MYRTLE – James William Grose, 82, died Saturday, March 24, 2012, at his home near Myrtle. He was born Oct. 11, 1929, in Taylor to Robert Frank and Annie Louise Grose. He was a loving, caring man who loved the Lord and his family. He was a retired farmer and a member of Old Liberty Pentecostal Church. He had worked for Ertel Manufacturing.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Glenfield Funeral Home of New Albany with Bro. Daniel Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Philadelphia Baptist Cemetery in Lafayette County. Glenfield Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Opal E. Grose of Myrtle; one son, James Royce Grose (Joan) of New Albany; four daughters, Mary Young (Naaman), Virginia Ann Hulsey (Wayne) and Martha Kay Stanford (Willie), all of Myrtle, and Janie Ruth Hillhouse (Danny) of Pontotoc; six brothers, Robert, Jerry, Bennie, Dee and Larry Grose, all of Oxford, and Sonny Grose of Blue Mountain; three sisters, Pearl Carr of Bristol, Tenn., Sue Mahan of Pontotoc and Dorothy Harwell of Oxford; four stepchildren; 31 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; and his caregiver, Samuel Bishop.
Pallbearers will be D.J. Blackard, Jonathon Grose, Shannon Young, Everett Carruth, Ryan Carruth and Tucker Dees.

ABERDEEN – Bobby Len Bowen, 40, died Thursday, March 22, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

NETTLETON – Landal Quay McLaughlin, 45, died suddenly Saturday, March 24, 2012, at his residence. He was born in Pontotoc County on July 22, 1966, to Quay McLaughlin and Sherry Graham McLaughlin Warren. He attended North Pontotoc High School. Before becoming disabled, he worked for many years as a truck driver and upholsterer in the furniture industry. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and camping. He attended New Vision Worship Center in Nettleton.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Nettleton Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Jessie Strider officiating. Burial will follow in the Seymore Family Cemetery on the Seymore farm southwest of Nettleton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from noon to service time Wednesday.
He is survived by his wife, Tami Seymore McLaughlin; his mother, Sherry Warren of Oxford; stepfather, O’Neil Warren (Bobbie) of Thaxton; three sons, Landal Douglas “Doug” McLaughlin of Becker, Scott McLaughlin of Oxford and Blake Holley of Nettleton; three daughters, Cassi Lewis (Butch) of Oxford, Emily Bramlett (Denny) of Oxford and Courtney Morton (Daniel) of Nettleton; sisters, Layne McLaughlin of Oxford and Lorye Logan of Hurricane; seven grandchildren, John Allen, Page and Allison Lewis, Payton and Paisley Bramlett, Ashton and Kaylee Morton; sister-in-law, Danielle Long of Nettleton; father-in-law and mother-in-law, John Allen “Pete” Seymore Sr. and Martha Seymore.
He was preceded in death by his father; one brother, Lowell McLaughlin; and his grandparents, Douglas and Loraine Graham, and Issac and Clara McLaughlin.

WEST POINT – Patricia B. “Patti” Johnson, 58, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born March 1, 1954, in Gulfport to Doris and William H. Burril. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Alan Johnson of West Point ,whom she married Sept. 21, 1972; son, Steven Johnson (Annie) of Brandon; daughter, Danah Johnson Harpole (Stephen) of Brandon; three sisters, Judy B. Allen, of Brookhaven, Suzi B. Smith of Natchez and Bobbie B. Carpenter of Brandon; four grandchildren, William Alen Harpole, Stephen Jacob Harpole, Anna Cecile Johnson and Ava Lynn Johnson.

FULTON – Dessie M. Abbott, 84, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Sanctuary Hospice House after an extended illness. She was born Feb. 4, 1928, in Hamilton, Ala., to William Victor and Dessie Jane Clingons Griffus. She was active in many churches. She devoted her time to ministering to people,and lived her daily life with a strong Christian faith. She enjoyed watching Fox News and eating at Kwik Sak.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton. Burial will be in the Shottsville Cemetery.
Survivors include three sons, Gary Abbott (Sharon) of Tamarac, Fla., Danny Abbott Sr. of Fairview and Jacky Abbott (Debbie) of Fulton; one brother, Wesley Griffus of Vina,Ala.; one sister, Vicky Duncan of Bellville, Mich.; five grandchildren, Angela Abbott of Ireland, Danny Abbott Jr. of Tupelo, Derek Abbott (Brandi) of Mooreville, Ronnie Abbott ( Kristin) of Fulton and Lee Abbott (Ashley) of Fort Rucker, Ala.; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a special family member, Mary Savage; a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Abbott, who died in 2002; three sisters, Jane Graham, Delona Griffus and Myrtle Duncan; three brothers, Brice Griffus, Marlon Griffus and Victor Hazel Griffus; and her parents.

HICKORY FLAT – Freddie Wayne Davis died Sunday, March 25, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union County in New Albany. He was born June 13, 1935, to Eph Davis and Eula Timmons Davis in Booneville. He was married to the late Gussie Davis. They had three children were born. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Hickory Flat.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Baptist Church with Bro. Jimmy Wilbank and Bro. Daniel Brookman officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Cemetery in Booneville. N.L. Jones Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Kathryn Sherfey
SHANNON – Mary Kathryn Gardner Sherfey, 95, died Monday, March 26, 2012, at her residence. She was born Feb. 3, 1917, in the Springhill community of Saltillo to Exer and Maude Gardner. At an early age, she moved with her family to Shannon. After graduation from Shannon High School on May 7, 1935, she attended Draughon’s Business College. She married Glen A. Sherfey Sr. on Jan. 4, 1948, and they moved to West Texas where she was a housewife and worked part-time for a doctor’s answering service and for a milk company doing product promotions. She and her family moved back to Mississippi in the early 1960′s and she worked for Tombigbee Electric Power Association until her retirement on Dec. 29, 1995, at the age of 78. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Shannon, where she sang in the choir and taught children’s Sunday School. She was also a member of Shannon Women’s Club. She was a caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother with an outgoing personality and a beautiful smile.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with the Rev. Roger Smith and the Rev. John Box officiating. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Al Sherfey (Linda) of Shannon; granddaughter, Alana Fowler (Adam) of Nettleton; great-grandchildren, Aidan and Arin Fowler; her brother, Bunch Gardner (Martha); sisters-in-law, Frances Gardner, Alice Judon, Rhudy Fancher (Robert), Ruby Nell Sherfey; brother-in-law, Jake Sherfey (Ocille); several nieces and nephews; caregivers, Linda Thompson, Patricia Murphy and Carol Patterson.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Glenn A. Sherfey Sr., on Aug. 27, 2009; her parents; and her brother, J.W. “Jim” Gardner.

MEMPHIS – Ronald A. “Ron” Caldwell, 55, on Monday, March 26, 2012, went to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a lengthy battle with diabetes, its complications and liver disease.
Caldwell was the son of Joyce Polk Caldwell and the late James W. Caldwell, and the brother of David M. Caldwell (Tina). He also leaves a precious niece, Sarah Caldwell.
Caldwell, a Memphis native and graduate of Memphis University School, earned a bachelor of science in journalism and advertising and master of arts in journalism degrees from the University of Mississippi.
He worked as director of public information for the American Cancer Society in Memphis and media relations director at Ole Miss as well as account executive at Thompson and Company Advertising. He was also a marketing director at WZEZ in Nashville before beginning a lengthy career in community journalism in editor roles at the Shelby Sun Times, Germantown News, Collierville Herald and DeSoto Times Tribune.
Caldwell, a member of Bellevue Baptist Church, also wrote a freelance sports column for more than 30 newspapers in the Mid-South while also stringing for the Associated Press and numerous regional and national publications. He won numerous awards from AP, Mississippi Press Association, Public Relation Society of America and the Mississippi College PR Society.
There will be a graveside service and burial at Old Monroe Cemetery in Algoma on Wednesday, March 28, at 1 p.m. Bro. Darrell Clarke will officiate. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born Sept. 24, 1920, in Tippah County to William Washington and Ethel Kincaide Mask. He was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator, and worked in maintenance for the Mississippi State Department of Transportation and Tippah County. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of Turners Chapel Baptist Church.

PONTOTOC – Steven Lee Buckles, 53, died Sunday, March 25, 2012, in Pontotoc. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He worked as a police officer at Amarillo National Airport in Amarillo, Texas, and most recently worked for Security Plus in Ecru. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather.

He was a member of Shady Grove M.B. Church. He was a former employee of Trace Industries. He enjoyed his family and riding.
