RIPLEY – Obie Gunn, 93, died Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Ripley. He was born Oct. 7, 1916. He was retired. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a deacon at Ripley Second Baptist Church and a member of Masonic Lodge Palestine 107.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Second Baptist M.B. Church in Ripley. The Rev. Willie Payne will officiate. Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery. Foster & Son Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Nannie Gunn of Ripley; three daughters, Mary (Edward) Johnson of Peoria, Ill., Darlene (Derryl) Blige of Covington, Ga., and Louise (John Wyatt) Carter of Ripley; one son, Troy Evans of Peoria, Ill.; three brothers, Nathaniel (Toccia) Gunn, B.G. Gunn and Earl (Viola) Gunn, all of Memphis; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at noon today at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service time Saturday.

ASHLAND – Isaiah Thomas Vongphachanh, newborn, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2009 at Baptist Women’s Hospital in Memphis. He was born Dec. 29, 2009, to Philip and Stephanie King Vongphachanh of Ashland.
Graveside services will be at noon today at Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Scott Brady officiating. Ripley Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents; one sister, Kaylee Turner of the home; one brother, David Vongphachanh of the home; his grandparents, Jimmy and Bonnie King of Ashland, and Tom and Diana Slaughter of Memphis; his great-grandparents, Tate and Shirley King of Ashland, Josephine Thornton, Linda Sims and Tommy Slaughter, all all of Memphis.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, the Rev. Thomas Thornton.

VARDAMAN – Mattie Christine Card Goines, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born Sept. 29, 1926, in Webster County to Tom Card and Dellie Ann Flemings Card. She was a homemaker and a member of Steward Chapel Baptist Church, which has since burned. She unable to attend church in later years because of physical disabilities. She loved to watch the Rev. Billy Graham on television and listen to gospel music.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Houston Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Earl Alexander and Bro. Derek Finley officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Eupora.

ECRU – Etoyle Shettles, 99, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Graceland Care Center in Pontotoc. She was born Nov. 29, 1910, to Walter and Verna Robbins. She was a lifelong resident of Pontotoc County, living most of her life in Ecru. She was the eldest member of Ecru Baptist Church and very active her whole life until her health failed. She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, spending time with her family and loving the Lord.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Ecru with the Rev. Buster Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Ecru Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Ecru is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her sons, Billy Shettles and Bobby Shettles, both of Ecru; her daughters, Sandra (Tommy) McClure of Ingomar and Dottie (Steve) Cobb of Ecru; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Margie Heard of Ecru.

BOONEVILLE – Jewel Mae Robinson, 88, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at Tippah County Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 26, 1921, in Itawamba County to John and Annie Grammer Plaxico. She was a housewife and a member of County Line Baptist Church. She enjoyed listening to gospel music and the Bible on tape.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the County Line Baptist Church in the Dry Creek community with Bro. William Copeland officiating and Bro. Jimmy Newby assisting. Burial will be in the County Line Cemetery. McMillan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Robinson of Jumpertown; three sons, James Robinson of Booneville, Leonard Robinson of Jumpertown and Clovis Robinson of Rienzi; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 45 years, Lonzo Robinson; one son, Van Donald “Duck” Robinson; one grandchild, Allie Marie Robinson; one great-grandchild, Justin Lynn Wennett.

BOONEVILLE – Mary Anne Ward, 77, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Booneville, where she was a Sunday school teacher for the Upper Room Sunday School class, a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women and served on various committees in the church. She was a retired school teacher after 27 years of teaching in the Mississippi School System.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the First United Methodist Church with Bro. Phillip Box officiating. Burial will be in the Booneville Cemetery.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Coach William B. Ward Sr.; one daughter, Jimmie Ellen (Gigi) Brumley and husband, Charles, of Corinth; two sons, Bill Ward Jr. and wife, Paula, and John Andy Ward and wife, Rebecca, all of Booneville; seven grandchildren, Ashley Brumley, Patrick Brumley, Emily Ward Johnson and husband, Brian, Trey Ward, Trent Ward, Anna Kathryn Ward and Jay Ward; and two great-grandchildren, Ward Johnson and Cailyn Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Lawrence Gullett Sr. and Mary Barbara Fugitt; and two brothers, James Lee Gullett and William L. Gullett Jr.
