Elisabeth Sinclair
TUPELO – Elisabeth Thurmond Herring Sinclair died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at her home in Tupelo after an extended illness. She was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Gracey, Ky.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Canton. Interment will be in Canton Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home of Louisville is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her son, William L. (Fran) Herring of Tupelo; five stepchildren, Charlie Ray (Stephanie) Sinclair Jr. of Brandon, Kathryn S. (Paul) White of Tupelo, Karon S. (Clint) Barnes of Brandon, Becky S. (Harry) Pepper of Canton and Wanda S. (Will) Tucker of Big Rapids, Mich.; 18 stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren; and special caregivers, Nikki Tyes, Janice Hollis and Shelia Shannon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons; two brothers; and two husbands, Lawrence M. Herring and Dr. Charlie R. Sinclair.
Visitation will be from noon to service time Saturday at the church.

Johnny Simmons
WEST POINT – Johnny Smith Simmons, 64, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Jackson. He was born May 24, 1948, in West Point to Margaret Willis and Smith Doyle Simmons. He worked as a licensed appraiser. He was of the Baptist faith.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel in West Point. The Rev. Melvin Mordecai and his grandsons, John Wesley Williamson and Landon Brackett, will speak for the family. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Calvert Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Williamson (Wes) of West Point and Tonya Brackett (Keith) of Jackson; five grandchildren, John Wesley Williamson, Mallory Williamson, Landon Brackett, Rivers Brackett and Skylar Brackett; two sisters, Jane Hill of Vicksburg and Irene McDonald (Ed) of Pontotoc.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Christopher Adam Brackett.
Pallbearers will be Ben Hill, Lee Hill, Justin Moorman, and his nephews, Larry Willis, Leon Simmons, and Clyde “Baby Doll” Pierce.

Mary Zinn
BRUCE – Mary Ida Zinn, 85, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was a member of Jackson Chapel M.B. Church.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Chapel M.B. Church in Bruce. Pastor Thomas Tillman will officiate. Burial will be at Cane Creek Cemetery in Vardaman. Belle Memorial Funeral Home of Bruce is in charge.
She is survived by sons, Floyd Leon and Ricky Zinn, both of East St. Louis; seven daughters, Louise Welch and Ruthie Love of East St. Louis, Myrtle Brown and Patricia Hogsett of Chicago, Phyllis Zinn, Shirlett Knox and Seleter Thornton, all of Bruce; two sisters, Jessie Bean of East St. Louis and Lorene McIntosh of Bruce; and 38 grandchildren.

Betty Jane Williams
DRY CREEK – Betty Jane Bartlett Williams, 70, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 12, 1942, in Tippah County to Roscoe Mayo Bartlett and Opha Lee Shackelford Bartlett. She was a longtime member of Mt. Hebron Methodist Church. She loved her church and her church family. She was an RN and retired from Northeast Community College after 40 years as an LPN instructor. She also taught the first class of Prentiss County EMTs, as well as being an instructor for First Responders. First Aid and CPR for various volunteer fire departments in Tippah and Prentiss County. She loved God, her family, nursing and all of God’s creations.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn with Bro. Rex Bullock, Bro. Teddy Cornelius and Bro. Jerry Jeter officiating. Burial will be in the Baldwyn Masonic Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Harold Williams of Dry Creek; three daughters, Debbie Massey (Gregg), Tina Bryan (Michael) of Dry Creek and Cynthia Cissom (special friend, Lane Carroll) of Rienzi; eight grandchildren, Justin Robinson (Tabetha), Timothy Robinson (Stefani), Chase Bryan (Chelsea), Jordan Wheatley, Shelby Cissom (special friend, Logan Trull), Katie Bryan, Haley Jane Bryan and Olivia Massey; five great-grandchildren, Summer Blades, Bo Robinson, Jadyn Robinson, Destani Robinson and McKenzie Robinson; one sister, Susan Landers (Mike); several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister and infant child, Johnny Mayo Williams.
Pallbearers will be Red Barkley, Johnny G. Parks, Stevie Hatfield, Randy Hill, Doug Hargett, Hank Chapman and Lavaughn Bullock. Honorary pallbearers will be William Yates and Holland Jumper.

Mary Lois Coleman
BARTAHATCHIE – Mary Lois Coleman, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. She was born Nov. 6, 1928, to Walter Homer Aldridge and Ella Mae Johnson Aldridge in Sulligent, Ala. She retired as line worker after 33 years at United Technologies. She worked at Gulf Ordinance Plant during World War II. She was a member of Sulphur Springs Primitive Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Bro. Bobby Howell officiating. Burial will be in Egger Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsy Coleman Holliday (Tommy) of Columbus; one son, Leslie Coleman (Sandra) of Bartahatchie; six grandchildren, Patty Dill, Damon Coleman, Carrie Hart, Tom Holliday, Stacy Thompson and Jesse Coleman; 11 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Shirley Reeves.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Eugene Coleman; several brothers and sisters.

Laura Ashby
TUPELO – Laura Frances Ashby, 82, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at her residence. She was born Feb. 23, 1930, to Jim and Laura Dilworth. She was a member of Lane Chapel CME Church, where she was a member of the Stewardess Board, youth and senior choirs, and the Josephine Stone Missionary Circle. She was a 1948 graduate of George Washington Carver High School. She was the widow of Augustus Ashby Sr. She was a former employee of Dr. W.A. Zuber, the first black doctor in Tupelo; the Dixie Bell Theater; Professor Davis, the president of Okolona Junior College; and Judge Claude Clayton, She and her husband were the owners and operators of Ashby’s Cash Grocery Store in the Park Hill community for 23 years, from which she retired. She later kept children in her home for family members and friends in the community. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She was a former member of the Magnolia Social Club and Kissia Clifton Temple 671.

She is survived by her children and caregivers, Kaye Frances Ashby Gary and Shelia Marie Ashby Shumpert, both of Tupelo, Augustus “Sonny” (Sandra) Ashby of Humble, Texas, and Donald Lewis Ashby of Tupelo; one stepdaughter, Mary Lois Ashby Carruth; a grandchild, Sonia Marie Ashby was reared in their home in Woodbridge, Va.; one sister, Annie Dilworth Richardson of Tupelo; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo (Sam) Bell of Tupelo; a special cousin, Dorothy Jean Freeman of Arlington, Texas; eight grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Alice Patricia Ashby; five brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the J.W. Porter’s Chapel. Viewing will be at the church on Saturday one hour prior to service.

Yvonne Rupert
ST. JAMES, Mo. – Georgia Yvonne Rupert, 76, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at her home. She was born on June 26, 1936, in St. James, Mo., to George and Agnes Wisdom Lewis. She was united in marriage to Robert Rupert on Aug. 23, 1952. They had four children. She was a stay-at-home mom, raising her family and taking care of the household, which she did with pride. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend whose greatest enjoyment was spending time with family. She attended the First Baptist Church of St. James. She loved reading and shopping with her sisters. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her children, Daniel Rupert (Carol) of Tupelo, James Wade Rupert (Lisa) of Independence, Mo., Ralph E. “Jack” Rupert, of St. James, Mo., Anita Kivette of St. James, Mo.; grandchildren, J.R., Kelley and Cameron Rupert, Joshua Rupert, Amanda Frazier and Elizabeth Howard; great-grandchildren, Katie and Hunter Wiggins, Adam Nabb, Jonathan Howard and Clayton Rupert; sister, Alma Lee Adams of St. James, Mo.; a host of nieces and nephews; and her caregiver, Leigh Barnett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robertm in 1995; and sisters, Frieda Lewis, Alta Gunter and Shirley Miller.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the St. James Chapel of the James & Gahr Mortuary with the Rev. Dan Rupert and the Rev. Jerry Baumann officiating. Interment will be in the Newburg Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Joshua Rupert, Cameron Rupert, Richard Miller Jr., Lee Roy Wells, Nathan Howard and Paul Harvison.

Agnes Tipton
AUBURN – Agnes Mae Tipton, 82, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born in Friars Point on May 16, 1930, to James Cecil and Mary Katherine McCullum Bass. On April 26, 1968, she married Robert R. Tipton in Greenville and for the past 30 years lived in the Auburn community. She was a homemaker and loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Her hobbies included cooking, sewing and fishing. She was a member of Hughes Chapel Baptist Church.
Services will be at noon Saturday at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. John Stevens and the Rev. Brenda G. Harrison officiating. Graveside services will follow in Valley Grove Cemetery with Rev. Chris Stacks officiating.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, Robert R. Tipton of the Auburn community; four daughters, Velma J. West of Tupelo, Brenda G. Harrison (Richard) of Klamath Falls, Ore., Barbara S. McMillen of Auburn and Sherry A. Wright (James Wright Jr.) of Auburn; one brother, James E. Bass (Dorothy) of Auburn; six sisters, Lea Voyles of Pontotoc, Lottie B. Norman of Auburn, Betty S. Bass of Auburn, Joyce Seroggins (Wayne) of Pontotoc, Jeanette Stacks (Forrest) of Saltillo and Glenda J. Karr (Loyd) of Orangeburg, Fla.; 22 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, James Robert Hester and Eddie A. Hester; two brothers, Rev. Ottis Bass and Bayward Bass; her first husband and father of her children, Holly S. Hester.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – America Elizabeth Brown Bowen died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at Sunnington Senior Care in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Pontotoc to James Willis Brown and Agnes Carrie Brown. She was married to John H. Bowen. She was a graduate of Pontotoc High School and Blue Mountain College and taught high school English and business. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Pontotoc and was attending the First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She enjoyed reading, gardening, spending time with her family, the Pontotoc County Jail Ministry and sharing the Christian message with others.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Pontotoc with the Rev. Ken Hester officiating. Burial will follow in the Pontotoc Memorial Gardens. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Lucy Bowen Langworthy (Warren) of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; a son, John Michael Bowen of Ft. Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Megan Langworthy Martin, Lara Langworthy and John Ross Langworthy; and many nieces and nephews.

Emogene Pettigrew
TUPELO – Emogene Scruggs Pettigrew, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after an extended illness. She was born in Shannon on Sept. 21, 1928, to Major Scruggs and Eva Victoria Lindley Scruggs. A lifelong Lee Countian, she worked many years for Milam Manufacturing and McGraw Edison. She spent most of her life as a master homemaker, thoroughly enjoying reading, crossword and word search puzzles, and collecting glassware, especially Depression china. A lover of all things political, she took great pleasure in having phone conversations with her family and friends. She attended Priceville Baptist Church.
A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Tim McMillen officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time Saturday at the Tupelo Chapel.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, George Pettigrew, whom she married on Feb. 11, 1949; her daughter, Vicky Pettigrew Crocker (Jerry) of Tupelo; her grandchild, Nicole Crocker Hightower (Dwayne) of Tupelo; two great-grandchildren, John Curtis and Luke Connor Hightower; her sister, Kathleen Conaway (Howard) of Meridian; her sisters-in-law, Dora Scruggs Turner (Daryl) and Gertrude Scruggs, all of Tupelo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Horial, Luther “Dud,” Daniel, Lucian, Genny Lee and Geneva Scruggs Mears.

ECRU – Bobby Lee “Sparky” Sparks Sr., 66, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at North Misissippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was an employee of Northeast Coca-Cola and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. A loving father and husband, he will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Sparks; one brother, Winfred Sparks; three sisters, Birdie Ross, Fay Smith and Ruby Maples; three sons, Michael Sparks, Tommy Sparks and Bob Sparks; two daughters, Donna Murrey and Cindy Hardin; one stepdaughter, Ginger Fryar; and 14 grandchildren.

PITTSBORO – Dolores Jean Earhart, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. She was born Dec. 29, 1928, in Athens, Ga. She was a retired sales clerk for K-Mart and a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce with Bro. Scotty Bland and Dr. Buford Usry officiating. Burial will be in Pittsboro Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Easley (Fred) Bullard of Pittsboro; one son, Randy (Ginger) Easley of Chickamauga, Ga.; one stepson, Van (Carolyn) Earhart of Ringo, Ga.; one sister, Pamela Evans of Harrison, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Gary (Jeri) Bullard, Freddy (Sarah) Bullard, Cheryl (Kevin) McCurdy, Michael (Monica) Easley and Scott (Brandy) Easley; 12 great-grandchildren.

PONTOTOC – Mary Kathryn Ivy Easterling, 91, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at her home. She was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Calhoun County to James Thomas and Elier Pearl Houpt Ivy. She married Virgil Byron Easterling on May 18, 1941. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Pontotoc.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Browning Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Corley officiating. Burial will follow in the Pontotoc Memorial Gardens. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

TUPELO – Dennis Owen, 79, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

Charles McKeown
GUNTOWN – Charles Gene McKeown, 64, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was a professional musician. He enjoyed recording music, talking on CB’s, electronics, fishing and boating.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Johnny Hamblin officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
He is survived by his mother, Eleanor McKeown of New Albany; two daughters, Sandra Cox (Chris) of Baldwyn and Gina Sevilla (Rob) of Tupelo; sister-in-law, Kathy McKeown of Corinth; five grandchildren, Cayson McKeown, Cayden Cox, Leah Sevilla, Dylan Sevilla and Caleb Sevilla; great-grandson, Sean David McKeown.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Earnest McKeown; a brother, Danny McKeown; and a grandchild, Ethan Hayes Sevilla.

Carris Crocker
CALHOUN CITY – Carris Logan Crocker, 96, died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2012, at Calhoun Health Services. She was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Calhoun County. She was a retired sewing machine operator for Glenn Slacks and a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City. The Rev. Jimmy Vance will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Bruce.
Survivors include one daughter, Wyvona Crutchfield of Calhoun City; one sister, Maeford Winter of West Point; one brother, Harold Denzil Logan of Troy, Ill.; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren C. Logan and Bessie C. Sartin Logan; her husband, Howard Crocker; and a son, Jack Crocker.
Pallbearers will be Jay Vanlandingham, Steven Box, Jonathan Denley, Jerry Vance and David Crocker.
