Ogie Logan
NETTLETON – Ogie “Big O” Logan, 58, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Aug. 8, 1954, in Plantersville to Huey C. and Mary Pounds Logan. He was a lifelong member of New Chapel United Methodist Church. He enjoyed working on cars and spending time with family and friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Glenn Parks officiating. Burial will be in Jerusalem Cemetery. N.L. Jones Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by two daughters, Twana Hill of Tupelo and Raven Logan of Wren; two sisters, Diann Logan and Ophelean Pounds of Nettleton; four brothers. James and Johnny Logan of Nettleton, Emmitt (Glenda) Logan of Plantersville and Purtie (Tonia) Logan of Shannon; two special friends, Mickey Jones; friend and caregiver, Jimmy Rhodes; and two nieces.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Valeria Grayson
TUPELO – Valeria Porter Grayson, 83, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was the owner and manager of the family business, Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary. She was born April 26, 1926, in Tupelo, the only child of J.W. and Sadie Mayes Porter. She was a lifelong member of Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she was once active in many organizations. She was a graduate of George Washington Carver High School Class of 1947 and a graduate of National Business Coilege in Nashville, Tenn. She did further study at Atlanta University, North Carolina Central, Fisk University and Lane College.
Her professional, civic, fraternal and Christian affiliations and involvement include a lifetime member of the Mississippi State Funeral Directors and Morticians Association and a member of the District Funeral Directors and Morticians Association. She was involved with the Eastern Star, Heroines of Jericho, State Association of Elks, Kissia Clifton Temple 671 where she served as trustee and Daughter Ruler, and the NAACP. She received many awards and served in many capacities.
A life celebration service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Long Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery after the service. Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary of Tupelo and Grayson Funeral Service of Corinth are in charge.
She is survived by her children, Mattie Ann (Milton) Dyer of Springfield, Mich., Harry L. (Dorothy) Grayson Jr. of Tupelo, Roy (Katherine) Grayson of Los Angeles, Calif., Sarita Witherspoon and Jacque Grayson of Tupelo, Charles (Maribel) Grayson of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Roy (Delores) LaGrone of Tupelo; one brother-in-law, Robert Grayson of Los Angeles; one sister-in-law, Darletha F. Grayson of Tupelo; 28 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry L. Grayson Sr.; one son, Frederick Porter Grayson; and one daughter, Althea Grayson Banks.
Viewing will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the J.W. Porter’s Chapel. Family/friends hour will be at the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Mary Ann Chism
HATLEY – Mary Ann Chism, 48, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born July 27, 1964, in Amory to Louise Phillips Cox and the late Joe Cox Jr. She married Tim Chism in 2011. She attended Amory Schools. She was a manager at the Best Western Hotel in Aberdeen for several years. She was of the Baptist faith. A very devoted woman to her family, she enjoyed spending time with her husband and shopping with her two daughters. Having a great personality, she worked at Pickles Handi-Mart in Hatley, where she made many treasured friends. She enjoyed crafting, decorating, taking pictures and shopping.
She is survived by her husband, Tim Chism of Hatley; her mother, Louise Phillips Cox of Hatley; daughters, Courtney and Bri Oliver, both of Hatley; son, Chandler Chism of Hatley; brothers, Wayne Cox (Sharon) of Jackson, David Cox of Tupelo, Mike Cox of Smithville, Ricky Cox of Florida and Donald Cox of Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Molly and Chester Cox, and Ed and Mary Mathis.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace Fellowship Baptist Church on Smithville Road with Bro. Chip Harmon officiating. Burial will follow at Hatley Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be John Phillips, Tony Phillips, Sam Jones, Andy Terri, Jeremy Dillman and Gray Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Josh Raymond, Devan Hurley, Ricky Willhite and Michael Cox.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until the service hour Saturday.

Russell Peterson
WALNUT – Russell Lee Peterson, 52, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Tippah County Hospital in Ripley. He was born Aug. 28, 1960, in Tippah County to Garon and Lillie Peterson. He was a member of Macedonia M.B. Church in Walnut. He was an employee of Ashley Furniture in Ripley. He enjoyed fishing and playing softball and baseball. But his favorite hobby was meeting new people. He was truly a people person who never met a stranger.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Walnut High School Gym. Burial will be in Ball Hill Cemetery in Tiplersville. Foster and Son Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include five sisters, Elizabeth (Carl) Johnson, Patsy (Tracy) Luster, Linda (R.L.) Luster, all of Tiplersville, Kathy (Earl) Cox and Jo Ann Jeanes of Ripley; seven uncles, Marion Luster and Ted (Charlene) Luster of Walnut, James (Cassie) Luster of Flint, Mich., John (Betty) Luster of Hernando, R.C. Peterson of Cleveland, Ohio, O.C. (Nodie) Peterson and Jerry Paterson of Tiplersville; two aunts, Mamie Johnson and Eloise Johnson of Falkner; one goddaughter; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will lie in repose at the gym one hour prior to service time.

John Carter
RIPLEY – John W. “Tit” Carter, 79, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Health Center. He was born July 19, 1933, to Teddy Roosevelt Carter and Wysie Godwin Carter. He married Helen Louise Rutherford on Aug. 31, 1961. He was a longtime member of Ripley Second Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for 39 years. He worked 39 years at American Biltrite.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist M.B. Church at Ripley with Pastor Willie Paine officiating. Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery. Foster and Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen C. Palmer of Ripley; one granddaughter, Brittany Dion Cox of Ripley; two brothers, Roosevelt Carter Jr. of Gary, Ind., and William Albert Carter of Pontotoc; niece, Starlette (William) Vance of Ripley; nephew, Paul (Deony) Ratliff Jr. of Arkansas; two great-nieces, Freda (Marc) Braddock of Ripley and Tracey Barnett of Arlington, Texas; a great-great-nephew, Jay Braddock; cousins, Hazel Foster Christmas and Allen Christmas of Ripley; Jerry O’Neal Cox and Latigra McDonald; and three special friends, Pastor Terry Smith, Bro. Jermaine “BoBo” Jackson and Bro. Jackie McKensize.

CORINTH – Ruth Richardson Anderson, 71, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at her home..

BOONEVILLE – Paxton Zane Lee Knight, infant, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth. He was born Jan. 23, 2013, to Michael and Chelsea Knight.

Survivors are his parents; one brother, Raden Lane Knight; his grandparents, Garry Raden, Carolyn (Greg) Carpenter and Eddie Knight; his great-grandparents, Mildred McKissack, Lloyd Knight, Sue Crafton and Jimmy Ridge; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dr. Richard Barnes
OXFORD – Dr. Richard Lee Barnes, 58, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, in Conway County, Ark. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a professor of law at the University of Mississippi. He was selected “Outstanding Professor of the Year” in 2006-07 and received the ”Faculty of the Year” award in 2007-08.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Oxford-University United Methodist Church with the Rev. Warren Black and the Rev. Claire Dobbs officiating. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. today at Waller Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Alexandra Dornan Barnes; a brother, Robert Barnes; and his father, Hoyt Barnes.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Dornan Barnes of Oxford; two daughters, Emily Anne Barnes Williams (Matthew) of Washington D.C. and Molly Kathleen Barnes of Oxford; one son, Robert Clayton Barnes of Albany, N.Y.; his mother, Marie Turner Chester of Mt. RIPLEY – F.L. “Spud” Rowell, 75, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Sept. 24, 1937, to Charles Lyman Rowell and Mary Louise Lockhart Rowell. He was a member of Peoples Baptist Church. He was a self-employed farmer and businessman for 55 years. He also served as county supervisor for the 5th District for 20 years. He graduated from Centre High School.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Randy Isbell and Bro. Jeff Adams officiating. Burial will be in the Peoples Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Billie Childs Rowell of Ripley; four daughters, Juanita Rowell Isbell (Randy) of Columbia Tenn., Sherri Rowell of Ripley, Carol Rowell Harding (Bill) of High Point, N.C., and Kim Rowell Peeler (Charlie Barnett) of Ripley; two sons, Carl Rowell of Ripley and Craig Rowell (Stephanie) of Ripley; two sisters, Gara Childs (Charles) of Ripley and Lynda Wright (Robert) of West Memphis, Ark.; 10 grandchildren,Courtney Isbell Goolsby (Jason) of Jackson, Tenn., Dan Isbell of Columbia, Tenn., Kristin Peeler Collier (Cole) of Jackson, Reid Isbell of Nashville, Tenn., Kayla Peeler of Ripley, Lindsey Isbell of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Caleb Rowell of Ripley, Caroline Harding of High Point, N.C., Logan Rowell and Savannah Clemmer, both of Ripley; and one great-grandchild, Graham Goolsby of Jackson, Tenn.

Ruth Turner
BLUE SPRINGS – Mamie Ruth Turner, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Baldwyn Nursing Home. She was born May 31, 1924, in Union County to Henry Fred Turner and Willie Stacks Turner. She was a retired factory worker for Irvin B. Schwabe. She loved working in her yard and garden. She was a member of the Ellistown Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Sammy Coker and the Rev. Mile Powell officiating. Burial will be in Ellistown Cemetery. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her sister, Beatrice Duggar of Blue Springs; four nieces, Judy Gilmore of Verona, Jane Coker of Baldwyn, Jill Whitten of Blue Springs and Jeania Adair of Tupelo; a nephew, Terry Duggar of Blue Springs; nine great-nieces and great-nephews; and 13 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Ora Lee Turner; and a brother, William Houston Turner.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Gilmore, Paul Coker, Jeremy Easterling, Ben Duggar, Will Duggar and Justin Adair.

Kenneth Johnston
MEMPHIS – Kenneth C. Johnston, 45, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, after a long illness. He was the son of Janice Johnston and the late Gerald Johnston. He was a graduate of Kirby High School and was near graduation from Memphis State University, when he became ill in 1991. He loved sports, especially the Miami Dolphins, reading and being with family and friends.
He is survived by his mother, Janice Johnston of Memphis; one brother, Keith Johnston of Memphis; his aunts and uncles, Donna and Harry Paulk, Judy and Jim Joest, Ronnie and Mary Johnston; and cousins Kelly Paulk, Brian Paulk, Laurie Winston, Steve Joest and Mike Joest.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Wayne Johnston; his grandparents, Lynette and Archie Atkins, and Martha and Rufus Johnston.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors. A graveside service will follow visitation at Oak Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Sam Yarbrough officiating.

Louise Sharp
SHANNON – Mable Louise Sharp, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a short illness. A native and lifelong resident of Shannon, she was born Aug. 22, 1923, to Ben and Ada Christopher. She loved cooking for her family, taking care of the elderly and her grandson. She was Pentecostal by faith.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Ben Raper officiating. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Jimmy Brown, Robin, Laura, Billy, Bobby and Christopher Byrd, Terry Brown, Tammy Bryant and a host of others; one sister, Myrtle Barnett; one brother, Johnny Taylor Christopher; one sister-in-law, Peggy Byrd; many great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Sharp; five children, Daniel Byrd, Betty Rogers, Robert Byrd, Barbara Gray and Billy Byrd Sr.; and three grandchildren.

Frank Schrodi Jr.
FULTON – Frank Blaze Schrodi Jr., 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born Oct. 27, 1944, in Ohio to Frank B. Schrodi Sr. and Dorothy McCrossin Schrodi. He lived in Dayton, Ohio, before moving to Fulton almost three years ago. He was a plastic mold operator for Encon before retiring. He was an advocate for Union Steward in the credit union for Teamsters Local 957 of Dayton, Ohio. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of Itawamba Christian Church. He was an avid golfer and he loved his dog, Lady, and his cat, Callie.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Itawamba Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Wismer officiating. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline M. Hester Massengill
HICKORY FLAT – Hester Janes Massengill died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Graceland Care Center in New Albany. She was born Nov. 25, 1925, to Bryan and Betty Huddleston Janes. She was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. She was a retired supervisor for Genesco Shoe Company in Ripley.
She is survived by her sons, Ollice Massengill Jr. and Belinda, and Alan Massengill and Jennifer of Hickory Flat; her grandchildren, Steven Massengill and Dina, Kevin Massengill and Melanie, Karen Churchill and Ricky, Allison Gordon and Ronnie, Jamie Bryant and Jason, and Gavin Murray; great-grandchildren, Quinn, Collin, Kyle and Will Massengill, Presley and Olivia Pannell, Abby and Zane Churchill, Hannah, Callie, Lane and Laken Gordon, and Max and Jordan Bryant; and her sister, Thelma Hopkins of Jackson, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Ollice Massengill Sr.; her parents; brothers, Elbert Roy, Billy Wayne and Ronald Janes; and her sister, Margia Glover.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Flat Rock Baptist Church in Hickory Flat with the Rev. Gary Yates and the Rev. Bobby Butler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Steve Massengill, Kevin Massengill, Ricky Churchill, Ronnie Gordon, Jason Bryant and Scott Massengill.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the church.

Annie Stith
SHANNON – Annie Bell Miller Stith, 100, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born March 18, 1912, in Monroe County to Edward Miller and Estelle Crump-Miller. She was a lifelong member of New Prospect Church. She grew up in a loving household and was led to Christ at an early age, a seed which would harvest and bear fruit throughout her entire life.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Grove M.B. Church in Shannon. The Rev. George Kendrick will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. N.L. Jones Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her child, Andre Stith (Beverly); grandchildren, Michael Stith and Ester, Jasmine and Jennifer Cervantes, Andretta and Kelly Kaleto, and Ebony Stith; one great-grandchild, Symone Coleman; nieces, Janice Haney and Annie D. Cobb; nieces by marriage, Roberta Ann Davis, Jimmie Bynum, Callie Ruth Bailey and Doris O’Neal; nephew, James Edward Miller; cousins, Tom and Jimmie Nell Pierce and Charles Miller; friends, Eloise Shumpert, Pearlie Blackmon, Teresa, Ken and Alivia Roberts, Joe Willie Green, James Oscar Trice; the Fields family; and great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Ruby Williams
TUPELO – Ruby Jean Reed Williams, 54, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born Sept. 3, 1958, to Willie Reed and Mary Stanfield Reed. She received her education from the Shannon schools and she graduated from South Pontotoc High School. She worked in retail jewelry sales for McRae’s and managed Freeman Jewelry. She was a basketball player and choir leader. She loved laughter and, when younger, chasing her younger siblings with snakes.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Mt. Calvary Outreach Ministry in Okolona. Minister Dan Collins III will officiate. Williams Memorial of Okolona is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Sherria Collins (Ben) of Tupelo and Tiffany Floyd (Desmond) of Warwick, R.I.; one son, Nathan Williams (LaKrystal) of Tupelo; three sisters, Mary Mosly of New Albany, Barbara Reed of Tupelo and Mildred MaGee (Thomas) of Pontotoc; six brothers, Wendell Stanfield of Detroit, Mich., Marvin Reed, Melvin Reed, Jerry Reed (Kim) and Tony Reed, all of Tupelo, and Steve Reed (Valerie) of Irvin, Texas; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by hia parents; two brothers, Willie Reed and Wendell Reed.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today.

Myrtle Piefer
WALNUT – Myrtle Lavern Garrett Tomlinson Piefer, 93, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Tippah County Hospital in Ripley. She was born Sept. 24, 2013, to Walter and Beulah Jones Garrett in Tippah County. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley with Bro. Jamie Garrett and Bro. Kenneth Drewery officiating. Burial will be in Overton Hill Church Cemetery in Walnut.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Lanphere (Prentice) of Saltillo and Geraldine Stokes (Larry) of Collierville, Tenn.; three sons, Charles Tomlinson (Majell), Butch Tomlinson (Bonnie) and James Tomlinson (Betty), all of Walnut; one daughter-in-law, Doris Garrett of Iuka; one sister-in-law, Jan Regan of Florida; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was prececed in death by her first husband, Mansel Tomlinson; her second husband, Frank Piefer; her parents; one son, J.L. Garrett; one sister, Pearl Bridges; four brothers, Rubel, Eugene, Odell and Fred Tomlinson; and a half brother, Roy Joe Regan.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
