Cora Pennington
ABERDEEN – Cora Murff Pennington, 93, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Pioneer Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was born Oct. 4, 1915, to Elbert Lee Funderburk and Elizabeth Lizzie Duncan Funderburk in Franklin County, Ala. She lived most of her life in Monroe County, where she retired as a seamstress at Seminole Manufacturing. She was a member of New Prospect Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Tisdale-Lann Memorial Chapel in Aberdeen with the Rev. Jack Inmon officiating. Burial will be in New Prospect Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, Woodie Murff Jr. (Minnie Lou) and Bobby Gene Murff (Elanie), both of Aberdeen; one sister, Earnestine Wheat of New Mexico; two grandchildren, Tim Murff and Kimberly Dodds. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Woodie Wilford Murff Sr.; and one grandchild, Vickie Stanford.
Pallbearers will be the deacons of New Prospect Baptist Church.

BOONEVILLE – Annie Pounds died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by McMillan Funeral Home.

WATER VALLEY – Ginny Sue Williamson Brooks, 59, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at her home near Water Valley.
No public service will be held. Coleman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Orlas Farris
NEW ALBANY – Orlas Edward Farris, 87, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County. He was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Corinth to Hubert Lee and Ethel Seargent Farris. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired bookkeeper for Federal Compress and Warehouse Company, and the former owner/operator of The Handy Mart Grocery in New Albany.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery in Sheffield, Ala. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Shelia Bates of New Albany and Sandra Heater of Binning, Calif.; four sons, Ray Farris (Leslie) of New Albany, Rick Farris (Cindy) of Pontotoc, Bob Farris (Shelia) of Ripley and James Richard Farris of Memphis; one brother, Gary Dixon (Gail) of Corinth; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Jimmie Nell Bates
MANTACHIE – Jimmie Nell Bates, 69, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Traceway Retirement Community. She was born June 2, 1940, in Mantachie to Oye L. Bates and Celesta Williams Bates. She was a member of the Harrisburg Baptist Church in Tupelo. She was an honor graduate of Mantachie High School and attended Northeast Junior College in Booneville. She received special medical training in Denver, Colo. She was a former employee of Savings Oil Co. and also worked in the medical profession for Dr. Thomas McDonald and Dr. Lawrence Brisco for many years before retiring from Bamp&B Concrete in February 2008 after 19 years of service.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Mantachie with Dr. Forrest Sheffield officiating. Burial will be in the Keyes Cemetery.
Survivors include special cousins, Ruby Clayton, Syble Clayton, Sandra Newton, Mark and Madge Clayton, and N.T. Clayton; several relatives from the Bates and Williams families; and very special family friends, Preston Knight and family, Charles Provine and family, and Jerry and Mary Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Marjorie Sue Bates.
Pallbearers will be employees of Bamp&B Concrete.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Pete Flanagin
PONTOTOC – Johnny E. “Pete” Flanagin, 77, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Community Hospice in Verona. He was a Baptist minister for 54 years. He also worked as a painter. He loved the Lord and preaching the word of God, and he enjoyed fishing.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Tutor Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc with Bro. Ray Crawford officiating. Burial will be in Sand Springs Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Flanagin; two daughters, Glynda Bly and Shelia Rosser; two sons, Mark Flanagin and Mackie Flanagin; two sisters, Betty Williams and Linda Long; one brother, James Flanagin; and nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ruby Flanagin, and his father, Leonard Flanagin; a sister, Mary Lou Busby; and a brother, Boyd Flanagin.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.
Ben Powell Jr.
TISHOMINGO – Ben Ellis Powell Jr., 76, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Carter Branch M.B. Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Patterson Memorial Chapel of Corinth is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the church.
Van Scallon
OXFORD – Van Delaine “Slim” Scallon, 63, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at his home. He was born May 10, 1946, in Calhoun County. He was a retired employee of the University of Mississippi Book Store. He was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Poplar Springs Cemetery at Vardaman with the Rev. Orin Black officiating. Parker Memorial Funeral Home of Bruce is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Gardner Scallon of Oxford; two sisters, Pat Washington of Houlka and Shirley Tubbs of Bradford, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dixie Scallon and Ethel Scallon.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Roy Durbin
OLIVE BRANCH – Roy Durbin, 57, died Monday, June 15, 2009. He was born Aug. 26, 1951, in Memphis to W.E. and Ruth Rikard Durbin. He was a Baptist and a truck driver.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holly Springs Funeral Home with Bro. David Parlow officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery at Olive Branch.
Survivors include his mother, Ruth Durbin of Olive Branch; three sisters, Marilyn Johnson of Holly Springs, Susan Hanna of Slayden and Janet Miles of Olive Branch; and one daughter, Serena McDaniel of Memphis.
Pallbearers will be Roy Booth, Steve Hubert, Tommy Campbell, Richard Tyler, Rick Parham and Gene Holmes.

PONTOTOC – Verdie Lee Keith, 84, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at Graceland Care Center in Pontotoc.

James Holland
PALMETTO – James Earnest Holland died Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Community Hospice at Darlington Oaks in Verona. He was born July 11, 1953, to George and Mary Ruth Miller Holland in Lee County.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Blackland M.B. Church in Verona with Pastor Earlie Eddie Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. N.L. Jones amp& Son Funeral Directors of Tupelo is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Felicia Holland; four daughters, Tounya Gill of Shannon, and Santanna and Montanna Holland and Chanisha Sims, all of Tupelo; one stepdaughter, Alexandrea Metcalf; two sons, Charles Hodges (Paola) of Atlanta, Ga., and Matthew Freeman of Greensboro, N.C.; three step sons, Janoris C. Traylor, Steven L. Metcalf and Alexander Metcalf; two grandsons, Torrence and Lorenzo Gill; one stepgrandson, Kelan Traylor; three sisters, Helen Dillard of Los Angeles, Calif., and Pearl Pound and Georgia Ann Parks of Tupelo; two brothers, John Henry Holland (Marguerite) of Shannon and Ozzie Holland (Vinell) of Verona; a host of niece, nephews, uncles and aunts.

CEDAR BLUFF – Retha Mann Roush, 84, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at her home in Cedar Bluff.

ACKERMAN – O.B. Hood, 94, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, in the Winston County Medical Center in Louisville.

Loree McCord
BOONEVILLE – Pearl Loree Michael McCord, 88, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Dogwood Plantation Assisted Living Center in Corinth. She was born Sept. 7, 1920, in Prentiss County to Jerry and Pearl Eaton Michael. She was a machine operator in the clothing manufacturing industry, retiring from Wrangler (formerly Blue Bell) in 1982. She was a member of West Booneville Church of Christ. She enjoyed working in her garden and her flowers.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Booneville Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Ward Hogland officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
Survivors include a son, Jimmy McCord (Sheila) of Booneville; two daughters, Carolyn Walker (Joe) of Booneville and Mae Brown; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bradford McCord, on July 20, 1988; a daughter, Gwen Loveless; a son, Harry Geno; an infant son; her parents; a great-granddaughter; three brothers; and four sisters.
Maudeen Webb
DETROIT, Ala. – Maudeen Hanson Webb, 89, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at the Golden Living Nursing Home in Winfield, Ala.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Otts Funeral Home Chapel in Sulligent, Ala. Burial will be in the Pleasant Site Cemetery in Detroit, Ala.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Catherine Murphree
HOULKA – Catherine Murphree died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at her home. She was born Jan. 7, 1937, in Midlothian, Ill.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Southern Funeral Chapel in Houston with Bro. John Flippin officiating. Burial will be in Rocky Mount Cemetery in Calhoun County.
Survivors include her husband, Sid Murphree; two daughters, Kelly Alberson (Joe) of Olive Branch and Susan Conn (Jessie) of New Mexico; one son, David Murphree of Bloomington, Ind.; two brothers, Eddie Carten of Indiana and Charles Younger of Tupelo; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Mildred Carten, and two sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
