry, Ky., and Molly Smith (Doug) of Fulton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and seven siblings, Reva Gurley, Louise Barnes, Basil Wheeler, Jo Bean, Terry Wheeler, Junior Wheeler and Yvonne Rogers.

Pallbearers will be Joe Reed Brumley, Tim Wood, Jeff Rogers, and Shane, Bronson and Braxton Smith.

MOOREVILLE – James Leon White, 83, passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born April 17, 1930, to Jack and Ruly Johnson White. He previously worked at Lee County Road Department and Tupelo Ford Tractor. He was a welder and metal worker. He enjoyed auctions, gardening, and watching wrestling with his wife, Syble.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Bro. Mark Tutor officiating. Burial will be in the Boguefala Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Syble White; three sons, Rick White (Linda), Randy White (special friend, Dee) and Andy White (special friend Pam), all of Mooreville; five grandchildren, Brandon White (Wendy), Shun White, April Dawn White, Coby White and Austin Veasey; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by the mother of his sons, Lottie White; two sisters, Audra Hammock and Mary E. White; and his parents.

Earl Vanzile Sr.
NEW ALBANY – Earl Vanzile Sr., 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Sept. 24, 1931, in Butler, N.J., to Norman and Gussie Miller Vanzile. He was a stone and brick mason by profession. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 7, at United Funeral Service in New Albany. Services will be held at a later date at the Crossman Funeral Home in Lisbon Falls, Maine, with burial in the Woodlawn Cemetery in West Bowdoin, Maine. United Funeral Service is in charge of local arrangements.

Survivors include two sons, Earl Vanzile Jr. (Lisa) of New Jersey and Greg Vanzile (Susan) of New Albany; three grandchildren, Dylan and Madison Vanzile of New Albany, and Mason Vanzile of New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Kalinoski Vanzile, and his parents.

In honor of Mr. Vanzile’s service to his country, United Funeral Service will fly the Marine Corps flag during visitation.

BOONEVILLE – Frances Ilene Gaines Taft, 86, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at the Landmark Nursing and Rehab in Booneville. She was born Nov. 1, 1926, to Evan and Annie Williams Gaines. She was a Methodist and a retired secretary.

She is survived by two sisters, Lillian Gaines and Sammie Gaines James, both of Booneville; two brothers, Fred (Jean) Gaines of Booneville and Robert (Mary Ann) Gaines of Lexington, Tenn.; two nieces, Martha Lynn (Chuck) Davis of Tupelo and Emily McWilliams of Lexington, Tenn.; and two nephews, Stan (Jennifer) Gaines of Germantown, Tenn., and Steve (Candi) Gaines of Corinth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest “Bob” Taft; her parents; and two sisters, Edith Gaines and Dena Gaines.

She was a nurse at the Tippah County Hospital, retiring with 26 years of service. She was a member of Peoples Baptist Church.

Duke Sr. She was a member of the Egypt Baptist Church and she was retired from Artex where she was a seamstress.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Aug. 7, at Robinson Funeral Home Chapel in West Point with the Rev. Tony Rooks and the Rev. R.C. Bryan officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Eddie Hamby of Hamilton, Robert Hamby of West Point and Michael Hamby of West Point; one sister, Hazel Camp of West Point; nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, James Hamby, and a brother, A.E. Duke Jr.
