William Felix Calhoun, Jr., M.D.
Aug. 6, 1925 – July 4, 2013

NATCHEZ – Services for William Felix Calhoun Jr., M.D., 87, of Natchez, who died Thursday, July 4, 2013, at St. Dominic’s Hospital in Jackson, Miss., will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Sam Tomlinson officiating.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time at the church.
Dr. Calhoun was born Aug. 6, 1925, at LaVacca Plantation in Catahoula Parish, La., the son of William Felix Calhoun and Zaidee Boatner Calhoun.
From 1942 to 1944, he was a pre-medical student at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He attended LSU Medical School from 1944 until 1948. In 1951 he completed his internship and pediatric medicine residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, La.
He moved to Natchez in 1951 to practice pediatric medicine with the Natchez Medical Group. In June 1953, he was drafted by the United States Army Medical Corps with the rank of Captain. He served as Chief of Pediatrics at William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas.
He returned to Natchez in 1955 to practice pediatric medicine until his retirement in June 1992. Devoted to the health and welfare of children, for the rest of his life he remained keenly interested in pediatric care, reading widely on the subject.
Dr. Calhoun was also interested in historic preservation, gardening, farming, travel, classical music and education.
In 1975, he restored Elgin Plantation, the family home that is annually opened on the Natchez Spring Pilgrimage. For years, he was an avid gardener there, successfully recapturing the historic horticulture. He was also deeply interested in farming properties in east central Louisiana.
For years, Dr. Calhoun traveled to numerous foreign countries, often taking his family with him. When the Natchez Festival of Music began in Natchez in 1991, he was an early supporter, particularly enjoying his favorite opera, “Faust.”
Interested in education at all levels, he was a longtime supporter of Trinity Episcopal School in Natchez.
Dr. Calhoun was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, William Baker Calhoun; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Kennedy.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Ruth Ellen Green Calhoun of Natchez, and three children, Ruth Hughes and husband, Dick, of Mountain Top, Penn.; William “Bo” Calhoun, M.D., and wife, Jennifer, of Tupelo, Miss.; and Ellen Collett, M.D., and husband, Rountree, of Morganton, N.C.; nine grandchildren, Callie, Ellen and Richard Hughes; Anna, Boatner and Hudson Calhoun; and James, John and Ruth Ellen Collett; a sister, Zaidee Hurst of Jackson, Tenn.; and three sisters-in-law, Ethel Banta of Natchez and Dorothy Green and Helen Green, both of Jackson, Miss.

CORINTH – James Edward Davis, 70, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Hospital.
Services will be 1 p.m. today, July 6, at Hopewell M.B. Church in Rienzi. Burial will be in Andy Dilworth Cemetery. Patterson Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charlie Howard Sr.
BYHALIA – Charlie Douglas Howard Sr., 60, died Monday, July 1, 2013, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mich.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at Mg. Pisgah CME Church in Cayce, Miss. Burial will be in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum & Son Funeral Home of Holly Springs is in charge of arrangements.
The remains will lie in repose from noon until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. The remains will lie in state from 1 to 1:55 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Mattie Jones
MYRTLE – Mattie Jean Jones, 70, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at her home. She was born Feb. 15, 1943, to Todd Massey and Willie Mae Wade Massey in Holly Springs.
Services will be 2 p.m. today, July 6, at Reid’s Gift Church in Potts Camp with the Rev. Jerry Lee Williams officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Brenda (Tony) Ingram of Myrtle and Mary Louise Jones of Milwaukee, Wis.; three sisters, Birdie Harris, Everlaney Holden, and Betty Simmons, all of Hickory Flat; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank Jones; five brothers, Eugene, Pete, James, Willie Lee, and Rafe Massey; and a sister, Bobbie Jones.
Pallbearers will be Willie Flemon, Lorenzo Wilson, David Holland, Robricass Isom, Vandellan Vance and William Carter.
Thomas Scott
PONTOTOC – Thomas J. Scott died Thursday, July 4, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House. He was born in Union County on May 15, 1931, to Robert and Bessie Scott. He retired out of the Air Force after serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He also retired from Lane Furniture after 20 years of service. He was a charter member, Sunday school teacher, and a devoted follower of Christ at New Faith Baptist Church.
There will be a private family memorial.
He is survived by one daughter, Dara Smith (Tommie) of Longview Community; three sons, Mike Scott (Virginia) of Thaxton, Robert Scott (Kathyrn) of Toxish Community; and Don Scott (Lynn) of Pontotoc; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Lewis Scott of Oxford; and two daughters, Jenny Darnell Scott and Linda Gail Scott.

OXFORD – Indiana Price, 93, homemaker, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Graceland Care Center. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Hodges-Freeman Funeral Home in Oxford.
Mary Stricklin
CALHOUN CITY – Mary Alice Stricklin, 79, of Calhoun City, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at her home. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Joy M.B. Church where she served as church secretary and chairman of the annual homecoming. She also loved fishing and gardening.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7 at Porter’s Chapel A.M.E. Church in Calhoun City. Burial will be in the Mt. Joy M.B. Church Cemetery. Belle Memorial Funeral Home of Bruce is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by six daughters, Lovie Westmoreland of Bruce, Martha Ree Coffey of Calhoun City, Alice F. Edwards and Annie V. Edwards, both of Grenada, Patricia Crooks of S.C. and Juanita Gunn of Texas.

HOLLY SPRINGS – Biddie L. Pannell, 74, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Oxford Baptist Hospital.

Harril Wilkerson
WALNUT – Harril Glen Wilkerson, 75, died Thursday, July 4, 2013, at his home. He was born Oct. 9, 1937, to Joe Sr. and Martha Pearson Wilkerson in Atoka, Okla. He was a paint contractor and a minister. He was a member of Faith Covenant Church.
Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at McBride Funeral Home Chapel with Sis. Kathy Davis and Bro. Gerald Short officiating. Burial will be in Shiloh Cemetery in Ripley. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Pat Gates Wilkerson of Walnut; two daughters, Shelia Kelly of Walnut and Patricia “Trish” Wilkerson (Mike Fuentes) of Fresno, Calif.; two sons, Mitch Wikerson (Lisa) and Burt Wilkerson Sr. (Scottie), both of Ripley; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Sandra Wilkerson; one son-in-law, Don Kelly; three sisters, Nancy White, Francis Quinn, and Irene Boston; and three brothers, Kenneth Wilkerson, Joseph “J.B.” Wilkerson, and Joe Wilkerson Jr.
Pallbearers will be Cameron Wilkerson, Blake Wilkerson, Burt Wilkerson Jr., Bennett Wilkerson, Jimmy Kelly and Robert Goodson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Baker, Tommy Crum, Johnny White, Kevin White and Chris Bullock.

PONTOTOC – Michael Alton Williams, 43, died Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at his home in Carlsbad, N.M. He was born July 7, 1969, to Darrell Williams and Evelyn Pinching in Carlsbad, N.M.

He is survived by his mother, Evelyn Pinching Ford (Joe) of Pontotoc; his father, Darrell Williams of Arizona; a dear loving friend, Dottie Chadwick of Carlsbad, N.M.; one brother, Darrell (D.J.)Williams of Pontotoc; one uncle, Richard Michael Pinching III (Deborah); three cousins, John Russell Pinching Jr. and Tiffany Davis, both of Carlsbad, N.M. and John Russell Pinching of Las Cruces, N.M.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard Jr. and Elizabeth Agatha Pinching; and one uncle, Arthur Lewis Pinching.

HOUSTON – Mary Ruth Walls Higginbotham, 85, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Trace Regional Hospital in Houston. She was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Vardaman to Albert Franklin Walls and Minitia Ethel Burgess Walls. She was a homemaker and a farmer. She was a member of Thorn Church of God.
Services will be 4 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at Houston Funeral Home in Houston with Bro. Arnold Amason and Bro. Frank Samples officiating. Burial will follow in Ellzey Cemetery in Vardaman. Houston Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty and Bobby Holder of Houston; her sons, Danny Higginbotham of Houston and Jimmy and Linda Higginbotham of Houston; her sister, Tarlene Thompson of Amory; her sister-in-law, Zelda Walls of Houlka; her grandchildren, Alisha Holder, Chris and Alisha Higginbotham, Brad Higginbotham, Jennifer and Josh Chandler and Cory Higginbotham; and her great-grandchildren, Carlie Higginbotham, Taylor Higginbotham, Brodie Chandler, Mary Ella Chandler, James William Higginbotham and Griffin Higginbotham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Henry Higginbotham on Dec. 8, 1996; her parents; and her brothers, Arlis Walls and L.H. “Gus” Walls.
Pallbearers are Shawn Carter, Dennis Washington, Danny Suggs, Brad Higginbotham, Chris Higginbotham and Cory Higginbotham.

TUPELO – Jo Glisson, 77, died July 5, 2013, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis after a six-month illness.
Services will be at noon Monday, July 8, at The Church of the Crossroads in Corinth. Burial will be at the Forrest Memorial Park in Corinth. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Nichols
BALDWYN – Bobby Gene Nichols, 75, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. He was born March 5, 1938, to L.B. and Anneda Barrett Nichols. He was a retired self employed auto body repairman. He was a member of Parker’s Chapel Baptist Church. He enjoyed trading.
Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. William Copeland and Bro. Fred Hartley officiating. Burial will be in Kirkville Cemetery. Waters Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Linda Box Nichols of Baldwyn; his daughters, Shelia Potts (Griz) of Baldwyn and Tina Kelton (Chuck) of Booneville; brother, Ricky Nichols (Wanda) of Booneville; sister, Ann Lindley of Booneville; grandchildren, Stormie, Skye, and Hayden Kelton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Tittle; and brother, Danny Nichols.
