Jerry Taylor
SALTILLO – Jerry F. Taylor, 64, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born June 13, 1948, in Corinth to Merle “Red” Taylor and Martha Jean Ellis Taylor. He spent most of childhood traveling with his dad who was a legend in Blue Grass music. He enjoyed spending time with his dad at the Grand Ole Opry making memories with music legends such as Bill Monroe, George Jones, Hank Williams, Ferlin Husky, Elvis Presley, Gordon Terry, Ray Price and many other great music legends. Jerry volunteered to serve in the Army at the young age of 17 . He completed boot camp and infantry training school at Ft. Benning, Ga., in 1966 and then went on to proudly fight for his country in the Vietnam War from 1967-1969. When Jerry returned from his service he joined the Tupelo Police Dept., where he was a patrolman, detective and a sketch artist, and he also worked for the Lee County Sheriff’s Department. Jerry had a passion for yard work and cooking. Jerry was a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association, Chapter 847, where he served as a veterans service officer. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His life revolved around his grandkids, Cade and Olivia. He will be missed dearly but never forgotten.
Services with military honors will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors with Bro. Tim Green officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Taylor of Saltillo; two daughters, Angie Taylor Bates and Misty Taylor, both of Saltillo; two grandchildren, Cade Taylor and Olivia Rutledge, both of Saltillo; two brothers, Tracy Taylor (Patricia) of Tupelo and Dale Taylor (Brandy) of Saltillo; three sisters, Darlene Huntington (Les) of New Albany, Robin Taylor Wages of Birmingham, Ala., and Gina Taylor Tyra of San Antonio, Texas; a special cousin, Jack McCormick (Janet) of Atlanta, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merle “Red” Taylor and Martha Jean Taylor; his grandparents; a special aunt, Bobbie Sue McCormick.
Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 1, 2013, at the Saltillo Funeral Home and two hours prior to services Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be Jack McCormick, Tracy Taylor, Davy Estes, Richard Hill, Cade Taylor, Rick Wages, Jimmy White, Casey White and W.K. Webb.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Vietnam Veterans Association, Chapter 842.

David L. Bishop
BALDWYN – David L. Bishop 65, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at his home after a long illness. He was born April 21, 1948. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, shooting pool and making people laugh. He attended Trinity Bible Believing Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Bible Believing Church with Bro. William Copeland and Bro. John W. Bridges officiating. Burial will be in Baldwyn Masonic Cemetery. Waters Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Roxie Bishop of Baldwyn; daughter, Amanda Burns (Mike) of Baldwyn; two grandchildren, Kayla and Josh Burns of Baldwyn; two sisters, Pat Grissom of Baldwyn and Shirley Harrison (Troy) of Dry Creek; one nephew; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleatus and Opal Bishop; sister, Barbara McNutt; brother, Ronnie Bruce Bishop; three nephews and one niece.
Pallbearers will be Verne Baldwin, Michael Burns, Shane Baldwin, Troy Harrison, T.J. Copeland and Robbie Copeland.

Ethelene Winston
NEW ALBANY – Ethelene “Ma Pudin’” Winston, 69, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at her home. She was born Sept. 2, 1943, in New Albany to Ulysses and Jessie Love Folsom.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary United Methodist Church in New Albany with the Rev. W.T. Mayfield officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her son, Rafael (Camille) Winston of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Dorothy F. Gray of South Holland, Ill., and Joan F. Reed of Chicago; and four grandchildren, Rafael II, Camerre and Cameron Winston of Nashville, and Jordon Winston of Ocean Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Walter C. Folsom; and a special friend and cousin, Virginia Nesbit.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

William Townsend
MANTACHIE – William Henry “Bill” Townsend, 51, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born March 23, 1961, in San Diego, Calif., to Frank H. Townsend and Elsie Carroll Townsend. He served in the U.S. Marines during peace time and worked as a truck driver during his younger years. He married Carolyn Turner on April 22, 1989. Before becoming disabled, he worked as a carpenter.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Maple Springs Baptist Church in Mantachie with Bro. Jerry Dunaway officiating. Holland Funeral Directors is entrusted with arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Townsend of Mantachie; his father, Frank Henry Townsend of Georgetown, Texas; his stepfather, Gerald McGath (Ruby) of Skyline; daughter, Brittany Nicole McClarty (Josh) of Mantachie, stepdaughter, Rita Ledlow Navetta of Pontotoc; stepson, Terry Ledlow (Stephanie) of Mantachie; stepbrother, Mike McGath (Nina) of Jamesville, Wis.; sister, Myra Duckworth (Terry) of Saltillo; stepsister, Terri McGath of Osbourne, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and a stepsister, Sherry Hathaway.

Ruth Jones
IUKA – Ruth Barbara Ella Shaw Jones, 96 died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Iuka. She was born in McComb on July 23, 1916. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Tupelo. She was a business owner and homemaker, and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Iuka United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Curtis officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by three daughters, Beverly Jourdan (Gene) of Iuka, Barbara Livingston (Roland) of Lafayette, La., and Jo Ann Harrington (Bill) of Iuka; eight grandchildren, Raymond Jourdan (Cindy) of Tupelo, Babs Jourdan Hall (Mike) of Arab, Ala., Len Palumbo (Leslie) of Avondale Estates, Ga., Stacy Palumbo Stehlar (Danny) of Atlanta, Ga., Craig Livingston (Sarah) of Baton Rouge, La., Colin Livingston and Chris Livingston (Heather), both of Hollywood, Calif., and Brian Harrington (Brandi) of Suwanee, Ga.; and 11 great grandchildren, Barbara Jane Hall, John Hall, Katherine Jourdan, Jay Jourdan, Abigail Livingston, Leanne Livingston, Ellen Livingston, Molly Palumbo, Charlie Palumbo, Autumn Harrington and Hayden Harrington.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Joseph Bailey Jones; two brothers; and three sisters.
Pallbearers will be Raymond Jourdan, Mike Hall, John Hall, Craig Livingston, Lin Palumbo, Danny Stehlar, Brian Harrington, Luke Ellenbury and Jay Jourdan.

JoAnn Bennett
OXFORD – JoAnn Evans Bennett, 76, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at her home in Oxford. Born in Oxford, she was a charter member of North Oxford Baptist Church but was most recently a member of First Baptist Church of Abbeville. She was a retired bookkeeper for Otasco. She was the widow of Edward Bennett. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, reading and embroidery.
Services will be at noon Wednesday in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Hope officiating. Burial will follow in Abbeville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon Wednesday at the funeral home.
Survivors include three daughters, Linda Pritchard (Gary), Pam Frierson (Robert) and Peggy Lepard (Jimmy), all of Oxford; one son, Donnie Bennett (Carla) of Oxford; two sisters, Mary Beard and Nita Beard of Oxford; one brother, Wayne Evans of Oxford; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Donna Tharpe
BRUCE – Donna Elaine Tharpe, 46, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at her home. She was born Feb. 17, 1966, in Bruce. She was a member of Concord Baptist Church.
The body will be cremated. Pryor Funeral Home of Calhoun City is in charge.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony Jenkins and Gabriel McClure, both of Bruce; one brother, Clay Jenkins of Bruce.

VARDAMAN – Daniel Aven “Dan” Hendrix, 58, went to his Heavenly Home on Dec. 29, 2012. He was born April 16, 1954, in Calhoun City, the son of Charles Paul and Agnes Gulledge Hendrix. He was a member of Reedy’s Chapel Baptist Church in Calhoun City. He was a 31-year National Guard veteran, an avid outdoorsman, deer hunter, loved Ole Miss football and serving his country.
Services with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. today at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City with Bro. Chris Duncan and Bro. Gladwin Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in Reedy’s Chapel Cemetery in Calhoun City. Pryor Funeral Home of Calhoun City is in charge of arrangements.

Perry Taylor
NEW ALBANY – Perry James Taylor, 65, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at his home. He was born July 22, 1947, in Union County to Carl Taylor and Marie Roberson Taylor. He was a retired furniture salesman.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel in New Albany. Burial will be in Glenfield Cemetery at New Albany. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include a sister, Brenda Taylor Fuller; a son, Jim (Enola) Taylor; and three stepchildren, Terri Yielding, Tonya Young and Danny Young.

Charlie Gilley
TUPELO – Charlie McKinley Gilley, 86, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born in Prentiss County on May 30, 1926, to Baxter and Myrtle Richey Gilley. He lived much of his life in Prentiss County, where he was owner/operator of Gilley’s Barber Shop in Booneville for more than 50 years. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Tupelo and the Senior Adult Sunday School class. He was a U.S. Army veteran with service during World War II.
Services were Monday, Dec. 31, at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Rick Brooks officiating. Private burial was in the Booneville City Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Peggy Brewer Gilley, whom he married Dec. 14, 1945; children, Richard Gilley and Wanda Gilley Armstrong, both of Tupelo; three grandchildren, Carrie Killebrew Coggins (John), Jennifer Gilley Cole (Michael) and Scotta Gilley Allen (Paul); five great-grandchildren, Benjamin Shurden (Mandolyn), Lennon Cole, Chandler Coggins, McKinly Cole and Elliot Allen; one great-great-grandchild, Kinsley Shurden; and his sister, Geraldine Champion of Booneville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and two sisters.

George Coutoumanos
FULTON – George Albert Coutoumanos, 84, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born July 8, 1928, in Mellia, Spain, to Moes Chocoron and Estria Sol Sanaes Coutoumanos. He was a Merchant Marine from 1942-1945. In 1948 the ship he was aboard came to Mobile, Ala. From there he made his way to Tupelo where he worked for Mikes Restaurant and met his wife, the late Etoyle Coutoumanos. Later he worked in the insurance and restaurant businesses. He was a member of Crestway Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Dr. David Eldridge officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

BATESVILLE – Laura Virginia Medlin Collier, 92, formerly of Ripley, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Batesville. She was born on Nov. 15, 1920, to Thomas Eugene and Ethel Mae Hansford Medlin in Tippah County. She and her husband owned and operated Collier’s Sportswear in Ripley. She was a faithful member of Springdale Baptist Church.
