Jimmy ‘Squirrel’ Sanderson

AMORY – Jimmy “Squirrel” Sanderson, 74, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at his residence. He was born in Amory to the late Grover Clevel Sanderson and Laverne Rye Sanderson on November 9, 1938. Squirrel was a 1957 graduate of Hatley High School and was of the Baptist faith. He owned and operated Sanderson Motors for 35 years, working at Larry Clark Chevrolet as a salesman until his retirement. Previously, he worked at Fred Tinsley Pure Oil Station, Moore Stevens Shell Station, Richardson Chevrolet, Big 4 Motors in Tupelo, Sanderson Redi Mix, Gulf Finance, Fine Cars, Red Hogland Chevrolet, and Sam Stevens Motors. A great salesman, he possessed the gifts of kindness, integrity, and honesty. Loving life and living it to the fullest, he made many friends throughout the years and enjoyed being with his buddies over a meal or playing cards or just simply visiting. Known as the family comedian, Squirrel enjoyed entertaining them over a good meal. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and just about anything that had a steering wheel and an engine.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 26 years, Nita Sanderson; daughters, Patsy Jones of Amory and Bonnie Finney (Gary) of Wren; sons, Jeff Sanderson (Jackie Young) of Memphis, Jay Sanderson (Anita) of Nashville, and Jon Sanderson (Cindy) of Hoover, Ala.; sisters, Lois Hughey of Nesbit, Elsie Sanderson of Amory, Glenda Daughety of Baton Rouge; brother, Jerry Sanderson (Grace) of Amory; grandchildren, Kristi Sanderson (Jason Tipton), Audrey Sanderson, Bryan Sanderson, Peyton Sanderson, Cayce Jones (Mallory Wright), Emilea Tackett (Levi), Cortnee Jones, Candy McGregor (Shane), Elyse Smith (Benjamin), Kathryn Henry (James); great-granddaughter, Lucie Caroline Tackett; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by twin sons; grandparents; and several aunts and uncles.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. today at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Robert Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Haughton Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Doug and Steve Fowlkes, Hob Sanderson III, Thomas Wayne Sanderson, Lee Hughey, Patrick and Nathan Daughety, and Charles Sisson.

Honorary pallbearers will be his card playing friends and the staff of Larry Clark Chevrolet.

Betty Wilbanks

ASHLAND – Betty Nell Brown Wilbanks, 75, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Medical Center in Ripley. She was born Nov. 25, 1937, to Claude and Alta Kimery Brown in Benton County. She was a homemaker and a member of Hamilton Baptist Church.

Services will be 11 a.m. today at Hamilton Baptist Church in Walnut with Bro. Bill Autry and Bro. John Huggins officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery in Walnut. McBride Funeral Home of Ripley is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband, William Earl Wilbanks of Ashland; three sons, Scott Wilbanks (Christy) of Falkner, Paul Wilbanks of Walnut, and Phillip Wilbanks (Misty) of Falkner; one daughter, Teresa Davis of Ashland; one brother, Wallace Brown (Doris) of Conway, Ark.; one sister, Evelyn Smith of Russville, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren, Cara, Vivian and Kyle Wilbanks, Magen and Taylor Wilbanks, Adam and Matthew Davis, and Shelby, Adrienne and Claudea Wilbanks.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Sgt. Jason Jester

EAST BEND, N.C. – Sgt. Jason Grant Jester, 37, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013. He was born Dec. 27, 1975, in Forsyth County to Michael Regan Jester and Patricia Spencer Jester. Jason was an active member of the North Carolina National Guard. He served three tours; the first was in 2003 with the Marines in Iraq. The second was with the Army National Guard in Iraq, and the third tour was also with the N.C. National Guard in Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Chapel with the Rev. Kenny Gooden officiating. Burial, with full military honors by the N.C. National Guard, will be in Union Grove Baptist Cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his beloved girlfriend, Sara Wooten; grandfather, Garl Jester; aunts and uncles, Darlene and Jerry Lineberry, Carolyn and Donnie Branch; and close friends, Mike and Peggy Davis.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joe and Elaine Spencer and Grace Jester.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Wayne Smith, 63, died Saturday, May 26, 2013, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Louis, Mo. He was born June 3, 1949, in Lee County to Edgar Lee Smith and Mary Smith. He was a graduate of Siggers High School, Class of 1967.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Patterson Smith of Shannon; his uncle and caregiver, Bobby Ray Patterson of Chesterfields, Mo.; two daughters, Alice Smith of Plantersville and Shonda McGlun of Tupelo; two sons, Kelsey Smith of Pontotoc and Rodrick Smith of Shannon; four sisters, Joyce (Jimmie) Jones, Belinda (Winferd) Shumpert, Constin Smith, and Sonya (David) Fields, all of Shannon; four brothers, Alvin Smith of Shannon, Kelvin (Lenton) Smith of Tupelo, Terry (Ruby) Smith of Shannon, and Bernard (Angela) Smith of Amory; and six grandchildren.

IUKA – Mae Watkins, 72, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth.

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Sarah Estmer Coleman, 90, formerly of the Buckhorn community, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at her home in Russellville, Ark.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home in Pontotoc. Burial will be in Collums Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Bonnie Scott (Jessie) and Stormy Barnett (Walyn); 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Frances Williams, Kathleen Moore, Livinia Purdon, Nona Mullin, Dorothy Cox, Linda Hayles, Glenda Moore, and Marilyn Holiday; brothers, Ernie, Rayburn, Jimmy, and Larry Swanson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nylan Coleman; sons, Billy, Dub, and Mike Coleman; an infant son; daughter, Sandy Williams; four brothers, Marlin, Curtis, L.V., and Richard Swanson; three sisters, Vera McKnight, Faye James, and Norma Laura; and her parents, Early and Ludie Swanson.

Pallbearers will be Mark Scott, Jay Roberts, Jacob Williams, Joseph Freeman, James White, and Cody White. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Martin Wimbs Sr.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Martin Lee Wimbs Sr., 86, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Beacon Place. He was born in Fulton, Miss., in Itawamba County on Feb. 28, 1927. He was the son of the late Martin Luther and Berniece Lee Wimbs. After high school, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marines and received an honorable discharge from the U.S Coast Guard. He retired from Blue Bell Inc. and VF International after 40 years of domestic and international manufacturing and engineering services, working and traveling in more than 54 countries. After retirement, he joined the International Executive Service Corps and did consulting projects in Peru, Egypt (2), Morocco, India, Turkmenistan, Chile, Argentina, Thailand, and The Slovak Republic. He was a 55-year Life Member of Masonic Lodge No. 185, Abingdon, Ill., a 55-year 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason of the Peoria, Ill. Consistory, former member of the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, former Explorer Scout leader, a 48 year member of The First Baptist Church of Greensboro, N.C., former Sunday school teacher, and a member of the Barnabas Sunday School Class. He was an avid fly fisherman, private pilot, seaman and sailor.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at Forbis and Dick Funeral Service Chapel, 1118 N. Elm St., Greensboro, N.C. A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Greensboro, N.C. Inurnment of the cremated remains will be in the church columbarium. Forbis and Dick Funeral Service of Greensboro, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nelle Dozier Wimbs; his children, Martin Lee Wimbs Jr. and wife, Shearin, Don Wimbs, Shauna Gamble and husband, Mike of Surf City, N.C., and Pam Wimbs; grandchildren, Marcus Wimbs, Michael Wimbs, of North Kansas City, Mo., Kimberly Pruitt and husband, Charles, Erika Forrester and husband, Joshua, and Robert Hunter of Surf City, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Dylan Pruitt, Bailey Pruitt, Jackson Forrester and Cooper Forrester.

Nettie Ware

PONTOTOC – Nettie Ware, 75, died Friday, May 31, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born Jan. 14, 1938, in Pontotoc to J.T. and Dovie Catherine Burrage. She graduated from Houston High School and Draughon’s Business College. She was a faithful member of Harrisburg Baptist Church, where she taught the five-year-old Sunday school class for many years. She retired from Hancock’s Fabrics after 34 years of service. She enjoyed reading and flowers. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Lee Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. David Smith officiating. Burial will be in Lee Memorial Park. Lee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathi Carter (George) of Tupelo and Liz Rayburn (Al) of Pontotoc; two sisters, Bettye Wright (Joe) of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and Cindy Cofield (Ken) of Tupelo; two grandchildren, Josh Rayburn (Mandi) and Hannah Rayburn; three great-grandchildren, Kaden Rayburn, Marlee Rayburn and Braxton Henson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, T.K. Ware.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Rayburn, Michael Rogers, Judson Jernigan, Joseph Jernigan, John Ware and Benjamin Tucker.

Honorary pallbearers will be James Rogers, Richard Ware Jr., Timothy Tucker and Matthew Tucker.

Joye Hester

AMORY – Joye V. Sugg Hester, 87, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born on Jan. 1, 1926, on the Sugg farm in Monroe County, she was a daughter of John David and Ettie Jane Parham Sugg.

Joye graduated from Amory High School in 1945. After graduating from Teletype School in Birmingham, she was employed by Western Union in New York, N.Y., and later by American Airlines at LaGuardia Airport in communications. Joye worked many years in the medical field in insurance and as a medical transcriptionist. She was employed by NMMC in Radiology and in Amory by Murfee Clinic, P&S Clinic, Dr. B.O. Moore and Dr. Eddie Yoe. Joye was a member of Amory Church of Christ. Loving her church family, she worked with the Women’s Prayer Ministry and the Visitation Program. Joye enjoyed the outdoors, reading, sports, going to the Wellness Center and flying to California and Florida to visit family.

She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia H. Barnes (Bill) of Fort Myers, Fla., and Laurie H. Kunsman (Gary) of San Jose, Calif.; son, Danny Hester (Cindy) of Amory; grandchildren, Chandler Odom, Len Odom, and Anna Hester; great-grandchildren, Christian Dunne and John Carter Coker; special nieces, Joyce Gray and Emily S. Morris; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Ethel Gray, Ruth Westbrook, Josephine Davis, Johnie West, Carolyn Sugg, and Mary Nell Sugg; brother, Halden Sugg; and special niece, Judy Sullivan.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Amory Church of Christ with Mr. Philip Hathcock and Mr. Derek Maranto officiating. Burial will follow in New Hope Cemetery. E.E. Pickle Funeral Home of Amory is in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Larry, David, Randle, and Randy Gray; Andy Hood; and Jimmy Sullivan.

Hubert Brasel

BOONEVILLE – Hubert Brasel, 75, of Booneville, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice in Tupelo. He was born July 11, 1937, to John Howard and Lily Crawley Brasel. He was retired from H&W Pipe, a member of East Prentiss Baptist Church, and a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Korea.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at East Prentiss Baptist Church with Dr. Kenneth Bishop officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in East Prentiss Cemetery. McMillan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carolyn Aldridge Brasel; two sons, Benny (Felicia) Brasel of Iuka and Michael (Alesia) Brasel of Booneville; one sister, Dorothy Kitson of Waxhaw, N.C.; two brothers, Billy (Daisy) Brasel of Wheeler and Stanley (Bonnie) Brasel of Millington, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Nichole (Drew) Williams, Emily Brasel, Hunter Brasel, and Ethan Brasel.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jewel Chittom and Gladys Chittom; and four brothers, Kirk, Travis, Newt, and Harold Brasel.

PLANTERSVILLE – Ray L. Strength, 74, U.S. Army, retired, died unexpectedly at Lake Willemena near Plantersville on Thursday, May 30, 2013.

A life celebration will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Chaplain Dr. Goldsborough officiating. A full military salute will be presented at the graveside immediately following in Lee Memorial Park.

FULTON – Ethel M. Umfress Gray, 87, died Thursday, May 30, 2013, at her home. She was born June 24, 1925, to Errett "Sam" and Mattie Jane Tucker Umfress in Tremont.

She was a member of the Tilden Church of Christ. She enjoyed fishing, being active in church, working with her flowers, and helping others in need.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Senter Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Jeff Bates officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery. Senter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
