Dorris Norris
SALTILLO – Mrs. Dorris Norris, 78, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at the Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born March 31, 1934, to Namon and Minnie Montgomery Bryant. Mrs. Norris was a member of Saltillo United Methodist Church, where for many years she provided beautiful arrangements for the Sunday services.
Mrs. Norris was a crossing guard for a number of years in Tupelo – first at the Battle of Tupelo Civil War Monument on West Main and later at Pierce Street Elementary School. She was a talented seamstress. While her children were growing up, she sewed for the public from her home. She managed McRae’s alterations department for a number of years after her children were grown. Upon retirement she loved working with the flowers and plants in her yard and in the greenhouse her husband built for her.
In 1996 she was diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositis, a rare degenerative muscle disease. She worked tirelessly to educate herself and then others, including her doctors, about this disease.
Services honoring the life of Dorris Bryant Norris will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. Tim Green officiating. Burial will be at Lee Memorial Park in Verona. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors will be in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert “Bobby” Norris of Saltillo; four children, Linda Pearson (Thomas) of the Unity Community, Robert Norris (Tiffany) of Saltillo, Vicki Burch (Ron) of Saltillo and Alan Norris (Lee) of Tupelo; her grandchildren, Clay Pearson (Tracy) of the Unity Community, Chad Pearson (Emily) of Iuka, Nick Norris (Meghan) of Madison, David Norris of Saltillo, Alex Norris of Saltillo, Jonathan Norris of Saltillo, Carrie Burch of Saltillo and Victoria Norris of Tupelo; her three great-grandchildren, Teah, Brandon and Austin Pearson, all of the Unity Community; one sister, Fay Kidd (James) of Tupelo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Moses and Pauline Norris; one sister, Sylvia Bryant; two brothers-in-law, James Gilbert and Wayne Norris; two nephews, Mark Stephen and Thomas Wayne Kidd.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at the funeral home.

Ricky Walker
MORROW, Ga. – Tyrone “Ricky” Walker, 43, died Dec. 31, 2012.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant M.B. Church. The Rev. Alan Atkinson will officiate. Burial will be at Houston Memorial Gardens in Houston. Belle Memorial Funeral Home of Aberdeen is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his parents, Johnny and Maudine Walker of Houston; his fiancée, Vicky Hayes; his daughters, Kareema Sullivan and Kareyah Sullivan; granddaughter, Hailey Harris; sons, Jarrod Jordan (mother, Lora Jordan); and granddaughter, Ariaha Jordan, all of Starkville; Justin Walker (mother, Janet Page) and Yazmen Walker (mother, Jackie White) of Atlanta, Ga.; daughters, Amberica Belim (mother, Mellanee Belim) of Calhoun,City; Ashley Boyd and Somonique Walker; grandson, Jonathan Walker of Jackson (mother, Linda Boyd); one brother, Jonathan (Doris) and Walker of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Kathy (Jural) Hamilton of Houston; five aunts, Shirley (Robert), Katherine (Teddy) Patricia (Freddie), Sally Ann, Viola and Golden Ann (Spergon), David (Mary Ann), Wardell, Richard (Beverly) and James Earl (Earnestine); and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

James Mayo
TUPELO – James Lester Mayo, 68, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012. He was born June 27, 1944, in Orange, Texas. He served his country in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring as a chief petty officer. He eventually retired a second time from the real estate business in 2005. He loved people and left behind many friends and family members.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Boguefala Baptist Church, Hwy. 371 N., Mooreville.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years, Ruth; his son, Chuck (Margie) of Charleston, S.C.; his daughter, Jo Wallace (Shawn) of Fort Worth, Texas; and his grandchildren, Samantha (Daniel), Nathan, Sarah and Michael, all of Charleston, S.C., Bryan of Fort Worth, Texas, and Melissa Johnson (Ned) of Oceanside, Calif.; and one great-grandchild, Cosette, of Oceanside, Calif.

Johnie Doyle Burns
BOONEVILLE – J. D. Burns, 71, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. He was born July 13, 1941, to Ted and Marie Cole Burns. He was a farmer.
Graveside services for the family were at 6 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, at Carter’s Chapel Cemetery in the Altitude community with Bro. Bill Moore officiating. The sons were in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Margie Butler Burns, of Booneville; five sons, Johnny (Rhonda), Tracy (Celeste), Steve (Cindy) and Bryan (Sonia), all of Booneville, and Patrick (Laura) of Magnolia, Texas; two sisters, Nelodene Tidwell of Verona and Blinda (Mike) Dunaway of Booneville; seven grandchildren, Taylor, Connor, Allie, Logan Tate, Ella, Beau and Presley; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his lifelong friend, Dr. Vernon Chase.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Marie.

Latonya Carr

Birtie Edwards
NASHVILLE – Birtie Edwards, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, in Nashville, Tenn.

Charles Kinsey
HATLEY – Charles G. Kinsey, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at his residence. Born Dec. 20, 1931, he was a son of the late Albert Eddie Kinsey Sr. and Fannie Musclewhite Kinsey. He married Betty Mangum Kinsey in 1959. He grew up and attended school in Attala County. He was a member of Hatley Missionary Baptist Church and a Korean War veteran. He was retired from Georgia Gulf. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed spending time with his family, playing music and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty; daughters, Tiawana Kinsey and Melanie Sudduth, both of Amory; brother, J.R. Kinsey (Billie) of Olive Branch; sister, Ruby Oulette of Memphis; grandchildren, Shaun Kinsey, Brittany Ausbon, Glenn Reese, Jessica Reese and Cory Kinsey; great-grandchildren, Katlynn Kirkland and Daniel Reese; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Van Kinsey; four sisters; and two brothers.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Sidney McLeod and Bro. Dean Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Hatley Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Glenn Zwakh, Harry Tomazak Jr., Jody Cagle, Brian Oulette, Allen Williams and James Reese. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Gerald Parker, Carl Lindsey, Wayne Lindsey and John Walden.

Willa Steadman
BOONEVILLE – Willa Dale Steadman, 73, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was born July 4, 1939, to William and Thesle Christian. She was a member of Booneville Church of Christ.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at McMillan Funeral Home in Booneville with Bro. Bobby Christian, Barri Shirley and Dr. Jim Futral officiating. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Garden.
Survivors are one daughter, Tammy (Barri) Shirley of Madison; two sisters, Judy (Jerry) Rowland of Booneville and Mary Evelyn (Dorn) Patton of Tupelo; one brother, Bobby (Sue) Christian of Booneville; three grandchildren, Christian, Callie and Cayden Shirley of Madison; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Steadman, and her parents.
Pallbearers will be Christian Shirley, Kevin Rowland, Jerry Rowland, Bobby Christian, Greg Christian and Tony Christian.

Gerald Rollins
SMITHVILLE – Gerald Daniel Rollins, 74, died on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus. Born July 19, 1938, in Birmingham, Ala., he was the son of the late Carl Daniel and Mary Foshee Rollins. He married Shirley Jean Thompson in 1963; she died in 1999. He was a graduate of Birmingham schools and he enjoyed playing the guitar. He was a ham radio enthusiast and operated station W5KJQ. Before his retirement, he was a station engineer for Mississippi ETV. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maxey Cemetery in Smithville with Bro. James Austin officiating. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Wayla Hunter of Aberdeen; one son, Brian D. Rollins (April) of Smithville; six grandchildren, Melanie Bennett, Kaitlin Armstrong, Courtney Mills, Ashley Raper, Seth Rollins and Summer Rollins; and seven great-grandchildren, Braylon, Wesley, Aliyah, Abby, Landon, Rayleigh and Haley.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Avron Threadgill
STEWART – Avron René Threadgill, 74, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Eupora. He was a retired employee of Tabor Brothers Automotive Supply and P&F Building Supply. He was a member of Union Baptist Church in Webster County, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Winona with the Rev. Terry Wills and Darrell Surrette officiating. Burial will follow in the Reed’s Chapel Cemetery near Stewart. Oliver Funeral Home of Winona is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Threadgill of Stewart; daughters, Vicki Gray of Pontotoc and Sherri Thompson (Kenneth) of Mathiston; stepdaughter, Tammy Worley of Walls; son, Jimmy Threadgill of Stewart; stepson, Chuck Nail of Winona; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Avron Gid and Ada Simmons Threadgill, and his first wife, Mary Catherine Cox Threadgill.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Matthew Gray, Billy Parker, Joey Surrette, Randy Surrette, Andy Nail, Jamie Worley, John Worley and Hunter Threadgill.

HOLLY SPRINGS – Iristine Anderson, 72, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Anderson Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs. Burial will be in Cottrell Memorial Garden. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home of Holly Springs is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Putt
KOSCIUSKO – Betty Herndon Putt, 83, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Attala Nursing Home in Kosciusko. She was a retired sales clerk for Smith & Byars Menswear. She attended Fellowship Baptist Church in Starkville.
She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Phelps (James) of Bartlett, Tenn.; sons, Mike Putt (Linda) of Senatobia, Rodney Putt (Karen) of Kosciusko and Bruce Putt (Wendy) of Flowood; grandchildren, Jimmy, Jason and Jon Phelps, Melissa Flaskamp, Mandy Shipman, Aylon Putt, Lindsay Dickerson, and Taylor, Harrison and Julia Putt; and great-grandchildren, Noah Flaskamp, Jessica, Jordan, Taylor and Jack Phelps, Mary Margaret and Sam Shipman, Cooper Putt, and Brett and Makynlee Dickerson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifton Herndon and Hattie Mae Barnette Herndon; her husband, Louie Aylon Putt; and a sister, Marie Simonds.

RIPLEY – Kayce Elizabeth Rainey Brazil, 34, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, as the results of an automobile accident. She was born Aug. 13, 1978, to Kristi Vaughn and Kenneth Rainey. She was affiliated with Faith Fellowship Church. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, Charles Adam Brazil of Ripley; her mother, Kristie Vaughn of Walnut; her father, Kenneth Rainey (Heather) of Ripley; one brother, Kenneth B. Rainey (Jennifer) of Ripley; grandparents, Tootie Rainey, and Nancy and Roger Cunningham, all of Ripley, and Marvin James Crum of Walnut.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, J.P. Rainey, Blanch Crum and Lucille Dollar.

Sibyl Peden
PONTOTOC – Sibyl Elizabeth Crenshaw Peden, 92, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born on July 2, 1920, to John Payne Crenshaw and Minni Ozell Atkins Crenshaw. She was retired from Delta Trouser and she was a homemaker. She had a special love for children and taught Sunday school and Bible School. She was always eager to help others and loved working in her church and community. She loved her family and working in her flower garden and had a talent for arts and crafts.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with the Rev. Fred Hartley officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her niece, Sue Houpt of Tupelo; one nephew, Tommy Peden of Pontotoc; two great-nieces, Ginger Towrey and Candice Sloan; and one great-nephew, Andy Houpt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Waymon Peden; two sisters, Earline Summiers and Ruth Cates; a brother-in-law, Ferrell Peden; and a sister-in-law, Annie Lou Peden.

SHANNON – Billy Sweat, 54, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was a truck driver and a Baptist. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Waters Funeral Home with Minister Tim Childs officiating. Burial will be in White Zion Cemetery.
Survivors include his daughter, Angie Sweat of Shannon; his son, Jason Sweat of Shannon; brother, Ricky Sweat of Guntown; and six grandchildren, Reagan Johnson, Zack Johnson, Logan Sweat, Abbey Sweat, Landon Sweat and Anna Sweat.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Betty Simmons Sweat, and a brother, Joe Sweat.

Vertie Carter
PONTOTOC – Vertie Mae Carter, 92, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Graceland Care Center in Pontotoc. She was born and raised in Pontotoc. She moved to Memphis where she spent her adult life. She worked in retail sales. She was a member of Berclair Baptist Church in Memphis.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc. The Rev. Tom Rankin and the Rev. Ken Hester will officiate. Burial will follow in the Memphis Memorial Gardens. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Montgomery (Mike) of Pontotoc, Brenda Rankin (Tom) of Trenton, Ill., and Patricia Carter of Pontotoc; six grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, L. Brelian Carter; her parents, Walter and Ludie Hamblin; and a brother, Robert Hamblin.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Greg Barnett, Jeff Barnett, Steve Barnett, Bryan Barnett, Brent Rankin and Dave Brandmeyer.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday.

Juana Myatt
HOUSTON – Juana Joyce Myatt, 74, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at North Mississippi in West Point. She was born Jan. 6, 1939, in Van Vleet to Jack Brock and Ruby Parks Brock. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker with various areas of employment. She worked beside her husband, Auzie, in their construction business and sold real estate for 40 years. She was a loving mother who lived her life for her children and husband.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Home with Randy Rinehart and Donny Davis officiating. Burial will be at Houston Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Auzie Norris Myatt Sr. of Houston; her daughter, Joy Cecile Myatt Baker (Bennie) of Houston; her son, Auzie Norris Myatt Jr. (Edie) of Houston; three grandsons, Auzie Neal Myatt (Keli), Auzie Andrew Myatt and Auzie Norris Myatt III, all of Houston; one great-granddaughter, Kaley Victoria Myatt of Houston; three sisters, Clytee Hester of Houston, Hazel Harmon of Houston and Jackie Hughes (Culley) of Tupelo; and one brother, Danny Brock of Van Vleet.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Ruby Brock; her brother, Billy Brock; and her sister, Norma Nell Brock.

Bonnie Rice
GUNTOWN – Bonnie Roland Rice, 83, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at Graceland Nursing Home in New Albany. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and a former employee of Guntown Slacks. She enjoyed sewing, camping and traveling.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn.
Survivors include one daughter, Billie Jean Stewart (Otis) of Tupelo; one son, Larry Rice (Judy) of West Point; sister-in-law, Mary Alice Messner of Tennessee; brother, James Roland (Maureen) of Iuka; grandchildren, Athena Mathis (Jimmy) and Wesley Rice; and great-grandchildren, Travis Mathis and Calvin Mathis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John T. and Beatrice Roland; her husband, William “Billy” Rice; and a daughter, Sherrye Rice Moore.

Louise Wallis
BALDWYN – Bessie Louise Wallis, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, at her home. She was a retired employee of Blue Bell Manufacturing and a Baptist. She enjoyed her flower garden, watching hummingbirds and her rocking chair.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn with Bro. Terry Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie Stanton (Mike) of Baldwyn; her son, Brad Johnson of Baldwyn; sister, Jessie Niblett of Baldwyn; two brothers, Bobby Roberts and Charlie Roberts (Shelby), all of Baldwyn; two grandchildren, Hope Johnson and Tracy Lee (Daniel); and great-grandchildren, Triton Lee and Tinley Lee.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rubel and Bessie Hall Roberts, and a son, Leonard Johnson.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
