Clinton Hood

KIRKVILLE – Clinton P. Hood, 78, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 20, 1935. He was a lifelong resident of Itawamba County, growing up in the Houston and Kirkville communities. He retired from Super Sagless in Tupelo after 37 years. He was a great husband, father, pawpaw and great-grandpaw whose family was his pride and joy. An avid outdoorsman, he loved fishing, bird hunting and working in the garden with his wife, Doris. As he got older his latest hobby was growing martin gourds and watching his martins in spring of the year. He was a member of the Houston Bird Hunter’s Club and a faithful member of the Ozark Church of Christ.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn with Bro. Carl Dunlap and Bro. Tony Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Kirkville Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Moore Hood of Kirkville; one son, David P. Hood (Cindy) of Kirkville; one daughter, Debbie Massey (Randy) of Mantachie; three grandchildren, Joey P. Hood (Nyla) of Kirkville, Jonathan D. Hood (April) of Kirkville and Cameron Massey of Mantachie; five great-grandchildren, Brady Hood, Abby Hood, Jansen Hood, Jon Luke Hood and Colt Jumper; four brothers, Eulon Hood (Thelma Kay), Gene Hood (Nellie), Joyce Hood (Betty) and Wayne Hood (Betty Ann), all of the Houston community; one sister, Eupil Rayburn (Neal) of Tupelo; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Hettie Hood.

Pallbearers will be Mitchell Hood, Randy Hood, Tim Hood, Greg Hood, Matthew Hood and Larry Bishop.

Honorary pallbearers will be his brothers, Eulon, Joyce, Gene and Wayne Hood; his great-grandsons, Brady, Jansen, Jon Luke and Colt Jumper; a nephew, Gary Barnes; and great friend, Luther Moorman.

Visitation will be from 5 until 9 p.m. today and continue from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at Waters Funeral Home.

RIPLEY – Charles Wayne Miller, 70, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at his residence in Ripley. He was born July 11, 1942, to Jim Gilbert and Etta Irene Ballard Miller. He was a member of Springdale Baptist Church. He was founder and operator of Miller & Sons Garage Doors in Ripley.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Randy Hamilton, Bro. Larry Kirk and Bro. Stacy McKee officiating. Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Louise Miller of Ripley; two daughters, Melanie Clemmer (Burt) of Ripley and Aimee Lancaster (Fred) of Kossuth; two sons, Jeffrey Wayne Miller (Patty) and Charles Jason Miller, both of Ripley; three sisters, Glennie Ruth Short (Leslie) of Somerville, Tenn., Joyce Cook of Little Rock, Ark., and Velva Jane Jarvis of Ripley; two brothers, James Miller (Edna) of Ripley and Danny Miller (Gladys) of Ingomar; four grandchildren, Emily Hutchens (Ryan), Lauren Clemmer, John Riley Miller and Tyler Brock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Larry Miller and Donald Miller.

Pallbearers will be Robert Elliott, Trey South, Ronnie Short, Tommy Benson, Earl Pritchard and Chad Ross. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Lence, Bobby Benson, Hollis Garrison, David McClain, Joe McClain, Billy Hoyt Richardson and the Men’s Sunday School Class of Springdale Baptist Church.

Offie Hickman

SALTILLO – Offie Mae Hickman, 74, died Monday, July 8, 2013, at her daughter’s residence. She was born May 1, 1939, to Belton and Elizabeth Hollis Gray. Going to yard sales, fishing and spending time with her children were the important things in her life. She attended Cedar Grove United Pentecostal Church when able.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at The Saltillo Chapel of WE. Pegues with Bro. Danny Robbins officiating.

Survivors include her husband, James Hickman of Saltillo; two daughters, Judy Ann Hickman and Deborah Gliatta (Anthony), both of Saltillo; one son, Earl Hickman (Alana) of Centerville; two sisters, Dizzine Wright and Eddie Belle Moore, both of Nettleton; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Grady Dewayne Hickman; three sisters, Dessie Fowler, Anna Lee Wright and Almer Kennedy.

CORINTH – Olean Davis Clark, 85, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Health Center.

Dr. James Tolbert Jr.

VERONA – Dr. James Lee Tolbert Jr. died on Monday, June 24, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born March 31, 1941, the son of the late James Lee Tolbert Sr. and Lillian Fields Tolbert.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at N.L. Jones Funeral Directors Chapel. Burial will be in the Porter’s Memorial Cemetery in Tupelo.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sgt. L.C. Jenkins

WATER VALLEY – Sgt. L.C. “Babe” Jenkins, 80, died Sunday, July 7, 2013, in Batesville as the result of an automobile accident. A native of Yalobusha County, he was the son of Charlie and Minnie Jenkins. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he was a staff sergeant. He retired from John Deere in Waterloo, Iowa, with 17 years of service. He loved to hunt, fish and ride his motorcycle. He was the husband of the late Henry Rene Jenkins.

Celebration of Life service will be at noon Saturday, July 13, at the Water Valley City Auditorium. The Rev. Mitchell Steen will officiate. Burial will be in Bayson Chapel Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by two sons, Curtis Jenkins of Waterloo, Iowa, and Nigel Street of Courtland; one brother, Marvin Jenkins of Waterloo, Iowa; and a special cousin who was raised like a brother, Raybon Jenkins of Water Valley.

The body will lie in repose one hour prior to services Saturday at the City Auditorium.

Buddy Peters

TUPELO – James H. “Buddy” Peters, 81, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Countrywood Plantation in Mantachie after an extended illness. A native of Lee County and longtime resident of East Tupelo, he was born in Tupelo on March 14, 1932, to Carroll Lee and Virginia Jamison Peters. A veteran of the United States Army, he served his country during the Korean War. He retired from Tombigbee Electric Power Association with 38 years of service. Traveling, working in his garden and spending time with his family were things he loved the most. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Plantersville.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, July 11, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Danny Balint officiating. Burial will be in Plantersville Cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Hilton Peters (Dana) of Plantersville; two sisters, Beatrice Parker of Nettleton and Lerah Edwards (Lawrence) of Guntown; four brothers, C.D. Peters, Clyde Peters and Mack Peters (Betty), all of Plantersville, and Terry Peters (LaRue) of Tupelo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 45 years, Betty Sue Peters.

Pallbearers will be the deacons of Plantersville First Baptist Church.

Andrew Graham

MEMPHIS – Andrew Louis Graham, 68, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Hospital. He was born Oct. 23, 1944, to Josephine Graham McKnight and George Dewey Graham. He was of the Church of Christ faith.

He is survived by two sons, Andrew “Scott” Graham (fiancée, Melissa) of Iuka and Tracy Lee Graham of Tipton County; one daughter-in-law, Blaire Graham of Booneville; four sisters, Sue Carol Mauney, Nina Giger, Nancy Blaylock and Eudie K. Graham; four brothers, Richard, Dewey and Allen McKnight and Bill Graham.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Graham; his parents; two brothers, George and Charles Graham; and two sisters, Elenor and Ann Graham.

Florine Martin

TUPELO – Florine Priddy Martin, 88, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at The Meadows in Fulton after an extended illness. A Tupelo native, she was born Oct. 23, 1924, to John K. and Myrtle Allen Priddy. She retired after 35 years as bookkeeper for North Mississippi Medical Center and then worked about 13 years at East Heights Baptist Church. She loved crocheting, working crossword puzzles and was an avid sports fan. She was a longtime member, church secretary, Sunday school teacher and director of Children’s Mission of East Heights Baptist Church. She was a member of NMMC Auxiliary and the Shepherd Center. She was much loved by all her family and will be greatly missed.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Tim Brown officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.

Survivors include four sisters, Pauline Norton (Charles) of McMinnville, Tenn., Linda Elaine West of Verona, Martha Sanders of Hernando and Mary Jo Pannell of Tupelo; two sisters-in-law, Diann Priddy and Sylvia Priddy both of Tupelo; three nieces, Pat Bryan (Wes) of McMinnville, Tenn., Debbie Leech (Michael) of Amory and Judy Martin Jones of Tupelo; nine nephews, Mike Norton (Susan) of Nashville, Tenn., Billy Wayne Carr, Steve West, David Priddy (Vicki) of Tupelo, Randy Pannell (Angela) of Starkville, Greg Pannell, Jimmy Priddy (Paula) of Huntsville, Ala., Allen Priddy of Foxworth and Pat Martin (Becky) of Morton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.B. Martin; three brothers, John Allen Priddy, Jimmy Priddy and Buster Priddy; one sister, Geraldine Carr; and one nephew, Bobby Carr.

Pallbearers will be David Priddy, Jim Priddy, Randy Pannell, Steve West, Michael Leech and Zach Leech. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Norton, Pat Martin, Mike Norton, Allen Priddy and Billy Wayne Carr.

Mabel Waller

GUNTOWN – Mabel Mozell Waller 88, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2013. She was born June 15, 1925, in Vernon, Ala., to Raymond and Elvie Guess Rogers. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, aunt and friend. She was a Baptist.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, July 11, at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn. Bro. Ronnie Hatfield will officiate. Burial will be in Haughton Memorial in Amory.

She is survived by her sister, Reba Mortensen of Jacksonsville, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Rogers and Jean Cole; nieces and nephews, Paula Braucht, Darlene House, Lisa Rogers, Keith Rogers, Donna Gish, Van Rogers and Kim Minich; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Waller; brothers, James Ray Rogers and Raymond Rogers; parents, Raymond Redden and Elvie Guess Rogers.

Selvyn Wallace

FULTON – Selvyn Wallace, 67, of the Peaceful Valley community, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born July 16, 1945, to Lemone Edward Wallace and Eva Mae Knight Wallace. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the Army as a combat medic. He worked in the furniture industry for more than 30 years. He was also a nurse for Gilmore Memorial Hospital and for Dr. Murphy in Amory.

Private graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today, July 11, at the Burdine Cemetery. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home of Fulton is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include one sister, Gwyn Bacot (Bill) of Natchez.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Larie Wallace, on Feb. 25, 2011.

John Aven

CALHOUN CITY – John Quincy Aven, 91, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at his home. He was born Feb. 3, 1922, in Big Creek to John Q. Aven Sr. and Alice Litten Aven. He was a retired U.S. Postal mail carrier. He was a retired sergeant and a veteran of World War II in the Army 79 Infinity. He was a member of Calhoun City First Baptist Church and a life member of the American Legion. He was a member of MS X POW, D.A.V., Masons and the Joy Group of First Baptist Church. He worked with the Republican Party. He loved horses and bird dogs.

Survivors include his wife, Syble Parker Aven of Calhoun City; a son, David (Kathy) Aven of Fayetteville, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Billy Jean (James) Webb of Oxford; two stepsons, Buddy Dye and Marion Long, both of Calhoun City; a sister, Lillian Young of Columbus; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City with full military honors. The Rev. Jimmy Vance and the Rev. Mike Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the Calhoun City Cemetery.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Mattie Frances Rea Stewart, 83, died on Thursday, July 4, 2013, in Roseville, Calif. Born Dec. 29, 1929, in Amory, she was a daughter of the late Jefferson Davis and Mattie Augusta Rea. In 1949, she relocated to California, settling in the Sacramento area. With a kind, generous and loving heart, she made many good friends and set a great Christian example by seeing the best in all, being greatly missed by all who knew her. She enjoyed her pets, Teddy and Simone.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at the E.E. Pickle Funeral Home Chapel in Amory with Bro. Tommy Whaley officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Bernard and Jack Stewart; one daughter, Debbie Stewart Myers; sisters, Clara Mae Dykes, Christeen Carpenter and Ruth Farrar; granddaughter, Holli Larsen; great-grandchildren, Dakota and Billy Larsen.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ruble Rea Sr. and Armon David Rea; and one sister, Dora Lee Conwill.

BECKER – Larry Wayne “Bud” Bishop, 57, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at his residence in Becker. He was born Feb. 25, 1956, to Horace Junior Bishop and Eunice Kelly Bishop in Aberdeen. He was a lifelong resident of Monroe County and a graduate of Aberdeen High School. He retired from Tronox in Hamilton. He was a member of Meadowood Baptist Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 12, in the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with Bro. Lloyd Sweatt officiating. Burial will be in Greenbriar Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Leigh Ann Bishop of Becker; one daughter, Lacey Bishop Watson (Joel) of Dora, Ala.; two sons, Kenneth Pate Bishop and William Stephens Bishop, both of Becker; one grandchild, Thomas Watson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Kenneth Bishop and Eugene Bishop.

Fred Logan

BRUCE – Fred Wayne Logan, 77, died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. He was born Dec. 22, 1935, in Bruce. He was a retired truck driver for Petroleum Gas, a cattle farmer and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He enjoyed his Kawasaki mule, caring for his bees and chickens, and visiting with his friends at Joe’s market. He loved his pet Yorkie, Little Men. He was a Baptist.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce. Bro. Paul Morris will officiate, and Bro. James West will assist. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery at Bruce. Parker Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Sue Patterson Logan of Bruce; four sons, Donald Wayne “Donny” (Vickie) Logan of Water Valley, Rodney David (Suzette) Logan of Bruce, Mark Richard Logan of Bruce and Jeffery Gregg (Teresa) Logan of Ridgeland; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel Craton Logan and Jewel Lavell Lee Logan.
