Carolyn Austin

AMORY – Carolyn Marie Logan Austin, 67, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Amory. Born Aug. 12, 1945, in Sumner, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Logan Sr. and Corrine Russell Logan. Growing up in Tutwiler, she attended nursing school in Bryan, Texas, and worked as an RN in the Marks and Clarksdale area for many years. Strong in her faith and loving the Lord, she was a devout Catholic, and loved the congregation of St. Helen’s Catholic Church. Always having a positive attitude, her children always knew that they were the light of her life. She enjoyed gospel music, drinking coffee and reading, and doing extensive research on the famed Kennedy family.

She is survived by her daughters, Carol Jo Thomas (Jerry) of Tupelo, Mary Louise Chamoun of Southaven and Drayanna Maxcy of Amory; son, Eddie Sanders (Debbie) of Amory; sister, Margie Adams (John) of Oakland; brother, Thomas Logan Sr. (Myrtis) of Oakland; grandchildren, Michelle, James and Steven Thomas, Mary Lynn Maxcy, Andy and Kayla Prestridge; great-granddaughter, Emily DeVaughn; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sons, Billy Perry and Jimmy Sanders, and a niece, Renee Logan.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at St. Helens Catholic Church with the Rev. Antony Chakkalakkal officiating. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery at Sumner.

Pallbearers will be James Allen Thomas, Steven Thomas, Andy Prestridge, Michael Barnett, Trea Logan and Jerry Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Guy Mitchell, Michael Cox and the staffs of Golden Living Center and Legacy Hospice.

FULTON – Rebecca B. Bullock Strickland, 72, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, in Fulton. She was born Sept. 8, 1940, to George Henry Bullock and Thelma Upton Bullock. She enjoyed spending time with her family and quilting.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at Senter Funeral Home in Fulton with Mike Deaton officiating. Burial will be in Fulton City Cemetery. Senter Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by her husband, Johnny Strickland of Fulton; sons, Buddy Strickland of Fairview, and Dewayne Strickland and Robert Strickland, both of Fulton; daughter, Teresa (Billy) Johnson of Mantachie; grandsons, Doug (Elizabeth) Strickland of Fulton and William (Stephanie) Johnson of Rienzi; granddaughter, Ashley Johnson of Mantachie; great-grandson, Jonathon Strickland of Fairview; great-granddaughters, Maci Strickland and Ella Grace Strickland, both of Fulton; brothers, John Bullock and Bob (Judy) Bullock, both of Tremont, and Jim (Linda) Bullock of Benton, Mich.; sisters, Josie (James) Steele of Fulton and Brenda (Roy) Barnett of Tupelo; and a special friend and caregiver, Tammy Strickland.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Henry Bullock; her mother, Thelma Bullock; a son, Bryan Strickland; two grandsons, Phillip Strickland and Christopher Strickland; a brother, Bill Bullock; and a sister, Mary Wooten.

Pallbearers will be John Johnson, Doug Strickland, Raymond Bowling and David Witcher. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of Courtyards Community Living Center.

Jimmy Dickey

MOOREVILLE – Jimmy Eugene Dickey, 71, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at the North Mississippi Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born July 17, 1941, to Jimmie Elton and Jewel Bross Dickey. He was disabled, but he didn’t let it slow him down. He enjoyed mowing his yard and being outdoors. A master carpenter and a loving father, he treasured the time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Bro. Wayne Thorn and the Rev. Bobby Holland officiating. Burial will be in Union Grove Cemetery Church of God of Prophecy.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Virginia Dickey of Mooreville; two sons, Doug Dickey (Paula) of Tupelo and Terry Dickey (Nita) of Guntown; three daughters, Cheryl Dickinson of Fulton, Kim Curtis (Mike) of Liberty and Regina Duffie of Baldwyn; three sisters, Faye Bean (Edwin) of Mobile, Ala., Jerry Wood of Saltillo and Evelyn Turner (Jackie) of South Carolina; three brothers, Larry Dickey (Carol) of Fulton, Ronnie Dickey of Alabama and Ralph Dickey (Goldie) of Saltillo; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn Rushing; a sister, Doris Stewart; and his parents.

Pallbearers will be John Clayton, Larry Hood, Greg and Tracy Fondren, Junior Hood and Doug Dickey Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be James Lackey and Ronnie Dickey.

Charles Stembridge

BEECH SPRINGS – Charles “Sedge” Stembridge, 72, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at Sanctuary Hospice House from an extended illness. He was born Nov. 15, 1940, to Mitchell and Crentell Matthews Stembridge. He was a graduate of Tupelo High School and a member of Beech Springs Free Will Baptist Church. He worked at Superior Products and retired from Rutledge Contractors in 2010. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loved riding around with his best friend, Ruby Monaghan, and eating at Ryan’s. He especially enjoyed time he spent with his children and grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Sammy Lansdell officiating. Burial will be in Beech Springs Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughters, Michelle Bailey of Saltillo and Amanda Baker of Pontotoc; his stepdaughter, Leigh Smith of Smithville; four grandchildren, Brandi Adams of Byhalia, Michael Bradley of Maryland, Thomas Baker and Chasity Phillips, both of Pontotoc; stepgranddaughter, Meagan Smith of Smithville; nieces, Charlotte Kilgore (Chris) of the Carolina community and Nancy Johnson of Tupelo; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and his special friend, Ruby Monaghan of Mooreville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Crentell Simmons; his father, Mitchell Stembridge; and his wife, Rebecca Faye Welch Stembridge.

Pallbearers will be Neil Monaghan, Sonny Oxner, Andrew Bailey, Jeff Ramey, Christopher Ramey and Tim McCollum. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill and Gill Monaghan.

Jauris Alford

TUPELO – Jauris Wyndle Alford, 76, formerly of Derma, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center Hospice Unit in Tupelo. He was born March 4, 1937, in Chickasaw County to Eurbane Alford and Clara Gore Alford. He was a retired self-employed upholster and a member of New Hope Church of God in Thorn.

He is survived by one daughter, Reba (Paul) Ward of Big Creek; one son, Mike (Sonia) Alford of Tupelo; one stepdaughter, Becky Murphree; two stepsons, Bobby Chrestman and Jeffrey Tedder; a special friend, Alice Cobb; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, June 22, at New Hope Church of God in Thorn. Bro. Gregg Moss will officiate. Burial will be in Elzey Cemetery at Vardaman. Pryor Fuenral Home of Calhoun City is in charge of the arrangements.

LAMAR – Linda Frances Sharp, 71, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at her home. She was born April 24, 1942, in Louisville. She was a Baptist. She was self employed at Sharps Grocery and G&L Shavings.

She is survived by three daughters, Anita Sharp Muncy of Lamar, Lorrie Sharp Vowell of McCool and Sheila Sharp Ferrara of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Sharp, and her parents, Charles Rolan McCandless and Christine Robertson McCandless.

ABERDEEN – Jimmy Lee Rice, 83, died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at Community Hospice in Verona. He was born on May 17, 1930, to Gracie Wood Wright and Arthur Wright in Aberdeen.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nida Lee Rice; 10 daughters, Dora Hampton, Wilma (Arlindo) Lopes, Margie Carter, Juanita (Robert) Jackson and Nicole Carter, all of Boston, Mass., Melinda Stone of Rockford, Ill., Rosie Heard of Tupelo, Christine (Claude) Devauld, of Aberdeen, Emma (Cleveland) Oneal and Joyce (Dale) Gilleylen, all of Columbus; 13 sons, Willie Carter, Charlie Lee Carter, Henry Carter, Elton Carter, Jimmy E. Frank Brand Jr.

HOUSTON – Rufus “Frank” Brand Jr., 90, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson. He was born June 4, 1923, in Houston to Rufus F. Brand Sr. and Ama Jamison Brand. He was an Army veteran, serving in the Armored Engineer Battalion. He was a supervisor at ATF and a member of Victoria Heights Baptist Church in Byhalia.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at Houston Cemetery with Bro. Randy Rinehart officiating. Burial will follow. Memorial Funeral Home of Houston is in charge of the arrangements.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Bray Brand of Houston; one son, Thomas Stuart Brand of Hattiesburg; one daughter-in-law, Colene Brand of Vicksburg; two grandchildren, Gary Brand and Mitchell Brand of Vicksburg; and five great-grandchildren, Dillon, Dalton, Destiny, Robert and Hannah Brand.

Freddie Paul Ashmore

BALDWYN – Freddie Paul Ashmore, 63, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at his home. He retired from FMC Corp. He was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of Ingram Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jennie Lane Greer Ashmore of Baldwyn; two sons, Nick Ashmore (Heather) and Nathan Ashmore (Allie), all of Baldwyn; a grandson, Brody Greer Ashmore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Jr. and Virginia Bearden Ashmore, and an infant brother, James Edward Ashmore.

Pallbearers will be the deacons of Ingram Baptist Church and James Newby, George Heavener and Cliff Foster.

Whitney Hoover

TUPELO – Whitney Vinton McCall Hoover, 66, died unexpectedly on Friday, June 21, 2013, at North Mississippi Medical Center.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors. Holland Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Ann Davis

TUPELO – Margaret Ann Davis, 47, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was born in Monroe, La., on July 6, 1965, to Robert William McGowen Sr. and Peggy Ann Harrelson McGowen. She was a graduate of UNA with a degree in nursing and worked as a labor and delivery nurse for over 15 years. She was currently working on her master of education degree at the University of Mississippi. She was an active member of Bissell Baptist Church. She loved her grandchildren and cherished the time she spent with them.

A celebration of her life will be 5 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at Bissell Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger Smith officiating. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include her daughters, Kimberly Shook (fiancé, Aaron Burgess) of Maben and Andria Tate (Douglas) of Tupelo; four grandchildren, Kouper Shook, and Ashtyn, Kynadee and Taytum Tate; one sister, Amanda Driskill; one brother, Robert McGowen Jr.; two aunts, Susan Stanford of Saltillo and Dody Vail of Tupelo; her father, Robert McGowen Sr. of Tyler, Texas; her mother and stepfather, Peggy and Wayne Dring of Arcadia, La.

BRUCE – Carlton Allen Collins, 52, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at his home. He was born Aug. 19, 1960, in Bruce. He was a former employee of Whirlpool Inc. in Oxford. He was also an EMT with Calhoun Ambulance Service. He was a member of Parker Baptist Church.

He is survived by his parents, Allen Brooks Collins and Edna Earl Ingram Collins of Bruce; a sister, Judy Bartholomew of Fayette, Ala.; two nieces, Brooke Moore (Drew) of Northport, Ala., and Lacie Bartholomew of Fayette, Ala.; a great-niece, Andi Moore of Northport, Ala.; and his wife, Judy Baeur Collins of Bruce.

BRUCE – Cloise Mitchell Austin, 92, died Friday, June 21, 2013, at Calhoun Health Services in Calhoun City. She was born May 24, 1921, in Calhoun County. She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church.
