Dorothy Mize
OXFORD – Dorothy Mize, 90, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Mrs. Mize was the widow of W.O. Mize Jr. She was a graduate of Toccopola High School and attended the University of Mississippi with a major in accounting. She was a retired bookkeeper for several Oxford businesses. She was a member of Springdale Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and ceramics.
Services will be at noon Saturday in the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home with the Rev. Rich Dilling officiating. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery.
Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Dianne Herrin (Tom) of Jackson; one sister, Helen Starnes of Oxford; two grandchildren, Rebekah Herrin of Fredericksburg, Va., and Thomas Herrin of Des Moines, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John Starnes, and her foster brother, Monroe Starnes.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at the funeral home.

Jim Vaughan
WOODLAND – James William “Jim” Vaughan, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was born Dec. 11, 1931, to Arville Vaughan and Ona Mann Vaughan in Choctaw County. He retired from the Department of Defense after 31 years of service. He returned to Mississippi in 1987. He worked for the Oktibbeha County Co-op for about 20 years. From 1995 to the present, he preached for the Southside Church of Christ. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed gardening.
Services were Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Wilson Adams and Minister Jim Deason officiating. Burial was in Spring Valley Cemetery in Mathiston. Memorial Funeral Home of Houston was in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred “Millie” Norris Vaughan of Houston; one son, Keith Vaughan (Marsha) of Vancleave; one sister, Shirley Threadgill of Ackerman; three grandchildren, Aaron Vaughan and Katelyn Vaughan, and MaKayla Walls and her parents, David and Cindy Walls; and a host of nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Faye Perrigin and Mavis Gertrude Vaughan; one brother, John Calvin Vaughan.
Pallbearers were Randy Martin, David Walls, Whitt Huffman, Chris Threadgill, Jermey Threadgill and Dr. Jack Huffman. Honorary pallbearers were James Norris, Belton Perrigin and Auburn Henderson.

MANTACHIE – Kathy Jean Wilson White, 58, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012. She had resided at the West Point Community Living Center the past four years. She was a homemaker and had worked at the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. She enjoyed animals, arts, crafts and being an inspiration to the other residents.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Bro. Ron Boswell officiating. Burial will be in the Mantachie Cemetery.
Survivors include her father and mother, Clifton and Kathryn Cockrell; one son, Justin Wilson (Jennifer), all of Mantachie; two sisters, Carolyn Boswell (Bro. Ron) of Gainsville, N.C., and Shelia Lockwood (Walt) of Columbus; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be J.B. Berryman, Jimmy Burleson, Jason Yant, Lawrence Stanley, Trent Thompson and Bob Franks.

Rufus Woods Sr.
HAMILTON – Rufus Avery Woods Sr., 81, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen. He was born Oct. 6, 1930, to Rufus Corneleaus Woods and Lackie Madison Woods in Monroe County. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County. He was a retired truck driver for Texaco Oil and a member of Bartahatchie Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a. m. Saturday in the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Dr. Roy McHenry officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Earline Griffin Woods of Hamilton; two daughters, Jenny Butler and Michelle Woods, both of Hamilton; one son, Rufus Woods Jr. (Janet) of Aberdeen; two sisters, Dora Rye and Margie Griggs, both of Hamilton; two brothers, Leon Woods (Ann) and Grafton Woods of Hamilton; six grandchildren, Charles Butler Jr., Nicky Estes, Tony Woods, Jennifer Woods, Brittany Woods and Ashley Woods; seven great-grandchildren, Victoria Butler, Wyatt Butler, Bonnie Butler, Autumn Estes, Karah Estes, Dylan Woods and David Woods.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Pauline Woods; and one brother, George Woods Sr.
Pallbearers will be Tony Woods, Randy Motes, Wyatt Butler, James Whitlock, Larry Leavell and George Woods Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dylan Woods, David Woods, Leon Woods and Grafton Woods.

Mary Ellen Weatherford
MOOREVILLE – Mary Ellen Weatherford, 84, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center of Pontotoc after an extended illness. A Prentiss County native, she was born March 8, 1927, to Wilburn Abner and Catherine Davis Caldwell. She graduated from Baldwyn High School in 1945 and married Roger Hugh Weatherford the same year. She was retired from Comcast Cablevision after over 30 years of service. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, visiting with friends and family on the phone, gardening and working in her flowers. She was a member of Boguefala Baptist Church.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. David Perry officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Homan (B.W. “Bubba”) of Tupelo and Jane Gatlin (Jim) of Oxford; one son, Eddy Weatherford (Linda) of Tupelo; her grandchildren, April Guess (Terry) of Blue Springs, Becky Fisher (Roy) of Nashville, Melanie Russell (Chad) of Olive Branch, Ginger Byrd (Josh) of Brandon, Teresa Reeves (Terry) of Tremont and Wanda Sullivan of Tupelo; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 65 years, Roger Weatherford, who died Jan. 22, 2011; and her brother, Allen Caldwell.
Pallbearers will be Terry Reeves, Chad Russell, Terry Guess, Josh Byrd, Shane Reeves and Blake Nichols.

Hilda Baird
HOUSTON – Hilda Rebecca Thompson Baird, 94, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at Floy Dyer Nursing Home in Houston. She was born Oct. 10, 1917, to Robert L. Thompson and Ellie Coila Wilson Thompson. She was member of the First United Methodist Church in Houston.
Services were Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Houston with the Rev. Larry Patrick officiating. Burial was in Houston Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home of Houston was in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Bobby Baird (Bonnie) and Douglas Baird (Reita), both of Houston; two daughters, Rebecca Webster (Harold) of Houston and Barbara Baird McCluskey of Eupora; a daughter-in-law, Becky Dallas (Gene) of Houston; 12 grand children, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; two brothers, Jack Thompson (Evelyn) of Cedar Bluff and Fred Thompson (Sara) of Houston; two sisters, Ruby Brandon (Joe) of Woodland and Elizabeth Gann of Houston.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Evan Eugene Baird; one son, Jerry Baird; one brother, Robert Thompson.
Pallbearers were Rob Baird, Charles McClellan, Brad Baird, Mark Stewart, Mike Kilgore and Wayne Baird.

Rubye Thompson
NEW ALBANY – Rubye M. Thompson 73, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at Graceland Nursing Home in New Albany. She enjoyed crocheting and working puzzle books. She was a Pentecostal.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn with Bro. Braxton Rutland officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkville Cemetery.
She is survived by one son, Timothy Hall of New Albany; two brothers, Bob Chism of Myrtle and Billy Joe Chism of New Albany; five grandchildren, Deborah White, Amanda Jackson, Brandon Turner, Casey Cleveland and Austin Owens; nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Azley Young Chism; daughter, Diana Hood; brother, Buck Chism; sisters, Edna Malone, Loeda Stepp, Emma Jean Prather, Eula B. Prather and Stella Louise Baker.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today at Waters Funeral Home.
Denise Queen
TUPELO – Denise Ree Queen, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at her residence after an extended illness. She was born Nov. 2, 1939, in Midnight to Henry P. and Elaine Bramlett Allen. She graduated from Louise High School in Louise. She married Robert E. “Bob” Queen on Nov. 14, 1958, and they made their home in the Tupelo where they worked, raised their family and attended church. They were married for 46 years before his death in 2004. Mrs. Queen was known as “The Shipley Queen,” having worked for Shipley Do-nuts for many years until she became ill. She was a devoted wife, loving sister, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of Verona Church of Christ.
A life celebration service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Wayne Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time Friday.
Survivors include her daughters, Brenda Oliver (Billy), Karen Brock and Beverly Wilbanks (Steve), all of Tupelo; her brother, Billy Wayne Allen (Mary) of Reno, Nev.; her sisters, Eva M. Johnson of Tupelo, Annie Nell Cortez (Romie) of Salinas, Calif., Dannie L. Raney (Sam) of Amory and Elaine Kelly (Mike) of Savannah, Ga.; five grandchildren, Kayla Furr (Thomas), Curtis Brock (Laken), Brittany Stafford (Will), Chris Oliver and Drew Wilbanks; great-grandchildren, John Marlin Morgan and Easton Brock; from the heart sister, JoAnn Brock of Verona; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; five brothers, Henry P. Allen Jr., Jefferson V. Allen, James V. Allen, William M. Allen and Roy Lane; and one great-grandchild, Charlie Morgan.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Chris Oliver, Curtis Brock, Drew Wilbanks, Thomas Furr, Will Stafford and David Nelson.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Verona Church of Christ, employees of Shipley Do-nuts and all the doctors who cared for Mrs. Queen.

Ali Al-Haidari
RIPLEY – Ali Munam Daod Al-Haidari, 58, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at his home. He was born March 17, 1953, to Munam Daod Al-Haidari and Afsar Akram Al-Haidari in Baghdad, Iraq. He was the founder and president of the Iraqi National Solidarity movement.
Graveside services were Wednesday, Jan. 4, at New Salem Cemetery in Walnut. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Pearl Sailors Daod of Ripley; one brother, Hassan Al-Haidari; one niece, Dunya Al-Haidari, and one nephew, Munam Al-Haidari, all of Memphis; a special friend who was like a son, Aied Otaibi of Saudi Arabia.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

OXFORD – Kerry Darnell Young, 39, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford.
Services will be at noon Saturday at Tallahatchie Oxford Missionary Baptist Association Building. Burial will be in Beverly Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of the arrangements.
Renee Mitchell
AMORY – Renee Mitchell, 39, died on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center. Born on Sept. 28, 1972, in Yazoo City, she was a daughter of Tommy L. and Bettie E. Ross Foster. She attended Hatley High School. On May 1, 1993, she married Larry Mitchell. Before becoming disabled, she worked as an inspector in the garment and furniture industries. She was a member of Gattman First Baptist Church, where she served has a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and was active in the bus ministry. A loving, amazing, caring and outgoing woman, her life was guided by her faith and her family. She enjoyed gospel music, flower gardening, watching movies with her family, cooking and decorating. She was looking forward to watching her daughter’s high school graduation ceremony in May.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Mitchell of Amory; daughter, Kimberly Mitchell of Amory; her parents, Tommy and Bettie Foster; her grandmother, Ruth Gilmore of Columbia, Tenn.; sister, Tammy Criddle (Jay) of Hatley; brother, Thomas Foster of Columbia, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Cynthia Basham (Dewayne) of Amory; brother-in-law, Joe Mitchell (Janet) of Gattman; nieces and nephews, Alisha, Ashley and Chelse Strawhorn, Emily and Rachel Mitchell, Jake, Natalie and Jayden Criddle, David, Jennifer and Jonathon Basham; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Dakota and Michelle Basham, Dalton and Chloe Allred, Destiny Galloway, and Daniel and Danielle Basham; and a special friend, Julia Welch.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Emmitt Foster, Josephine McDaniel and L. G. Ross; her mother-in-law, Adine Mitchell; and niece, Brandy Maschell Basham.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Harvey Mitchell, Bro. Jackie Pate and Bro. Bobby Price officiating. Burial will follow in Wofford Cemetery of Sulligent, Ala.
Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearer will be Dewayne Basham.

Grace M. McDowell
TIPLERSVILLE – Grace Marie McDowell, 91, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, at her residence in Tiplersville. She was born Nov. 8, 1920, to Howard Harrison and Mary Frances Martin Harrison. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church. She was a master quilter and did beautiful needlework. She was a Sunday School teacher, pianist and a member of the Homemakers Club.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Sammy Barnett and Bro. Ronnie Barefield officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Grace Miller (Henry) of Ripley and Nelda Kitchens (Charles) of Louisville; two sons, Holland McDowell (Ellen) of Tiplersville and Eddie McDowell (Becky) of Selmer, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert McDowell; her parents; and one sister, Elsie Lou Braddock.
Pallbearers will be James King, Charlie McDowell, Keith McDowell, Jeremy Luna, Pat Myers and Joe Cissom.

FULTON – Vivian Uldean Moore, 87, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012. She was born on March 22, 1924, to Richard and Docia Wallace Haire in Fulton. She was a member of the Southern Hills Church of Christ. She worked as a seamstress. She enjoyed studying her Bible, working puzzle books, sewing, singing and spending time with family.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Senter Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Gary Williams and Carl White officiating. Burial will be in Tilden Community Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Mitchell (Ralph) of Fulton; three grandchildren, Michael Mitchell (Teresa), Dena Mitchell and Bo Mitchell (Mekisha), all of Fulton; three great-grandchildren, Anthony Mitchell, Lindsey Mitchell and Calie Mitchell; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Brandi Holland and Morgan Parker.
